The moraine is an area of hills and depressions. The local relief is low in the western part of the moraine but increases to more than 200 feet in the east. Altitude of the land surface ranges from 800 feet above mean sea level where the Red River flows north out of the area to 2,040 feet near the southeastern edge of the watershed (one of the highest points in Minnesota).</p>\n<p>The area of the watershed is about 2,600 square miles and includes most of Mahnomen and Norman Counties and parts of Becker, Clay, Clearwater, and Polk Counties. The population of the area is about 37,000 people of which about 70 percent live on farms. The economy is based principally on farming. The area of lake clay and silt is used mostly for raising sugar beets and wheat; and potatoes are grown largely on the sandy soils. In the western part of the morainal area small grain, dairy, and cattle farming is the most common. The eastern part of the morainal area is important for forest products and recreation. Soil erosion and sediment deposition in urban areas are as much an environmental blight as badly paved and littered streets, dilapidated buildings, billboard clutter, inept land use, and air, water, and noise pollution. In addition, sediment has many direct and indirect effects on streams that may be either part of or very remote from the urban environment. Sediment, for example, is widely recognized as a pollutant of streams and other water bodies.</p>\n<p>One obstacle to a scientific recognition and an engineering solution to sediment-related environmental problems is that such problems are bound in conflicting and generally undefinable political and institutional restraints. Also, some of the difficulty may involve the fact that the scientist or engineer, because of his relatively narrow field of investigation, cannot always completely envision the less desirable effects of his work and communicate alternative solutions to the public. For example, the highway and motor-vehicle engineers have learned how to provide the means by which one can transport himself from one point to another with such great efficiency that a person's employment in this country is now commonly more than 5 miles from his residence. However, providing such efficient personal transport has created numerous serious environmental problems. The best mineral potential appears .to be in the Ad Dawadami district, where silver and lead were formerly mined, and in the southwestern part of the quadrangle in the vicinity of the Nafud al Urayk. Ancient mines in the southwestern part of the quadrangle were probably opened for gold, but the present exploration disclosed tungsten and antimony minerals, and slightly anomalous lead, zinc, and molybdenum. Of these elements the greatest potential appears to be tungsten. \r\n\r\nMost ancient mines and the newly discovered mineralized veins are in areas underlain by graywacke intruded by granitic stocks and apophyses. A lagoonal mode of origin is suggested for these essentially monomineralic deposits. The area is designated Zone II by the Colombian Inventario Minero Nacional(lMN). The geology of approximately 45 percent of this area, or 18,000 sq km, has been mapped by IMN. \r\n\r\nZone II has been a gold producer for centuries, and still produces 75 percent of Colombia's gold. Silver is recovered as a byproduct. Ferruginous laterites have been investigated as potential sources of iron ore but are not commercially exploitable. Nickeliferous laterite on serpentinite near Ure in the extreme northwest corner of the Zone is potentially exploitable, although less promising than similar laterites at Cerro Matoso, north of the Zone boundary. Known deposits of mercury, chromium, manganese, and copper are small and have limited economic potentia1. \r\n\r\nCement raw materials are important among nonmetallic resources, and four companies are engaged in the manufacture of portland cement. The eastern half of Zone II contains large carbonate rock reserves, but poor accessibility is a handicap to greater development at present. Dolomite near Amalfi is quarried for the glass-making and other industries. Clay saprolite is abundant and widely used in making brick and tiles in backyard kilns. Kaolin of good quality near La Union is used by the ceramic industry. Subbituminous coal beds of Tertiary are an important resource in the western part of the zone and have good potential for greater development.  Aggregate materials for construction are varied and abundant. Deposits of sodic feldspar, talc, decorative stone, and silica are exploited on a small scale.  Chrysotils asbestos deposits north of Campamento are being developed to supply fiber for Colombia's thriving asbestos-cement industry, which is presently dependent upon imported fiber. Original descriptions of the individual fault-events published in English, French, German, or Spanish were used whenever possible, supplemented by translations of selected passages of reports published in Japanese and Chinese. For some events, original descriptions were not published in these languages and secondary sources were used. Although more than 100 fault-events have been reported in the literature, only those for which reliable data (in the judgement of the present writers) were available on at least two of the three parameters M, L, and D are included in this interim report and listed in table 1. Some fault-events have been omitted because the available reports contained significantly different data for the same event and the writers had insufficient basis for choosing between them.</p><p>This report was prepared to permit early release of part of the results of a more comprehensive study of historic surface faulting now under way, and to elicit suggestions and criticisms from users of the report. Comments are especially invited regarding the methods used in designating the fault type and in identifying the main fault.</p><p>The more comprehensive report will deal with subsidiary faults as well as main faults, will have detailed citations of the sources of information, and will discuss various additional aspects of faulting. It is anticipated that reliable data on a few more faults will be obtained, and it is hoped that comments from users of this interim report will permit improvement of the comprehensive report. It occurs in Slate Belt rocks of Paleozoic age, in Coastal Plain sediments of Cretaceous age, and in alluvial deposits of Quaternary age. The area is near the inner edge of the Coastal Plain province and includes the Brewer Gold Mine, which was intermittently active until 1935 and had a total gold production valued at about $450,000. Slate Belt rocks underlie the entire area and crop out mainly in valley slopes and upper drainage ways; auriferous Coastal Plain sediments underlie a small upland, and Quaternary alluvium lies in and along streams draining the upland and adjacent areas. Gold in the bedrock at the Brewer Mine occurs chiefly in vein lodes in siliceous volcanic and metavolcanic rocks of Paleozoic age. Gold in Coastal Plain sediments is mainly in placer deposits in the lower gravel layers. Gold in Quaternary alluvial deposits is in placers in the present stream channels and in flood plain and abandoned channel deposits.
