The seasonal distribution and abundance of the dominant species of Rotifera and Crustacea are given in addition to a general description of the hydrology and circulation of the northern basin of the lake. The composition and abundance of the zooplankton varied considerably over the sampling period; a generalized seasonal cycle is suggested. In 1967 a nationally publicized dieoff of tremendous magnitude (estimated at several hundred million pounds of fish) in Lake Michigan resulted in losses to industry,municipalities, and recreational interests in excess of $100 million.  The cause of these mortalities is still unclear. The apparent inability of this primarily marine species to adjust completely to the Great Lakes has several suspected causes, among which failure to adjust to temperature extremes and fluctuations in the Great Lakes now appears to be of primary importance. The fat body appears to be the phylogenetic precursor of bone marrow in higher forms, since blood cells originate and begin maturation in this tissue. Experimental animals were injected first with a hematopoietic stimulant and then (at an experimentally determined time) with pertussis vaccine to release proliferated blood cells into peripheral blood. Peripheral blood for smears was collected by cardiac exsanguination; hematopoietic tissue was extirpated for imprints; and leucocyte preparations were made by a special technique. Blood cells of the sea lamprey are apparently products of at least four distinct blast cells, each of which has a 'one end' maturation process. The non-stressed alewife is apparently an excellent ionoregulator in both environments.</div>\n<div class=\"paragraph\">Acute exposure to cold caused a shift in plasma concentrations of sodium and calcium toward environmental concentrations, i.e., these ions decreased in fresh water and increased in sea water. An ionoregulatory failure due to cold is suggested. High temperatures had little effect on plasma electrolyte levels in fresh water whereas in sea water the concentrations of sodium, potassium, and calcium were elevated. Mortalities of the alewife in the Great Lakes may be caused by osmoregulatory failure induced by acute exposure to cold, but are probably not induced by exposure to elevated temperatures. Fish thermally acclimated in the laboratory or in Lake Michigan had essentially normal concentrations of blood electrolytes.</div>\n<div class=\"paragraph\">In muscle, sodium was reduced during exposure to acute cold in both fresh water and sea water. The effect of warm water on ion levels in muscle was, in general opposite that of cold. These data suggest shifts of ions or water between cellular and extracellular fluids of muscle. Such shifts might affect the function of excitable tissue. Muscle tremors and loss of equilibrium observed in dying alewives during summer mortalities might be brought about when sudden temperature drops (e.g., as a result of upwellings which are common occurrences in the Great Lakes) induce disturbances in cellular or extracellular concentrations of ions.</div>\n<div class=\"paragraph\">In the laboratory, alewife mortalities caused by increasing or decreasing temperatures were about equal in fresh water and sea water. In the same period, the relative abundance and lengths of potential forage species were determined from trawl catches. The walleye fed almost entirely on fish. In 1959 the food was dominated first (in June and July) by yellow perch (Perca flavescens) and then, in sequence, by spottail shiners (Notropis hudsonius) and emerald shiners (Notropis atherinoides). In 1960, the walleyes fed mostly on yearling spottail shiners and emerald shiners in the spring and summer but young alewives (Alosa pseudoharengus) became the dominant food in the fall. The length of forage fish increased with the length of walleyes and walleyes of a given length usually ate forage fish within a restricted range of lengths. This size preference was shown by walleyes of the same length in the same and different months. The increased in length of forage fish with length of walleye was not proportionate. Walleyes 2.5 inches long ate forage fish 0.44 times their length whereas walleyes 15.5 inches long ate forage fish only 0.28 times their length. The diet of the walleyes changed according to species and lengths of forage fish available. Prior geohydrologic studies in the area had indicated that the limestone aquifer contained nonpotable water and was overlain by an extensive clay confining layer.</p><p>Two injection wells are presently being used to inject the waste at a rate of approximately 2,000 gallons per minute. The injection pressures are about 200 pounds per square inch. Over 3 billion gallons have been injected. Data from a current study indicate that the waste may extend outward about 1 mile from the injection wells, and pressure effects may extend outward more than 25 miles. Monitor wells show that pressure changes are following a predictable pattern. No wastes have been detected in a monitor well open to the Floridan aquifer immediately above the Bucatunna Clay Member of the Byram Formation and 100 feet from one of the injection wells.