A plant location in the Alaska Railroad belt seems desirable in view of the advantages of rail transportation and the accessibility of the principal interior markets.

A cement manufacturing operation would require essentially four types of raw materials: 1) calcareous material, 2) argillaceous material, 3) fuel and 4) gypsum.

The relatively favorable location of limestones near Windy station on the Alaska Railroad has led to the investigation of the potential raw materials which would be available to that region.

Three limestone deposits of commercial size occur in the Devonian rocks of the Alaska Range in the Windy Creek area. Two appear to be of suitable chemical character. They are located approximately 7 and 11 miles west of the Railroad respectively.

Twenty-four deposits of various types of argillaceous materials in the Healy River and Windy Creek areas have been sampled and analyzed chemically.

Sufficient and presumably suitable fuel for a potential cement operation appears to be available from the coal mines in the Healy River area.

Gypsum occurs at Sheep Mountain, 120 miles southeast of the Windy Creek area. Potentially sufficient tonnages are available to meet the requirements of a cement plant, but little has been done to develop the deposits.

The raw materials now available probably would be suitable for type I cement, although the alkali limit probably would be exceeded if no means of beneficiation were employed.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr5174","usgsCitation":"Moxham, R.M., West, W., and Nelson, A.E., 1951, Cement raw materials available to the Windy Creek area, Alaska: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 51-74, Report: 38 p.; 7 Plates: 14.84 x 17.71 inches or smaller, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr5174.","productDescription":"Report: 38 p.; 7 Plates: 14.84 x 17.71 inches or smaller","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":428843,"rank":9,"type":{"id":29,"text":"Figure"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1951/0074/figure-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":428842,"rank":8,"type":{"id":29,"text":"Figure"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1951/0074/figure-10.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":428841,"rank":7,"type":{"id":29,"text":"Figure"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1951/0074/figure-11.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":428840,"rank":6,"type":{"id":29,"text":"Figure"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1951/0074/figure-12.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":428839,"rank":5,"type":{"id":29,"text":"Figure"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1951/0074/figure-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":428838,"rank":4,"type":{"id":29,"text":"Figure"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1951/0074/figure-4.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":428837,"rank":3,"type":{"id":29,"text":"Figure"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1951/0074/figure-5.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":428836,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1951/0074/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":148082,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1951/0074/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Alaska","otherGeospatial":"Windy Creek area","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -150.35825989343203,\n 64.93184292407176\n ],\n [\n -150.35825989343203,\n 60.70726719449698\n ],\n [\n -146.51397922706997,\n 60.70726719449698\n ],\n [\n -146.51397922706997,\n 64.93184292407176\n ],\n [\n -150.35825989343203,\n 64.93184292407176\n ]\n ]\n ],\n \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n }\n }\n ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49e5e4b07f02db5e6f95","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Moxham, Robert M.","contributorId":56210,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Moxham","given":"Robert","email":"","middleInitial":"M.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":170560,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"West, W.S.","contributorId":30609,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"West","given":"W.S.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":170559,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Nelson, A. These areas are probably only local manifestations of mineralization that affected a much broader area and formed antimony-bearing deposits in neighboring districts, the closest of which is 50 miles away. The ores were exposed largely as a result of lode gold mining, but at two periods in the past, high prices for antimony ore warranted an independent production and about 2500 tons of stibnite ore was shipped.\r\n\r\nThe sulfide deposits occupy the same fractures along which a gold-quartz mineralization of greater economic importance occurred; and both are probably genetically related to igneous rocks which intrude the schistose country rock. The sulfide is in part contemporaneous with some late-stage quartz in which it occurs as disseminated crystals; and in part the latest filling in the mineralized zones where it forms kidney-shaped masses of essentially solid sulfide. One extremely long mass must have contained nearly 100 tons of ore, but the average of the larger kidneys is closer to several tons. Much of the ore is stibnite, with quartz as a minor impurity, and assays show the tenor to vary from 40 to 65 percent antimony. Sulphantimonites are less abundant but likewise occur as disseminated crystals and as kidney-shaped bodies. Antimony oxides appear on the weathered surface and along fractures within the sulfide ore.\r\n\r\nDeposits containing either stibnite or sulphantimonite are known at more than 50 localities, but only eighteen have produced ore and the bulk of this came from the mines. The geology of the deposit, and the nature, extent, and period of the workings are covered in the detailed descriptions of individual occurrences.\r\n\r\nSeveral geologic and economic factors, which greatly affect prospecting and mining for stibnite ore in the area, are outlined. The principal available ore and reserves are considered to be ores earlier mined but never shipped, ore minable from near-surface deposits, and ores recoverable as a by-product of future gold mining. The outlook for stibnite production in the district is very uncertain. Apparently the greater portion of stibnite ore has already been recovered and present operations will strip the two principal areas of the district. This conclusion is based on the scanty discoveries since the last war and the fact that the areas are so pock-marked with prospects that there is little likelihood that any other large near-surface bodies remain to be discovered. Future prospecting would essentially be limited to attempts to seek the continuation of lodes previously having high yields of stibnite.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey],","doi":"10.3133/ofr5146","usgsCitation":"Killeen, P.L., and Mertie, J.B., 1951, Antimony ore in the Fairbanks district, Alaska: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 51-46, 43 p.; 3 maps (2 folded) ;27 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr5146.","productDescription":"43 p.; 3 maps (2 folded) ;27 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":149030,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1951/0046/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":43139,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1951/0046/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":43140,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1951/0046/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":43141,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1951/0046/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ac7e4b07f02db67aea4","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Killeen, Pemberton Lewis","contributorId":108090,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Killeen","given":"Pemberton","email":"","middleInitial":"Lewis","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":169493,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Mertie, John B. Detailed geologic mapping and stratigraphic studies were supplemented by core drilling. The core drilling tested the thickness and physical character of the individual coal beds and aided in determining the continuity of the beds. It is hoped that the information on coal resources thus obtained will provide basic data useful in the development and utilization of the coal, which furnished one of the natural bases for the potential industrial growth of this region. Exploratory drilling for oil and gas has been thus far unsuccessful and suggests that geological conditions in the area mapped are not favorable for the accumulation of petroleum; the geologic information obtained during this investigation may, however, be helpful in delimiting areas in other parts of western Washington that may be favorable for exploratory drilling.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/coal8","usgsCitation":"Snavely, P.D., Roberts, A.E., Hoover, L., and Pease, M.H., 1951, Geology of the eastern part of the Centralia - Chehalis coal district, Lewis and Thurston Counties, Washington (See also Bulletin 1053): U.S. Geological Survey Coal Map 8, 2 Plates: 54.17 x 39.44 inches and 54.65 x 40.12 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/coal8.","productDescription":"2 Plates: 54.17 x 39.44 inches and 54.65 x 40.12 inches","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":359849,"rank":3,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/coal/008/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":398702,"rank":4,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_19561.htm"},{"id":359848,"rank":2,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/coal/008/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":188356,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/coal/008/report-thumb.jpg"}],"scale":"31680","country":"United States","state":"Washington","county":"Lewis County, Thurston County","otherGeospatial":"Centralia-Chehalis coal district","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -122.882,\n              46.646\n            ],\n            [\n              -122.647,\n              46.646\n            ],\n            [\n              -122.647,\n              46.896\n            ],\n            [\n              -122.882,\n              46.896\n            ],\n            [\n              -122.882,\n              46.646\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","edition":"See also Bulletin 1053","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b1be4b07f02db6a91fc","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Snavely, Parke Detweiler Jr.","contributorId":48535,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Snavely","given":"Parke","suffix":"Jr.","email":"","middleInitial":"Detweiler","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":279931,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Roberts, A. A 1,400-square-mile abnormally radioactive province in southwestern Maine was outlined.
\n
\n
The outcrop data obtained from car traversing are evaluated statistically. Cumulative frequency distribution curves are drawn to show the distribution of outcrops at various levels of radioactivity, and straight-line extensions are made to show to maximum probable grade for various rock types and areas in Maine. A maximum grade of 0.055 percent equivalent uranium is thus predicted for the entire state. A belt about 16 miles wide and 60 miles long (approximately 800 square miles) was mapped in considerable detail (see index map, pl. 1). The mapped area is in the west-central part of the Arctic Foothills province, wholly within the boundaries of Naval Petroleum Reserve No. 4. Major drainage consists of the middle reaches of the Etivluk, Ipnavik, Kuna and Kiligwa Rivers.

