The area lies approximately 650 km southeast of the center of the Imbrium basin, a large basalt-filled multi-ringed structure in the northwest quadrant of the Moon’s near side. Several arcuate structures surround the Imbrium basin (Hartmann and Kuiper, 1962). The most prominent of these forms the northwest-facing scarp of the Apennine Mountains that crosses the area from NNE to SSW. The scarp is a major structural boundary separating mostly basin-fill deposits to the northwest from either basin-synchronous or pre-basin deposits to the southeast. Of special interest is Rima Hadley, one of the widest and freshest appearing sinuous rilles on the Moon. It cuts through the mare surface to a maximum depth of about 400 meters and may expose in its walls a substantial section of the post-basin basalt. Rimae Fresnal and Rima Bradley are typical linear rilles older than Rima Hadley and do not cut mare materials. This area was previously mapped geologically at the 1:1,000,000-scale by Hackman (1966) from telescopic data.

The areal density of craters, though variable within the region, is sufficiently high so that the craters are the dominant morphological feature. Crater morphology ranges from bright, sharp-rimmed craters to pan-shaped depressions. Superposition relations indicate that the bright-rimmed craters (unit br) are youngest and that such craters are degraded in time to shallow, subdued depressions (unit sr) and presumably to total destruction. It appears that the bright rim deposits, characteristics of the youngest craters, darken with time until their albedo is the same as that of the surrounding material (as in the unit dr). Degradation of crater rims probably is caused by superposed crater rims probably is caused by superposed impacts, burial by ejecta from more distant younger craters, and downslope movement of surficial materials. A few craters (unit d) have complex-upward walls which appear to have formed by inward slumping late in the degradation process.

For a vertical borehole interval, it is approximated by the ratio of the gravity difference to the height difference as measured between the end points of the interval. The borehole vertical gradient is strongly affected by the densities of the rocks laterally adjacent to the well. Because of this useful effect, vertical (gravimetric) density profiles of the rooks adjacent to the borehole can be calculated from the borehole vertical gradients. A second useful effect, termed the \"anomalous\" vertical gradient, is caused by non-level equal-density surfaces related to the local and regional geology. The anomalous vertical gradient can enhance exploration beyond the confines of the borehole although it is a small and commonly negligible effect. These two useful effects are not determinable with absolute accuracy from observed borehole vertical gradients without independent subsurface rock density and (or) surface gravity information.
In this study observed vertical gradients from high-precision, detailed gravity surveys made in seven shallow oil wells that penetrate a late Cenozoic sequence of marine and non-marine rocks in the Midway-Sunset Oil Field, California, are interpreted to obtain vertical density profiles. These gravimetric density profiles are adjusted 1) for anomalous vertical gradients calculated from surface gravity maps end, alternatively, measured on a portable tower and 2) for small extraneous effects of surface topography. The unadjusted and adjusted density profiles are compared with density measurements of core samples.
The unadjusted density profiles of six wells are on the average systematically greater than core densities by .05 g/cm3. Adjusted profiles for the same wells agree with core densities to within .01 g/cm3 on the average. Densities of an adjusted profile of a seventh well are .15 g/cm3 less than those of the unadjusted profile and are in better agreement with core densities by that amount. However, residual systematic discrepancies between core and gravimetric densities for this seventh well indicate a measurable variation of the anomalous vertical gradient with depth and (or) lack of representative core density data.
Topographic effects and anomalous vertical gradients in boreholes are usually small and change slowly with depth but, in some instances, may be comparatively large and change rapidly with depth. In the former case, gravimetric density profiles unadjusted for these effects can be in error by as much as about .05 g/cm3 and, in the latter case, by as much as several tenths of a g/cm3. In both cases, relative errors between neighboring parts of the density profiles are much smaller.
In cases where the anomalous vertical gradient changes appreciably with depth, it cannot be reliably estimated in the borehole from surface gravity measurements or from tower gradient measurements, which are especially sensitive to very shallow local density irregularities. At any borehole depth the anomalous gradient can be estimated from the difference between core and gravimetric densities of the same borehole interval. The core densities must be highly accurate and representative of the interval and the gravimetric density must he adjusted for topographic effects.
Measured borehole vertical gradients have precisions of .00025 to .00050 mgal/ft (8 to 16 Eotvos units) for vertical intervals as small as 10 feet (3 meters); this meets the most stringent requirements of recognized applications for borehole gravimetry. An ideal borehole density logging device would be an in-motion continuously recording vertical gravity gradiometer.

From 1968-1970 a cooperative study undertaken by the Geological Survey of Pakistan and the U. S. Geological Survey, under the auspices of the Government of Pakistan and the Agency for International Development, evaluated the chromite potential of the Zhob Valley area and provided data for effective exploration. \r\n\r\nThe Jung Tor Ghar ultramafic rock mass, covering an area of about 45 square miles, is a thrust-fault block completely surrounded and underlain (?) by sedimentary rocks as young as Late Cretaceous in age. The igneous rocks were thrust from the northwest along an east-trending, north-dipping fault in Late Cretaceous or Paleocene time and were peneplaned, dissected, and deeply laterized by mid-Eocene time. \r\n\r\nThe ultramafic rocks consist of interlayered harzburgite and dunite and a cross-cutting dunite here called transgressive dunite. Layered structure passes without discernible deviation from the interlayered harzburgite-dunite through the transgressive dunite. The lowest rocks in the mass, composed mainly of transgressive dunite, grade upward into the interlayered rock about 3,000 feet above the fault block base. The upper transgressive dunites tend to form interconnecting linear networks and probably a few pipe-like structures. The transgressive dunite is thought to have formed by action of water derived from the underlying sedimentary rocks; the water heated by the hot ultramafic rock (at the time of emplacement) altered the pyroxene to olivine and talc, and, with lowering temperature, to serpentine. Other interpretations are possible. \r\n\r\nVirtually all the chromite in the Jung Tor Ghar lies in or immediately above the masses of transgressive dunite. It is based completely on the interpretation of aerial photographs through a stereoscope, which permits a three-dimentional relief model of the ground surface to be seen, enables the geologist to study and interpret the origins of landforms with considerable ease. In fact, photointerpretation provides many advantages over both ground observations and laboratory studies of surficial materials in the mapping of surficial deposits, particularily for reconnaissance-type studies. Of course, better information can be provided when all aspects of the studyy are integrated. These preliminary photointerpretation maps are the inital stage of a continuing, more detailed study of surficial deposits in the Bay region, but they will hopefully provide map users with immediately useful information about the regional distribution of landslide and other surficial deposits.
