In 1967 a nationally publicized dieoff of tremendous magnitude (estimated at several hundred million pounds of fish) in Lake Michigan resulted in losses to industry,municipalities, and recreational interests in excess of $100 million.  The cause of these mortalities is still unclear. The apparent inability of this primarily marine species to adjust completely to the Great Lakes has several suspected causes, among which failure to adjust to temperature extremes and fluctuations in the Great Lakes now appears to be of primary importance. An unexpected finding was a failure of the classic inhibitor, ouabain, to block the Na<sup>+</sup>, K<sup>+</sup>-activated component of ATPase activity in the gill.</p><p id=\"\">4. Using primarily foliar physiognomy and secondarily floristic composition, it can be shown that: (<i>1</i>) some middle latitude Tertiary assemblages probably lived under meteoroligically tropical climates; (<i>2</i>) a major and rapid climatic deterioration occurred in the Oligocene; and (<i>3</i>) a major climatic fluctuation probably occurred in the Late Eocene.</p><p>These analyses thus substantiate the conclusions of several other paleobotanists regarding climatic fluctuations. The frequency of these observations generally varies from I to 5 weeks, depending upon the magnitude of the stream flow.</p><p>This report summarizes the periodic water and air temperatures that have been recorded in Utah since that effort began. This information may be of value to individuals or agencies concerned with thermal pollution of streams, or with enforcement of water-quality standards.</p><p>A compilation of all daily water-temperature records recorded for streams in Utah by the U. S. Plasma Cl</span><sup>&minus;</sup><span>, Ca</span><sup>++</sup><span>, total CO</span><sub>2</sub><span>, and interrenal vitamin C in the trout declined continuously and in proportion to the exposure time, but the salmon were able to maintain these metabolic parameters at approximately initial levels. Blood&nbsp;</span><i>p</i><span>H and alkaline reserve regulation of the salmon was also less affected by formalin treatments, especially during prolonged exposures. The oxygen consumption of both species was depressed, but substantially more so in the trout than could be accounted for by decreased ventilation rates. Selenography","docAbstract":"<div id=\"abstracts\" class=\"Abstracts u-font-serif\"><div id=\"aep-abstract-id3\" class=\"abstract author\"><div id=\"aep-abstract-sec-id4\"><p>The Apollo whole-disk lunar photographs, with spacecraft lunar nadirs about 70° from the center of mean face, have considerable selenodetic potential provided that the requirements of resolution and precision can be met. Uncertainties in the internal camera geometry degrade the precision and make selenodetic applications doubtful, but selenographic work based on the assumption of a rigorously spherical moon makes lesser demands on the data and is still possible with useful accuracy. The selenographic method is fully developed here and applied to photographs 2505 and 2506 of Apollo 8 to produce a catalog of 635 positions. Of these 206 are farside and extend to 130° East Longitude. As a derivative of this work, geologic and artistic interpretations have been combined to produce reconstructions of the Moon's appearance at two significant points in its history. These studies show that the soil materials can be divided into 3 clay mineral provinces on the basis of the frequency distribution of clay and associated minerals. The provinces closely follow the climatic divisions. The characteristic feature of this classification is the progressive development of gibbsite from Dry to Wet Zone areas. Records for a few pertinent gaging stations in bordering States also are included. The records were collected arid computed by the Water Resources Division of the U.S. Geological Survey under the direction of W. E. Hale, district chief. These data represent that portion of the National Water Data System collected by the U.S. Geological Survey and cooperating State and Federal agencies in New Mexico. Through September 30, 1960, the records of discharge and stage of streams and canals and contents and stage of lakes or reservoirs were published in an annual series of U.S. Geological Survey water-supply papers entitled II Surface Water Supply of the United States.\" Beginning with the 1961 water year, surface-water records have been released by the Geological Survey in annual reports on a State-boundary basis. Distribution of these reports is limited; they are designed primarily for rapid release of data shortly after the end of the water year to meet local needs. The discharge and reservoir storage records for 1961-65 also are published in a Geological Survey water-supply paper series entitled \"Surface Water Supply of the United States 1961-65.\" There will Size of branch was defined by branch order, or its position in the hierarchy of tributaries. It was found that, as in river drainage nets, there is a definite logarithmic relation between branch order and lengths and numbers. This definite relation is quantitatively comparable, within limits, among river networks, tree branching systems, and several random-walk models in both two and three dimensions. Such a relation appears to be the most probable under the applicable constraints. Calcite does not yield the {015} diffraction maximum. The {006} diffraction maximum is lacking over most of the range of composition of calcite. Calcite has compositions from CaCO<sub>3</sub><span>&nbsp;</span>to Ca<sub>0.5</sub>Mg<sub>0.5</sub>CO<sub>3</sub>. Dolomite yields both the {006} and {015} diffraction maxima over its entire composition range, Ca<sub>0.6</sub>Mg<sub>0.4</sub>CO<sub>3</sub><span>&nbsp;</span>to Ca<sub>0.5</sub>Mg<sub>0.5</sub>CO<sub>3</sub>. The Ca-Mg carbonates form in isotopic equilibrium and thermodynamic disequilibrium from dispersion of Ca<sup>2+</sup>-rich water into CO<sub>3</sub><sup>2−</sup>-rich water within the alluvium. The stable isotope data suggest that all the Mg-rich carbonates are primary precipitates and not a result of Mg-substitution in precursor CaCO<sub>3</sub>. There is a correlation between<span>&nbsp;</span><i>δC</i><sup>13</sup><span>&nbsp;</span>and Mg content of the carbonates which predicts a 5%. fractionation of C<sup>13</sup><span>&nbsp;</span>between dolomite and calcite at sedimentary temperatures. C<sup>14</sup><span>&nbsp;</span>is incorporated in Ca-Mg carbonates forming from C<sup>13</sup>-poor meteoric waters and C<sup>13</sup>-rich waters from Cretaceous sediments. C<sup>14</sup><span>&nbsp;</span>ages of the Ca-Mg carbonates are apparent, and cannot be corrected to absolute values. Solution rates of calcite decrease with increasing MgCO<sub>3</sub><span>&nbsp;</span>content; dolomite dissolves slower than any calcite.</p></div></div></div><ul id=\"issue-navigation\" Interpretation of the results from the core sample is difficult because of inadequate sample, spacing, but it appears that the part of the core below about 8 cm has been undisturbed for about 10<sup>4</sup><span>&nbsp;</span>years whereas the part of the core above 10 cm may have been disturbed by recent surface activity.
