In the summer of 1967 morphological, sedimentological, and seismic refraction studies were made on an arctic beach near Nome, Alaska, in order to better define these distinguishing characteristics.</p><p>Several distinct microrelief structures are developed during ice break-up and the melting of ice and snow on the beaches including ice-pushed ridges, kaimoo ridge and deposits, sea-ice kettles, sea- ice sand and sea-ice gravel cones, micro-outwash deposits, and microdeltaic deposits.</p><p>Sedimentological studies showed that sediment distribution along the beach is random with no increasing or decreasing median diameters, or sorting coefficients, or sand-gravel percentages, either along the strandline or along the beach profile. This random grain size distribution is attributed to the relatively low energy along the coast of the Seward Peninsula. Further, the beaches are insulated from the elements by ice for about 6 months out of the year and the beach sediments are disturbed annually by ice-push. Longshore drift appeared to vary from east to west during the summer of 1967 with a net transport to the east.</p><p>The seismic refraction study on the Nome beach indicated that internal stratigraphy of the overburden could be interpreted and correlated with known onshore and offshore stratigraphic units. The project was initiated at the request of Mr. Carlos Vincenty, Director, Department of Industrial Research, Economic Development Administration of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. The purpose of the survey was to obtain information on the configuration arid structure of the basin and if possible, to locate areas which might be favorable for the accumulation of oil or gas. The samples were collected in 1969 as part of the Heavy Metals Program of the U.S. Geological Survey.</p><p>The most comprehensive discussion of the geology of the study area is a report by A. F. Buddington and Theodore Chapin (1929). Known metalliferous lodes of the area are described and additional references to specific areas are given by Berg and Cobb (1967). Additional data is given in reports by Herbert and Race (1964) and Alaska Department of Mines (1950). The samples were collected in 1969 as part of the Heavy Metals Program of the U.S. Geological Survey.</p><p>The most comprehensive discussion of the geology of the study area is a report by A. F. Buddington and Theodore Chapin (1929). Known metalliferous lodes of the area are described and additional references to specific areas are given by Berg and Cobb (1967). Additional data is given in reports by Condon (1961), Smith (1914), and Wright and Wright (1908). The four most damaging floods during the year were in December in the Far Western States, in March along the Ohio River, in September in central and northern Florida and southern Georgia, and in June in northwestern Montana.</p><p>The floods of December in the Far Western States were the most damaging in the history of the area. Record-breaking discharges occurred in an unusually large area Oregon, northern California, western Nevada and Idaho, end southern Washington. Forty-seven lives were lost, and damage amounted to several hundred million dollars.</p><p>Two storms in early March along the Ohio River caused maximum discharges of record on many streams in Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana and also high dis- charges in parts of Illinois, West Virginia, and Pennsylvania. Eighteen lives were lost, and flood damage was about /$100 million.</p><p>In September, Hurricane Dora, the first hurricane of record to cross north- eastern Florida from the Atlantic Ocean, caused outstanding floods in northern Florida and southern Georgia. Flood damage exceeded $100 million.</p><p>The most severe floods of record in northwestern Montana occurred on both sides of the Continental Divide following heavy rains in early June. All anomalies are low except one for tin and one for tungsten in the granitic plug west of Jabal Sahah. Debris from this small plug contains as much as 1,000 ppm (parts per million) tin in wadi sand, and a concentrate from the sand contains as much as 40 ppm molybdenum and 1,000 ppm tungsten. The area of this small plug and the metamorphic rock around the plug should be studied in detail to learn distribution and value of tin, tungsten, niobium, and molybdenum in the rocks. Target areas in the scene were selected for training the computer. Statistical parameters of radiance such as mean, standard deviation, divergence, and covariance were computed for each category of material. These data were used in the computer program to determine which channels are most useful for recognition of all object categories studied, and to actually classify all the unknown data points into the known categories.</p><p>The following terrain types have been mapped with greater than 80 percent accuracy in a 12-square-mile area with 1,800 feet of relief: bedrock exposures, talus, vegetated rock rubble, glacial kame terrace, glacial till, forest, bog, and water, and shadows. In addition, shadows of clouds and cliffs are depicted.</p><p>In addition, studies were made of the effectiveness of the proposed Earth Resources Technology Satellite (ERTS) data channels as compared to the computer-selected best four channels in the automatic recognition and mapping of the same terrain types based on simulations, using the same set of data.</p><p>These simulations resulted in maps whose accuracies were only a few percent less than that using the best set of four channels; they indicate that the ERTS data channels are likely to be successful for terrain analysis of a wide variety of categories encompassing a broad range of spectral reflectance.</p><p>These studies also indicate that, for a broad range of terrain categories, many' combinations of 3 or 11 channels of data would be satisfactory.
