The sedimentary deposits of gravel, sand, silt, and clay were separated into geologic map units on the basis of their post-depositional soil development, texture, and geomorphology. Some of the geologic units are associated with different landforms having recognizable topographic expression such as alluvial fans, natural stream terraces, levees, and interfluvial basins. The relative ages of these unites were established on the basis of intensity of soil profile development, stratigraphic position, and geomorphic expression. The older deposits exhibit strongly developed soil profiles with strong horizon differentiation whereas younger deposits display minimal soil profile development, consisting primarily of organic matter accumulations near the land surface. Geomorphic expression and degree of erosion and dissection were additional criteria used to aid in the age determinations. For example, younger deposits form well-defined morphologic features such as levees, terraces, and broad, undissected alluvial fans along the margin of the bay basin and are related to present drainage patterns. The oldest deposits shown on this map (QTs) are structurally deformed by folding and faulting and therefore exhibit no original depositional geomorphic features. The survey is being directed at geologic units (including both surficial and bedrock units), both agricultural and uncultivated soils, native vegetation and farm crops, and both ground and surface waters. Emphasis is on the environment in its natural state; artificial pollution of the environment is being investigated in a few small areas-principally where such pollution is thought to complicate our efforts to determine the natural environmental character. Adequate knowledge of the natural environmental character is necessary in order to establish a background for judging the degree and extent of environmental Within the drift are sand and gravel aquifers, some of which can yield adequate water supplies for irrigation. Outwash, as much as 60 feet thick, lies at the surface. The outwash has saturated thicknesses of more than 40 feet and transmissivities of more than 50,000 gallons per day per foot locally in the northern and western parts of the area. In the places of large saturated thickness and high hydraulic conductivity, the aquifer should yield more than 600 gallons per minute to wells. Theoretical maximum yields to wells in most of the area are more than 100 gallons per minute.</p>\n<p>Chemically, water in the buried and surficial aquifers is mainly of a calcium magnesium bicarbonate type and is suitable for irrigation. Ground-water supplies of sufficient quantity and suitable quality for irrigation are available in much of the area.</p>\n<p>Quaternary glacial drift, as much as 300 feet thick, is underlain by Precambrian crystalline rocks and possibly by Cretaceous sedimentary rocks. Sand and gravel aquifers are buried at various depths in the drift and can be located by test drilling. One buried aquifer, possibly capable of high yields, is within 250 feet of the land surface in the vicinity of Belgrade.</p>\n<p>Glacial outwash comprises the upper part of the drift in most of the project area and is locally more than 100 feet thick. The outwash is made up of crossbedded sand and gravel that is interbedded in places with silt and clay deposits and has a saturated thickness of as much as 65 feet. Locally, the transmissivity of the surficial aquifer is as much as 60,000 gallons per day per foot, but elsewhere is generally less than 30,000 gallons per day per foot. The aquifer should yield more than 300 gallons per minute and locally more than 1,000 gallons per minute to individual wells in much of the northern and southwestern parts of the area.</p>\n<p>Recharge to the surficial aquifer is almost entirely from precipitation. Significant ground-water losses occur as base flow and underflow, and through evaporation and transpiration.</p>\n<p>Water in the buried and surficial aquifers is of the calcium magnesium bicarbonate type and is of suitable quality for irrigation.</p>\n<p>An analog model, simulating yearly 30-day pumping periods and hypothetical volumes and distributions of withdrawals, showed the effects on the surficial aquifer of withdrawals of about 20,000 acre-feet per pumping season for 20 years. Predicted water-level declines caused by withdrawals of 20,000 acre-feet per pumping season were generally less than 5 feet in the surficial aquifer and years Predicted water-level declines caused by withdrawals of 20,000 acre-feet pumping season caused predicted water-table declines of more than 10 feet in large parts of the area and caused lake-level declines of as much as 8 feet. The model indicated that water removed from aquifer and lake storage accounted for less than 50 percent of all withdrawals; the remainder was accounted for by water recovered from stream base flow and This report presents data obtained during the first 13 years of the proposed 20-year study. \r\n\r\nFor the period of record 1954-66, runoff from grazed