A reconnaissance for sources of radioactive material in North Dakota and eastern Montana was made in 1948. This reconnaissance was followed by a more detailed survey of parts of Golden Valley and Slope counties, southwestern North Dakota, in June 1949.
\nThe radioactivity of representative sections of all formations known to be exposed in the area and of three manganiferous spring deposits was determined with portable Geiger-Mueller counters. At 86 localities 82 samples were taken of these formations and also of 10 ground and surface waters.
\nOnly the lignites in the upper part of the Sentinel Butte member of the Fort Union formation in the southwestern part of N. Dak. contained more than 0.005 per cent equivalent to U3O8 . The ground and surface waters tested were for the most part non-radioactive. Water sample number 291 from locality 100, however, contained 0.17 parts per million U3O8.
\nThe radioactive lignites of N. Dak. appear to be limited to the higher buttes, such as Sentinel, Flat Top (Square Top), Bullion, H-T(Black), and White(Chalky) Buttes. One to five lignite beds are found in a 90-foot stratigraphic interval near the top of the Sentinel Butte member of the Fort Union formation, and from about 40 to 140 feet beneath the base of the overlying White River formation. The thickness of the beds ranges from a few inches to over six feet. The nomenclature, and therefore correct correlation, of all the beds above the middle part of the Sentinel Butte member is in doubt. The lignites and associated sand and clay beds are believed to be either equivalent to, or close to the base of, the Eocene Golden Valley formation.
\nThe exact mode of origin of the uranium in the lignite is not known. Uranium may have accumulated in swamps at the same time as the organic debris, or it may have been introduced by ground water after the formation of lignite. In either case carbon or carbon compounds apparently caused the precipitation or fixation of uranium. Further work is needed to determine the origin of this type of uranium deposit.

The procedure employs a simple acid leach for preparing the solution, and the uranium is determined directly on a 1.8-mg aliquot. The results obtained by using this simply procedure on several thousand samples are discussed. The quenching of the uranium fluorescence by foreign elements was found to be negligible, for all practical purposes, and results on western phosphates may be corrected by using an empirically determined quenching factor.

During World War I, the Majuba Hill mine\nproduced about 4,000 tons of 12 percent copper ore, and during World\nWar II about 23,000 tons of ore containing 2 to 4 percent copper and\nenough tin ore to furnish from 10 to 15 tons of metallic tin. No\nuranium has been produced.
\nThe bedrock geology of Majuba Hill consists of a complex;\nvolcanic neck or plug composed of rhyolite porphyry, porphyritic\nrhyolite, quartz feldspar porphyry, breccia dikes, and irregular breccia\nmasses. This plug intruded Triassic (?) sedimentary rocks, chiefly shale.
\nThe principal loci of ore deposition were (l) parts of the\nbreccia bodies, particularly where they were porous and where they were\nsilicified and tourmalinized, and (2) a few small pre-mineral fractures\nadjacent to the breccia masses, Intense hydrothermal alteration resulted\nin the formation of sericite, quartz, and tourmaline in the wall rocks.\nThis was accompanied or followed by deposition of arsenopyrite, pyrite,\ncassiterite, fluorite, and several primary sulfide minerals of copper.
\nAll of the ore bodies exposed in the mine are highly oxidized,\nand a profusion of secondary minerals of copper and iron have been found.\nThe only uranium minerals detected are the phosphates torbernite and\nmatatorbernite and the arsenate zeunerite. These are widely disseminated\nthroughout the mine in small amounts associated with the secondary\nminerals of copper and iron along minor fault surfaces, bedding planes in\nthe shale, and in porous parts of the breccia. A primary uranium mineral\nhas not been found.
\nThe secondary uranium minerals appear to be most abundant\nwhere copper ore is highest grade. Although unoxidized uranium ore\nhas not been found, it is inferred from this relation that the deposition\nof the original uranium minerals favored those areas where primary copper\nmineralization was most intense. There may have been an intimate association\nof uranium with silver in the ore, but this has not been established.\nThe U3O8 content of samples of copper ore ranges from .0.002 to 0.30 percent.
\nBecause the bottom of the oxidized ore has not been reached in\nmining or exploration, the downward extensions of the known ore bodies\nof secondary minerals would appear to be worthy of investigation to determine\nthe grade and extent of the primary ore.
