Extensive soil conservation treatments were applied in the 12.2-squaremile Corey Creek basin, but only minor treatments were applied in the adjacent 10.2-square-mile Elk Run basin. These treatments included the construction of ponds and diversion terraces and altering land use by such measures as establishing permanent hay land and changing marginal pasture land to wood lands. Elk Run basin, which is topographically and hydrologically similar to the Corey Creek basin, was used as an external control to assist in detecting and evaluating the hydrologic changes in Corey Creek. Trend analyses of data from both basins indicate a 47-percent decrease in sediment discharge from Corey Creek during the frequent storms that occur in the May to October growing season. Six percent of the sediment discharged from Corey Creek during the period of this investigation (1954-67) was discharged during these frequent growing-season storms. The remaining 94 percent of the sediment was discharged during the November to April dormant season and during two major events during the growing season, one October 1955 and one May 1961. No decrease in sediment discharge was observed for these events or for this period. The adjacent basin of similar size, topography, and hydrologic characteristics, Elk Run, was not scheduled for extensive conservation treatment; it was selected as a control for this study \"because of the assumption that any changes in precipitation and runoff patterns would affect both basins in a similar manner. A package statistical program, STATPAC, of the U.S. Geological Survey was utilized: 1) to estimate the abundance of sodium not reported in the analyses, 2) to determine the soluble-insoluble ratio, 3) to calculate the basic statistics, and4) to investigate the correlation between the saline constituents. The statistical average composition of the soluble salines in these nitrate ores, estimated to be a close approximation of the average of Chilean ores as a whole, is as follows (in weight percent; the standard deviation is given in parenthesis): NO<sub>3</sub> 6.29(+0.60), CZ 4.58(+1.26), SO<sub>4</sub> 10(+3.16), IO<sub>3</sub> 0.060(+0.012), CZO<sub>4</sub> 0.028(+0.012), B<sub>5</sub>0<sub>9</sub> 0.50(+0.11), Na 6.90(+1.19), K 0.73(+0.36), Ca 1.81(+0.55), Mg 0.46(+0.28), percentage of solubles 31.36(+5.69).</p><p>The analyses do not give the true abundance of salines of low solubility such as anhydrite, which commonly makes up several percent of the nitrate ore, nor of several other saline ions occurring in minor or trace amounts which together generally do not make up more than a percent or two. Tables are presented for the significant correlations between relative abundances of the constituents, which give a clue to the mineralogical composition of the nitrate ore. It supersedes U.S. Geological Survey Interagency Report No. 27 (Swann et al., 1971a). Some of the illustrations are taken from the Preliminary Science Report (\"Ninety-day report\") submitted to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration by the Apollo Lunar Geology Investigation (S-059) team (Swann et al., 1971h).</p><p>Sample locations were determined from lunar surface photographs, from descriptions by the astronauts at the time of sampling, and from a correlation between sample bags in which the samples were returned and the traverse locations where those bags were used.</p><p>The lunar orientations of samples were determined from correlations between the samples, as seen in the LRL, with photographs taken on the lunar surface before the samples were collected. In several cases, NASA models of samples were used for the purpose of identification and orientation. The measured precipitation at Flynn Creek of 92.9 inches was 5 inches less than at either Needle Branch or Deer Creek. Unit flood runoff during the prelogging period was found to be lowest on Flynn Creek and highest on Needle Branch. On Needle Branch, there appear to be two distinct low-flow patterns, one for a saturated and one for an unsaturated soil condition. The average annual sediment yield was highest on Flynn Creek, 321 tons per square mile, and lowest on Needle Branch, 166 tons per square mile. The Department of the Interior and the Council on Environmental Quality will appreciate comments on the procedure here proposed.</p>\n<p>The heart of the system is a matrix which is general enough to be used as a reference checklist or a reminder of the full range of actions and impacts on the environment that may relate to proposed actions. The marked matrix also serves as an abstract of the text of the environmental assessment to enable the many reviewers of impact reports to determine quickly what are considered to be the significant impacts and their relative importance as evaluated by the originator of the impact report.</p>\n<p>Many exhaustive studies of the use of matrices for environmental studies are now being undertaken. (See Sorensen, 1971.) This comparatively simple system is intended as a guide for the many people who are faced with the evaluation and preparation of environmental impact reports before the results of these studies have been completed.
