The basic steps in the evaluation procedure were (1) definition of the long-term goals of the streamflow data program in quantitative form, (2) examination and analysis of all available data to determine which goals have already been met, and (3) consideration of alternate programs and techniques to meet the remaining objectives. None of the goals could be met by generalization of the data for gaged basins by regression analysis. This fact indicates that significant changes should be made in the present data program to obtain better areal coverage to achieve the goals set. A streamflow data program based on the guidelines developed in this study is proposed for the future.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological The samples were collected in 1969 as part of the Heavy Metals Program of the U.S. Geological Survey.</p><p>The most comprehensive discussion of the geology of the study area is a report by A. F. Buddington and Theodore Chapin (1929). Known metalliferous lodes of the area are described and additional references to specific areas are given by Berg and Cobb (1967). Additional data is given in reports by Condon (1961), Smith (1914), and Wright and Wright (1908). All anomalies are low except one for tin and one for tungsten in the granitic plug west of Jabal Sahah. Debris from this small plug contains as much as 1,000 ppm (parts per million) tin in wadi sand, and a concentrate from the sand contains as much as 40 ppm molybdenum and 1,000 ppm tungsten. The area of this small plug and the metamorphic rock around the plug should be studied in detail to learn distribution and value of tin, tungsten, niobium, and molybdenum in the rocks. Depth intervals tested and sampled were: zone 1, 1,710 feet to total depth; zone 2, 1,508 to 1,706 feet; zone 3, 1,266 to 1,464 feet; zone 4, 788 to 986 feet; and zone 5, 400 to 598 feet.&nbsp;</p><p>Injection and recovery tests were run on each depth interval. Relative specific capacities calculated from injection data were much smaller than those calculated from recovery data. More mud and lost circulation material in the hole and in the formation during the injection test account for the different relative specific capacities.&nbsp;</p><p>Comparative composite hydrostatic heads before and after the injection and recovery tests were 211.5 feet below lsd (land-surface datum) and 218.0 feet below lsd. The difference may be due to differences in the conditions of the measurements.&nbsp;</p><p>Of the five zones tested, only zone 5 did not have at least partial communication around the bottom R. Mabey and F. Keller to delineate the source of the aeromagnetic total-intensity anomaly that was interpreted as being the expression of a commercial magnetite deposit.</p><p>Results of the investigation indicate that a zone of magnetite more than 1700 meters in length lies beneath southward protruding ridges and the adjoining margin of a wadi in the central part of the area; and that a small zone of less economic importance occurs beneath a low ridge to the east. Within these zones, the magnetite probably occurs as lenticular masses, stringers, and veins, which aggregate in substantial quantities that constitute the richer parts and are marked by magnetic anomalies.</p><p>The main zone is inferred to be the source of the total -intensity anomaly and is several hundred meters longer than is indicated by the wide-spaced aeromagnetic profiles. This zone averages about 75 meters in width. It may contain as much as 50 percent magnetite, however an estimate of the tonnage represented cannot be made reliably without more complete subsurface information.</p><p>A study of drilling sites in the area reveals that most of the holes are along the south edge of the main zone and were not properly located to test the richer parts as indicated by our magnetic data.</p><p>Drill hole N 40, which was abandoned in November owing to broken drilling equipment, is properly located to test the richest part of the main magnetite-bearing zone. When properly impacted against a stiff material the device measures the amount of rebound of a spring-loaded hammer, with the rebound of the hammer being directly proportional to the strength of the material tested. Application of this instrument to rock, specifically water-saturated zeolitized tuff, is demonstrated through a set of correlation diagrams that relate Schmidt hammer rebound values, obtained from core samples and from the sites where samples were taken, to physical properties measured on rock samples in the laboratory. The properties include compressive strength, compressional and shear velocities, and dynamic and static Young's shear and bulk moduli. The correlation diagrams apply only to zeolitized tuff of the type found at the Nevada Test Site in its natural state (freshly excavated). These diagrams enable the user of the L-type Schmidt hammer to immediately obtain values of physical properties of such rocks in place, a convenience desirable where conventional sampling is not feasible or is impossible, and when results are required on short notice. The charts apply to L-type hammers that are calibrated to a nominal rebound value of 74. Glen Ullin, a small agricultural community on the Northern Pacific Railroad, about 52 miles west of Bismarck, is near the center of the quadrangle (fig. 1).</p><p>The Glen Ullin quadrangle is one of a group of 14 adjoining 71/2-minute quadrangles (fig. 1) that are being mapped by the U.S. Geological Survey to furnish a basis for classification of lands withdrawn by the Federal Government pending classification for coal and to contribute to the geologic map atlas of the United States. Most of the fieldwork for the Glen Ullin quadrangle was done during the late summers and early falls of 1964 and 1965.</p><p>During the summer of 1966 the U.S. Geological Survey conducted a drilling program in the Glen Ullin and nearby quadrangles (Smith, 1970) to gather information on the existence, thickness, and depth of lignite beds in withdrawn Federal lands.
