Regression analysis of chemical and physical data collected on Beech Creek resulted in two curves that relate the concentration of free hydrogen ion to the electrical specific conductance of the water. These curves provide a means of estimating, through use of data telemetered from a water-quality monitor on Beech Creek, the acid load in the stream at any time. These estimates of acid loads in Beech Creek will enable the operators of Foster Joseph Sayers Dam on Bald Eagle Creek to release sufficient alkaline water from the reservoir to prevent fish kills in lower Bald Eagle Creek that could be caused by the acid from Beech Creek.
The acid content of the West Branch Susquehanna River upstream from the city of Lock Haven usually exceeds the amount that can be neutralized by Bald Eagle Creek. However, inasmuch as the alkaline content of 13ald Eagle Creek exceeds the amount required to effectively neutralize the acidity of Beech Creek, some water may be conserved in the reservoir for the purpose of improving the quality of the West Branch when the river is unusually acid.

Individual equations are presented for estimating flood discharges for selected recurrence intervals up to a 25-year flood for drainage areas 0.5 square miles and larger, a 50-year flood for drainage areas 20 square miles and larger, and a 100-year flood for drainage areas 50 square miles and larger. A ratio method is used for estimating a 50-year flood for drainage areas 0.5 to 20 square miles. The equations were defined from multiple-regression analysis of flood peak records and basin characteristics for 119 continuous-record gaging stations and 114 crest-stage partial-record stations in Wisconsin and adjoining States. Of the severai basin characteristics used in this study, only drainage area, main-channel slope, lake and marsh area, and areal factors were found to be statistically significant at the 99 percent effectiveness level for all flood frequencies. Solution of a hypothetical problem is given for using the flood-frequency equations. Graphs are presented for solution of flood discharges on regulated streams where the formulas are not applicable. Flood-frequency characteristics, 2-year flood to 100-year flood, and drainage basin characteristics for stations used in the multiple regression are presented in the appendices of this report.

Palos-Kettleman City area, San Joaquin Valley, California","docAbstract":"The Dos Palos-Kettleman City area of this report includes approximately 1,350 square miles on the central-western side of the San Joaquin Valley, California. Large-scale farming operations in the area have used ground water as the major source of irrigation water for nearly three quarters of a century. In 1968, completion of the San Luis Canal part of the California Aqueduct, made surface water available to farmers. In time the widespread use of this imported water may cause chemical-quality changes in the native ground water. To document conditions prior to any possible changes, 361 samples of ground water were taken before deliveries of surface water were begun. The data will serve as a base to which future investigations can be compared. To establish any trends, the results were compared to earlier chemical data for the area. The results indicated that only minor changes in chemical quality had occurred between 1951 and 1968.
Water from an upper water-bearing zone is markedly different from water in a lower water-bearing zone. Water in the upper zone is of various chemical types, and the concentration of dissolved solids increases from east to west across the area.
Water in the lower zone is a sodium sulfate type and is fairly consistent throughout the zone.

This report is one of a series covering the 11 hydrologic subregions of the State and includes data for 87 stream sites.
\nWater temperatures, in degrees Celsius, are summarized by months, years, and for the period of record. A description is included to identify each station where data were collected. A tolerance interval analysis indicated that 99 percent of the point water-temperature observations, determined either with thermograph probes or hand-held thermometers, should be ±0.6°C of the mean water temperature at the 95-percent confidence level. The probable total error ranges from ±0.8°C for periodic data to ±1.4°C for thermograph data.

The Soil Conservation Service has found a total of approximately 3,500 floodwater-retarding structures to be physically and economically feasible in Texas. As of September 30, 1969, 1,355 of these structures had been built.
This watershed-development program will have varying but important effects on the natural surface- and ground-water resources of river basins, especially where a large number of the floodwater-retarding structures are built. Basic hydrologic data under natural and developed conditions are needed to appraise the effects of the structures on the yield and mode of occurrence of runoff .

No identifiable sources of ground-water inflow below t he surface of the river could be found in the imagery. The thermal patterns from the generating plants and the major tri butary inflow are readily apparent in imagery obtained from an altitude of 305 meters. Though the patterns are generally discernible in the imagery from 1,067-meter and 1,524-meter altitudes, there is not sufficient ground resolution to make any but the most general qualitative analyses. The quality of the imagery varied with land-water temperature relations as well as with instrument properties.
\nPortions of the tape-recorded imagery were processed in a color-coded quantization to enhance the displays and to attach quantitative significance to the data. Apparent radiant temperature computations from the 305-meter imagery were generally within l° Celsius of ground-truth data.
\nThe study indicates a marked decrease in water temperature in the Missouri River prior to early fall and a moderate increase in temperature in late fall because of the Lake Sakakawea impoundment. At the present time, thermal additions generated by the powerplants have little effect on the temperature regimen of the Missouri River at high rates of river discharge.

The study reach extends 150 miles from Pueblo to the Kansas State line (see fig. 1 index map). The water-resources investigation of the stream aquifer system in the Arkansas River valley, which began in 1963, is being made to provide information about the water resources for planning, management, and administration of the supply.
The objectives of the investigation are to define the effects of present water use, to determine the relation between ground and surface water, and to evaluate the effects of proposed changes in water law and management. The major steps in the study are: (1) Inventory the water resources, (2) describe the hydrogeologic character of the aquifer, (3) document and evaluate the effects of development, (4) construct and verify models to aid in the evaluation of the hydrology, and (5) develop models to test water-management plans and to optimize water use.

\nEarlier hydrologic studies show that ample quantities of soft water of low dissolved solids content are obtainable from the sand-and-gravel aquifer in the Pensacola area. Some wells drilled for the city of Pensacola have yielded water with unacceptably high amounts of iron and carbon dioxide, and wells have had disappointingly low yields. The city, therefore, is seeking hydrologic information, including water-quality data, in an effort to avoid the high cost of well abandonment and to plan for future expansion of the water-supply system.

Objectives and approach
\nThis study is intended to provide information on the quality and quantity of water available from the sand-and-gravel aquifer, the only fresh-water aquifer in the Pensacola area, and to delineate those areas favorable for public-supply well sites.
\n\n
The project area is southern Escambia County, from Pensacola to S.R. (State Road) 196 north of Quintette (fig. 1). During the first year, effort was concentrated in the southern half of the area, generally south of 30°30', which approximately coincides with Interstate Highway 10 in southeastern Escambia County.

The investigation included the collection of well data, chemical analyses of water samples, test drilling, radioactivity logging of test holes and other wells, and water-level measurements.

The basal Wanship conglomerate has been erroneously correlated with a conglomerate within the Frontier Formation at Coalville. The Coalville section has been dated as Cenomanian-Coniacian. The Wanship Formation at its \"type locality\" is Campanian-Maestrichtian in age, as determined by its palynomorph content, and is not correlative with the Coalville section. The Wanship is correlative with the lower Evanston Formation. Recognition of these relationships obviates the need for a hypothesized episode of folding and faulting during middle Cretaceous time in northeastern Utah.
