Valleys near Gallup, N. Mex., similar to many in the Southwest, were filled in Recent time with alluvium. This material is now being eroded by systems of gullies, and the walls of these gullies provide exposures by which the history of the deposition of the alluvium can be traced.
Alluvial fills near Gallup have been eroded at least twice previously within Recent time. The middle fill of the three that are recognizable contains potsherds of Pueblo II age, indicating that deposition was occurring as late as A. D. 1200.
The chronology of alluviation and degradation for valleys in the Gallup area appears to agree with that for other valleys in the Southwest which have been studied.

These floods were characterized by an extremely late spring breakup of ice, by great flood peaks resulting from snow melt, and by two separate floods in the James River Valley in less than a month.
\nThe primary cause of the floods was the rapid melting of the season's great accumulation of snow, one of the deepest on record. In the period between the normal spring breakup time and the actual breakup of river ice, considerably more snow accumulated. Some of this was melted by a few warm days and the melt was stored as water behind snow barriers in upland watercourses. A sudden increase in temperature beginning April 13 and lasting until most of the snow had been converted into runoff resulted in rapid rise of flood waters.
\nTributary flood waters made the Missouri River from Mobridge to Yankton, S. Dak., rise to near the maximum recorded discharge. At Sioux City, Iowa, the 1950 flood peak-discharge exceeded any previously recorded by the Geological Survey.
\nThe center of the flooded area west of the Missouri River lay in the Cannonball River Basin which had the greatest water content of snow on the ground just before the ice broke up Floods north and south of this area were relatively less intense. Scattered records of the Cannonball River and a study of newspaper accounts and other information show that the flood of 1950 was greatest since the area was settled. Flooding of the James River at Jamestown was the greatest since 1897, and the floods of April and May 1950 were of nearly the same stage.
\nItemized flood damages were made by Federal and State agencies, and relief was sent to the area by the Department of the Army and the American National Red Cross.
\nData include records of stage and discharge at 54 gaging stations for the period of flood, a summary of peak discharges and comparative data for past and present maxima, a table of crest stages, and weather associated with the 1950 flood.

The deposits chosen for drilling were two of the more promising talc deposits associated with ultramafic rocks of several that had been mapped earlier by the Geological Survey, but could not be evaluated accurately because critical data were lacking that could be obtained only by sub-surface exploration.
The Rousseau talc prospect is in Cambridge township, Lamoille County, Vermont. Surface rights are owned by L. and N. N. Porter; mineral rights are owned by Eastern Magnesia Talc Co. Three drill holes encountered no talc; the other five penetrated from 2 to 110 feet of talc ore. The deposit lies on the west limb of the Green Mountain anticlinorium. The country rock consists of quartz-chlorite-sericite schist and chlorite-albite schist. The schistosity strikes slightly west of north and dips 20° - 40° to the west. The talc deposit is roughly lenticular, and although generally concordant in detail with the schistosity of the country rock, is slightly cross-cutting in overall relationship. The entire deposit is composed of Tit (talc-carbonate rock) and steatite, out is presumably derived from ultramafic igneous rooks which were first serpentinized. The dimensions of the lens are about 700 feet by 500 feet by 130 feet. The talc is of good quality and is suitable, either as a mine run product or as a flotation concentrate, for most industrial uses other than industrial steatite. No pencil stock was encountered.
The Barnes hill talc prospect is in Waterbury township, Washington County, Vermont. Surface rights are divided among Donald P. and Glenola Brown, John Barnes, and Eastern Magnesia Talc Co. One drill hole at Barnes hill was barren. The other six penetrated about 20 to 140 feet of talc ore. The deposit lies on the east limb of the Green Mountain anticlinorium. The country rock outside of the ultramafic rock body consists of quartz-chlorite-sericite schist, chlorite-albite schist; and chlorite amphibolite, which strike generally about N, 20° E. and dip steeply to the east. The ultramafic body is elliptical in plan, about 1,600 feet long and 360 feet wide. The vertical dimension is unknown. The original ultramafic rock has been almost completely serpentinized and is extensively altered to grit and steatite. The talc ore is somewhat irregularly distributed throughout the ultramafic body, but it is possible to delineate with considerable confidence portions of the body that consist predominantly of ore. The largest ore bodies are in the eastern and northern parts of the ultramafic body. The ore contains more or less admixed serpentine, and so is only of intermediate to fairly good color (whiteness). It is suitable for many industrial uses in which purity and high whiteness are not necessary. No pencil stock was seen.

Barnes' report covers investigations of coal-bearing rocks of the Kenai formation of Tertiary age in a coastal belt between Bluff Point, 1-1/2 miles west of Homer, and the head of Kachemak Bay. Cobb's report deals with similar rocks exposed along the shore between Bluff Point and Deep Creek. The present report covers an extension of this work from Deep Creek along the east shore of Cook Inlet to the most northerly exposures of rocks of the Kenai formation in the beach bluffs about 6 miles south of the mouth of the Kasilof River, Outcrops of coal-bearing rocks along the Storling Highway and the lower reaches of the Ninilchik River also were investigated. The writer, assisted by F.J. Markewicz, carried on the field work which is the basis for this report between June 1 and August 12, 1950. Field work comprised measurement of stratigraphic sections, tracing of coal beds, geologic mapping along the shorn of Cook Inlet, the lower part of the Ninilchik River, and the Sterling Highway, and sampling of coal beds.
