The map shows the distribution of landslide and other surficial deposits by presenting the writer's best judgement regarding the origins of the various parts of the present landscape. It is based completely on the interpretation of aerial photographs through a stereoscope, which permits a three-dimentional relief model of the ground surface to be seen, enables the geologist to study and interpret the origins of landforms with considerable ease. In fact, photointerpretation provides many advantages over both ground observations and laboratory studies of surficial materials in the mapping of surficial deposits, particularily for reconnaissance-type studies. Of course, better information can be provided when all aspects of the studyy are integrated. These preliminary photointerpretation maps are the inital stage of a continuing, more detailed study of surficial deposits in the Bay region, but they will hopefully provide map users with immediately useful information about the regional distribution of landslide and other surficial deposits.

\nThe central Wisconsin River basin is the middle part of the entire Wisconsin River basin. The basin is about 5,050 square miles in area, and extends about 110 miles south from Merrill to Wisconsin Dells. The basin includes all or parts of the following counties: Adams, Clark, Columbia, Jackson, Juneau, Langlade, Lincoln, Marathon, Marquette, Monroe, Portage, Sauk, Taylor, Waushara, and Wood.
\nPURPOSE AND SCOPE
\nThis study provides a background of hydrologic knowledge suitable for use by water-resource planners and managers, and it provides a framework for more detailed water-resource studies in the future. Specifically, the purposes of this report are to: (1) Describe the geologic and hydrologic environments of the central Wisconsin River basin. (2) Describe the water resources of the central Wisconsin River basin including their sources, uses, quality, interrelationships, availability, and behavior within the basin environment. Much of the information in this report has been generalized to allow presentation in the atlas format. Liberal use was made of available data from many sources and interpretations from published reports. Additional material was collected and analyzed to allow a balanced presentation on water resources and the physical environment. This study is part of an investigation of the water resources of the major river basins in Wisconsin. The completed basin studies and those being studied are shown on the cover envelope. The information in this report should be adequate for the broad aspects of planning water-resource development and management. However, individual problems and water needs will require more specific information than is given in this report.

In a recent article in \"Science\" discussing the Environmental Policy Act of 1969, Gillette (1971) states \"The law's instructions for preparing an impact report apparently are not specific enough to insure that an agency will fully, or even usefully, examine the environmental effects of the projects it plans.\" This report contains a procedure that may assist in developing uniform environmental impact statements. The Department of the Interior and the Council on Environmental Quality will appreciate comments on the procedure here proposed.
\nThe heart of the system is a matrix which is general enough to be used as a reference checklist or a reminder of the full range of actions and impacts on the environment that may relate to proposed actions. The marked matrix also serves as an abstract of the text of the environmental assessment to enable the many reviewers of impact reports to determine quickly what are considered to be the significant impacts and their relative importance as evaluated by the originator of the impact report.
\nMany exhaustive studies of the use of matrices for environmental studies are now being undertaken. (See Sorensen, 1971.) This comparatively simple system is intended as a guide for the many people who are faced with the evaluation and preparation of environmental impact reports before the results of these studies have been completed. It should be borne in mind that there is presently no uniformity in approach or agreement upon objectives in an impact analysis and this generalized matrix is a step in that direction.
\nThe procedure does not limit the development of detail in any specific aspect of the environment; a separate expanded matrix for any environmental aspect can easily be developed within the framework provided.
