P. Franklin Darn near Ft. Myers, Florida, as shown on figure L Salty water enters the lock chamber through openings of the downstream sector gates which separate tidal and fresh water; when the upstream gates open, some of the salty water moves into the upper pool, probably as a density current. Repeated injections of salty water cause a progressive increase in the salinity of the upstream water. The salty water moves upstream within the deeper parts of the river channel as far as 5 or more miles above the lock. Some mixing of the high-chloride deeper water and the fresher shallow water occurs in the affected reach above the lock, probably as a result of wind and waves, and turbulence created by boat traffic.","language":"English","publisher":"Florida Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Tallahassee, FL","collaboration":"Prepared by U.S. Geological Survey in cooperation with the Bureau of Geology, Florida Department of Natural Resources, Lee County Board of County Commissioners and U.S. Army, Corps of Engineers","usgsCitation":"Boggess, D.H., 1970, A test of flushing procedures to control salt-water intrusion at the W. Basic discharge data for periods of record through 1958 were analyzed for 59 stream-gaging stations in New Jersey and flow-duration, low-flow, and high-flow tables were presented.</p><p>The purpose of the current report is to update and expand Circular 6 by presenting, with a few meaningful statistics and tables, the bulk of the information that may be obtained from the mass of streamflow records available. The records for 79 of approximately 110 stream-gaging stations presently or previously operated in New Jersey, plus records for three stations in Pennsylvania, and one in New York are presented in summarized form. In addition to inclusing a great number of stations in this report, more years of record and more tables are listed for each station. A description of the station, three arrangements of data summarizing the daily flow records and one table listing statistics of the monthly mean flows are provided. No data representing instantaneous extreme flows are given. Plotting positions for the three types of curves describing the characteristics of daily discharge are listed for each station. Statistical parameters are also presented so that alternate curves may be drawn.</p><p>All stations included in this report have 5 or more years of record. The data presented herein are based on observed flow past the gaging station. For any station where the observed flow is affected by regulation or diversion, a \"Remarks\" paragraph, explaining the possible effect on the data, is included in the station description.</p><p>Since any streamflow record is a sample in time, the data derived from these records can provide only a guide to expected future flows. For this reason the flow records are analyzed by statistical techniques, and the magnitude of sampling errors should be recognized.</p><p>These analyzed data will be useful to a large number of municipal, state, and federal agencies, industries, utilities, engineers, and hydrologists concerned with the availability, conservation, control, and use of surface waters. The tabulated data and curves illustrated herein can be used to select sites for water supplies, to determine flood or drought storage requirements, and to appraise the adequacy of flows for dilution of wastes or generation of power. The statistical values presented herein can be used in computer programs available in many universities, Federal and State agencies, and engineering firms for a broad spectrum of research and other studies.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection","publisherLocation":"Trenton, NJ","collaboration":"Prepared by the U.S. Geological Survey in cooperation with the State of New Jersey, Deptartment of Environmental Protection, Division of Water Policy and Supply","usgsCitation":"Laskowski, S.L., 1970, Statistical summaries of New Jersey streamflow records: New Jersey Division of Water Policy and Supply Water Resources Circular 23, iii, 264 p.","productDescription":"iii, 264 p.","numberOfPages":"271","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":290107,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":290106,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/unnumbered/70047882/report.pdf"}],"country":"United States","state":"New Jersey","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -73.9024,38.9286 ], [ -73.9024,41.3574 ], [ -75.5598,41.3574 ], [ -75.5598,38.9286 ], [ -73.9024,38.9286 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"521f1bede4b0f8bf2b07617b","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Laskowski, Stanley L.","contributorId":85827,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Laskowski","given":"Stanley","email":"","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":483215,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Surface temperature at a station 333 m (1,000 ft) downstream from the discharge canal was raised an average of about 4 C, and at times by as much as 8 C. Temperature rises were greatest during the winter. Infrared imagery showed that elevated surface temperatures could be detected about 5.5 km (3 nautical miles) upstream at flood tide. Temperature profiles obtained from airborne radiation equipment revealed a complicated surface temperature pattern and also showed the effects of density differences and wind action on the steam-electric station (S.E.S.) effluent plume. Mean annual salinity for a 5-year period (1963–1967) was highest in 1966, about 12.3 ‰, and lowest in 1967, about 9.9‰. Dissolved oxygen values for 1966–1967 ranged from 3.2 to 15.6 mg/l, and saturation ranged from 55 to 152%. Turbidity levels were inversely related to salinity, with the highest annual, mean of 28 JCU (Jackson Candle Units) occurring in 1967, the lowest salinity year. The extreme tide range was 2.1 m (6.7 ft); mean water levels at the Patuxent Bridge were highest in summer and lowest in winter. Water stages are more affected by wind speed and direction than by flow in the river.","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"Chesapeake Science","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","publisher":"Springer","doi":"10.2307/1351095","usgsCitation":"Cory, R.L., and Nauman, J.W., 1970, Temperature and water-quality conditions of the Patuxent River estuary, Maryland, January 1966 through December 1967: Chesapeake Science, v. 11, no. 4, p. 199-209, https://doi.org/10.2307/1351095.","productDescription":"11 p.","startPage":"199","endPage":"209","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":277156,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":277154,"type":{"id":10,"text":"Digital Object Identifier"},"url":"https://dx.doi.org/10.2307/1351095"}],"country":"United States","state":"Maryl","otherGeospatial":"Patuxent River","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -79.4877,37.8886 ], [ -79.4877,39.723 ], [ -75.0492,39.723 ], [ -75.0492,37.8886 ], [ -79.4877,37.8886 ] ] ] } } ] }","volume":"11","issue":"4","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"52206d67e4b0645fc25e8c73","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Cory, Robert L.","contributorId":77967,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Cory","given":"Robert","email":"","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":483241,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Nauman, Jon W.","contributorId":56232,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Nauman","given":"Jon","email":"","middleInitial":"W.