</p><p>A monitor well open to the receiving formation was constructed about 1,300 feet south of the injection wells. Geochemical effects of the wastes were detected at this well about 10 months after injection began. In early 1968, the pH of the waste was lowered to about 3. Using primarily foliar physiognomy and secondarily floristic composition, it can be shown that: (<i>1</i>) some middle latitude Tertiary assemblages probably lived under meteoroligically tropical climates; (<i>2</i>) a major and rapid climatic deterioration occurred in the Oligocene; and (<i>3</i>) a major climatic fluctuation probably occurred in the Late Eocene.</p><p>These analyses thus substantiate the conclusions of several other paleobotanists regarding climatic fluctuations. The ALSEP* seismometers can magnify lunar surface vibrations 10 million times. No instrument can operate on earth with this sensitivity, because weather and man produce too much seismic noise. To obtain answers to the above questions, seismic data must be combined with data from laboratory measurements of the physical and chemical properties of surface rocks, and many other geophyiscal and geochemical measurements. Thus far, we have had the opportunity to record data from two lunar seismic stations which were installed by the astronauts during Apollo misions &nbsp;and 12. Records for a few selected gaging stations in bordering States also are included. The records were collected and computed by the Water Resources Division of the U.S. Geological Survey, under the direction of W. L. Burnham, district chief, Water Resources Division.</p><p>Through September 30, 1960, the records of discharge and stage of streams and contents and stage of lakes or reservoirs were published in an annual series of U.S. Geological Survey water-supply papers entitled \"Surface Water Supply of the United States.\" Since 1951 there have been 20 volumes in the series; each volume covered an area whose boundaries coincided with those of certain natural drainage areas. The records in Idaho were contained in Parts 10, 12, and 13 of that series.</p><p>Beginning with the 1961 water year, streamflow records and related data have been released by the Geological Survey in annual reports on a State boundary basis. Distribution of these basic-data reports is limited; they are designed primarily for rapid release of data shortly after the end of the water year to meet local needs. The discharge and reservoir-storage records are also being published at 5-year intervals in a Geological Survey water-supply paper series entitled \"Surface Water Supply of the United States.\" These papers which show daily discharge and storage figures are compiled on the same geographical areas used for the annual series published through September 30, 1960. The daily records for 1961-65 are compiled in Water-Supply Papers 1927 (Part 10), 1933 (Part 12), and 1934 (Part 13).</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Records for a few pertinent gaging stations in bordering States are also included. The records were collected and computed by the Water Resources Division of the U.S. Geological Survey under the direction of Rex R. Meyer, district chief. These data represent that portion of the National Water Data System collected by the U.S. Geological Survey and cooperating State and federal agencies in Louisiana.</p><p>Through September 30, 1960, the records of discharge and stage of streams and contents and stage of lakes or reservoirs were published in an annual series of U.S. Geological Survey water-supply papers entitled, \"Surface Water Supply of the United States.\"</p><p>Beginning with the 1961 water year, streamflow records and related data have been released by the Geological Survey in annual reports on a State-boundary basis. Distribution of these reports is limited; they are designed primarily for rapid release of data shortly after the end of the water year to meet local needs. Records will be published in Geological Survey water-supply papers at 5-year intervals.</p><p>The Geological Survey has published records of chemical quality, suspended sediment, and water An inferred age for the sedimentary cover along the axis of the southern part of Gorda Rise suggests that no volcanism has occurred along that part of the rise for more than 100,000 years. Sea-floor spreading at the rise crest has been accommodated by sinking of a keystone block that forms the floor of Escanaba Trough, the median valley of the rise. The<span>&nbsp;</span><i>yukonensis</i><span>&nbsp;</span>zone containing<span>&nbsp;</span><i>M. craigensis</i><span>&nbsp;</span>in its upper part is followed stratigraphically higher by the<span>&nbsp;</span><i>M. pacificus</i><span>&nbsp;</span>zone – the youngest occurrence of<span>&nbsp;</span><i>Monograptus.</i><span>&nbsp;</span>The new species belong to the<span>&nbsp;</span><i>M. uncinatus</i><span>&nbsp;</span>group and, like most Praguian monograptids, have long dorsal tongues on their siculae.<span>&nbsp;</span><i>M. craigensis</i><span>&nbsp;</span>and<span>&nbsp;</span><i>M. pacificus</i><span>&nbsp;</span>increase to seven the number of species of<span>&nbsp;</span><i>Monograptus</i><span>&nbsp;</span>known from the Praguian. On the basis of the Alaskan material, the geographical distribution of<span>&nbsp;</span><i>M. aequabilis notoaequabilis</i><span>&nbsp;</span>now includes North America in addition to previously recorded occurrences in Australia, Southeast Asia, and Europe.