watersheds has averaged about 33 acre-feet per square mile per year. Runoff from ungrazed watersheds averaged from 71 to 76 percent of that from grazed watersheds. During the last 6 years of the period, however, ungrazed watersheds produced 69 to 71 percent as much runoff as grazed watersheds. The sediment yield frown grazed watersheds during the same period was about 3 acre-feet per square mile per year. Sediment yield from ungrazed watersheds ranged from 51 to 75 percent of that from grazed watersheds and averaged 66 percent. The largest change in these relations occurred about 2 years after livestock were excluded from certain watersheds. The causative factors for changes in the runoff and sediment yield relations are not entirely clear. At the end of 13 years, a significant change had occurred in the amount of bare soil and rock. in the ground-cover index, and in the litter and moss on the grazed watersheds. These items remained essentially unchanged on ungrazed watersheds. The changes in ground-cover factors were not of large magnitude and did not occur at the same rate as the changes in runoff and sediment yield. A large part of the difference appears to have been caused by a change in the structure of surface soil. which was brought about by the elimination of trampling by livestock. \r\n\r\nDeer mice were the most common rodent present on the experimental watersheds, but even their population was not great enough to affect the composition of range vegetation. Deer mice populations remained comparable on grazed and ungrazed watersheds during the study. Other rodents were not present in sufficient numbers to allow their comparison on grazed and ungrazed range. Desert cottontail rabbits and black-tailed jackrabbits were more plentiful in ungrazed watersheds but were not present in large enough numbers to affect range vegetation.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Govt. The primary objective was to identify the causes of the occurrence and persistence of flooding and to gain data on which to base recommendations for remedial action.</p>\n<br/>\n<p>The scope of the study included establishing and operating flow and stage-recording gages on the Swamp, Kawainui Canal, and the inner canal; periodic and repeated measurements of ground-water level in test borings throughout the residential area; collection and analysis of soil and construction borings made for engineering purposes; the assembly and analysis of all available data relating surface and subsurface flow conditions, and the development of conclusions as to the causes and means to alleviate the flooding. This report presents an analysis of the problem of making continuous accurate current-meter measurements in this channel where the flow regime is changing constantly in response to tidal action. Gaging-system requirements are delineated, and a brief description is given of the several applicable techniques that have been developed by others. None of these techniques provides the accuracies required for the flowmeter calibration. A new system is described--one which has been assembled and tested in prototype and which will provide the matrix of data needed for accurate continuous current-meter measurements. \r\n\r\nAnalysis of a large quantity of data on the velocity distribution in the channel of the Sacramento River at Chipps Island shows that adequate definition of the velocity can be made during the dominant flow periods--that is, at times other than slack-water periods--by use of current meters suspended at elevations 0.2 and 0.8 of the depth below the water surface. However, additional velocity surveys will be necessary to determine whether or not small systematic corrections need be applied during periods of rapidly changing flow. \r\n\r\nIn the proposed system all gaged parameters, including velocities, depths, position in the stream, and related times, are monitored continuously as a boat moves across the river on the selected cross section. Data are recorded photographically and transferred later onto punchcards for computer processing. \r\n\r\nComputer programs have been written to permit computation of instantaneous discharges at any selected time interval throughout the period of the current meter measurement program. It is anticipated that current-meter traverses will be made at intervals of about one-half hour over periods of several days. The work consisted of a geohydrologic reconnaissance, well inventory, and test drilling. \r\n\r\nThe study sites are underlain by. Precambrian crystalline rocks, Tertiary sediments, or Quaternary glacial and alluvial deposits. The crystalline rocks are generally poor aquifers; however, some wells intercepting fractures may yield as much as 10 gallons per minute from wells 100 to 200 feet deep. Wells drilled in Tertiary sandstones to a depth of 50 to 500 feet may supply 1 to 50 gallons per minute. Wells drilled in unconsolidated glacial and alluvial deposits of Quaternary age yield the largest supplies of ground water in the Rocky Mountain National Park.