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":483240,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Magnetic diabase of 176 to 192 m.y. (Jurassic) in age intruding the Paleozoic (?) rocks and overlain by younger rocks onshore requires the distinction between “magnetic basement” and “basement.” Several lines of evidence suggest that the Paleozoic(?) rocks are less than 1 km thick; this implies that the diabase does not introduce a large error in depth-to-basement estimates. The dikes or their extrusive equivalents are traceable, on the basis of the magnetic data, beneath the younger sedimentary rock in the basins to the edge of the continental slope. The magnetic data also delineate a second zone of diabase dikes 90 km inland, parallel to the coast, which cross the entire country. The intrusion of the younger dikes probably coincides with rifting at the beginning of the separation of Africa and South America, and the associated magnetic anomaly zones appear to be parallel with and continuous into the anomaly bands in the Atlantic. A major northeast-trending break in the magnetic fabric intersects the coast near 9° W. and is associated with Eburnean age rocks (about 2000 m.y.) to the southeast as contrasted with Liberian-age rocks (about 2700 m.y.) to the northwest. Change in magnetic fabric direction inland from northeast to northwest in the coastal area allows recognition of a boundary between the Liberian-age rocks inland and Pan-African-age (about 550 m.y.) rocks in the coastal area northwest of about 9° 20'W. Sets of north-northwest-and west-northwest—trending faults of 1 to 2 km vertical displacement cut the Cretaceous sedimentary rocks onshore and can be traced into the offshore basins. Vertical displacements of several kilometers in the magnetic basement underlying the continental shelf suggest a pattern of block faulting all along the coast and continental shelf. Negative Bouguer anomalies exist over two Cretaceous basins in the coastal area; a negative Bouguer anomaly exists over one of the basins southwest of Monrovia, as shown by a marine traverse, suggesting that Cretaceous or younger sedimentary rocks fill these basins also. A 50 to 60 mgal positive Bouguer anomaly area exists along the coast from Sierra Leone to Ivory Coast. This anomaly correlates with mafic granulites in the Monrovia region, where the gradient is too steep to be entirely due to crustal thickening at the continental margin and may be related to tectonic activity associated with the basins. The only major break in this positive anomaly above basement rocks along the entire coast of Liberia is over granite gneiss adjacent to (and presumably underlying) the only onshore basins on the Liberian coast. Three seismic reflection profiles support the interpretation of a substantial section of sedimentary rock offshore. A suggested sequence of events indicates tectonic activity in the periods about 2700, about 2000, and about 550 m.y. B.P.; uplift and exposure of deep crustal rocks; deposition of Paleozoic sediments; intrusion of diabase dikes in inland zones; intrusion of 176 to 192 m.y.-old dikes and sills accompanying separation of Africa and South and North America; block faulting along coast and continental shelf, and active sea-floor spreading; filling of basins in Cretaceous and Tertiary(?) time; basaltic extrusion on spreading sea floor and sedimentation on continental shelf and slope.","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"GSA Bulletin","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","publisher":"Geological Society of America","publisherLocation":"Boulder, CO","doi":"10.1130/0016-7606(1970)81[3563:AAGIOT]2.0.CO;2","usgsCitation":"Behrendt, J.C., and Wotorson, C.S., 1970, Aeromagnetic and gravity investigations of the Coastal Area and Continental Shelf of Liberia, West Africa, and their relation to continental drift: GSA Bulletin, v. 81, no. 12, p. 3563-3574, https://doi.org/10.1130/0016-7606(1970)81[3563:AAGIOT]2.0.CO;2.","productDescription":"12 p.","startPage":"3563","endPage":"3574","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":267160,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":267159,"type":{"id":10,"text":"Digital Object Identifier"},"url":"https://dx.doi.org/10.1130/0016-7606(1970)81[3563:AAGIOT]2.0.CO;2"}],"country":"Liberia","otherGeospatial":"West Africa","volume":"81","issue":"12","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"51177df2e4b0893acf3fff9a","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Behrendt, John C. jbehrendt@usgs.gov","contributorId":25945,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Behrendt","given":"John","email":"jbehrendt@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"C.","affiliations":[{"id":218,"text":"Denver Federal Center","active":false,"usgs":true},{"id":213,"text":"Crustal Imaging and Characterization Team","active":false,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":473271,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Wotorson, Cletus S.","contributorId":106854,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Wotorson","given":"Cletus","email":"","middleInitial":"S.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":473272,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Glacial drift that covers the bedrock reaches a maximum thickness of 455 feet. It can be differentiated into 5 drift sheets, each of which in turn can be separated into till units, lake clay and silt units, and sand and gravel units. Input data for the program includes problem identification, control parameters, model coordinates and elastic parameter for the elastic units. The program evaluates the partitioning of ray amplitude and energy at elastic boundaries, computes the total travel time, total travel distance and other parameters for rays arising at the earth's surface. Instructions are given for punching program control cards and data cards, and for arranging input card decks. An example of printer output for a simple problem is presented.