Principal objectives of the party, using previous geologic studies in the Okpikruak-Kiruktagiak Rivers area as an initial working base, were stratigraphic and structural studies of the outcrops in the interstream areas. In view of the former interest in possible Lisburne limestone plays, the Lisburne Ridge west of the Etivluk River and the northward nosing of the Triassic complex between the Ipnavik and Kuna Rivers were designated as areas for particular emphasis.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr54306","usgsCitation":"Tailleur, I.L., and Kent, B.H., 1951, Stratigraphy and structure of the Southern Foothills section between the Etivluk and Kiligwa Rivers, Alaska, 1951: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 54-306, Report: 28 p.; 6 Plates: 50.79 x 21.39 inches or smaller, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr54306.","productDescription":"Report: 28 p.; 6 Plates: 50.79 x 21.39 inches or smaller","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":418196,"rank":8,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1954/0306/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":418195,"rank":7,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1954/0306/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":418194,"rank":6,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1954/0306/plate-3.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":418193,"rank":5,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1954/0306/plate-4.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":174321,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1954/0306/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":418192,"rank":4,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1954/0306/plate-5.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":418191,"rank":3,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1954/0306/plate-6.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":418190,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1954/0306/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Alaska","otherGeospatial":"Southern Foothills","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -168.2417243825593,\n              70.4352335612015\n            ],\n            [\n              -168.2417243825593,\n              66.42417794363908\n            ],\n            [\n              -140.83708671900976,\n              66.42417794363908\n            ],\n            [\n              -140.83708671900976,\n              70.4352335612015\n            ],\n            [\n              -168.2417243825593,\n              70.4352335612015\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b1ae4b07f02db6a8293","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Tailleur, Irvin L.","contributorId":105304,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Tailleur","given":"Irvin","email":"","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":244278,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Kent, Bion H.","contributorId":63389,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Kent","given":"Bion","email":"","middleInitial":"H.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":244277,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Predominant chemical characteristics of these waters are a high percentage of silica, moderate hardness, and a low percentage of sodium. The composition of the Loup River water is influenced by the geologic formations through which ground water, a major contributor to the flows of the Loup River branches, has percolated. \r\n\r\nInvestigation of water quality at or near proposed dam sites in the Loup River basin indicates that if soil and drainage conditions are favorable, the impounded water would be satisfactory for irrigation use.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"[U.S. Geological Survey],","doi":"10.3133/cir107","usgsCitation":"Connor, J.G., 1951, Progress report, chemical quality of the surface waters in the Loup River basin, Nebraska: U.S. Geological Survey Circular 107, i, 15 p. :ill., map, diagrs.
