Some birds may be nearly finished with the complete molt before other individuals begin, so that specimens taken at any given time may differ by as much as two months in the age of their plumage. No characters useful in ageing birds after the completion of the autumn molt were found.....The proposed racial subdivision of Sitta canadensis was based on misleading evidence resulting from variation of plumage age in birds assumed to be seasonally comparable, sooting of birds in industrialized parts of the country, and variation in quality of prepared specimens.","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"Wilson Bulletin","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","usgsCitation":"Banks, R., 1970, Molt and taxonomy of red-breasted nuthatches: The Wilson Bulletin, v. 82, no. 2, p. 201-205.","productDescription":"201-205","startPage":"201","endPage":"205","numberOfPages":"5","costCenters":[{"id":531,"text":"Patuxent Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":16281,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://elibrary.unm.edu/sora/Wilson/v082n02/p0201-p0205.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":198309,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"82","issue":"2","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b04e4b07f02db699259","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Banks, Richard C.","contributorId":20440,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Banks","given":"Richard C.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":338152,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The exact cause of death is undetermined but it is believed that destruction of the insulating qualities of the plumage permits ambient cold temperatures and evaporation to lower the body temperature to a lethal level. The original concept of using these materials as bird-control tools was developed in 1958 at the Patuxent Wildlife Research Center, Bureau of Sport Fisheries and Wildlife Laurel, Maryland.  Early field trials by personnel of the Division of Wildlife Services and the Denver Wildlife Research Center indicated that ground-application techniques had promise but limitations of the equipment precluded successful large-scale roost treatments.  In 1966, Patuxent Center personnel began using tanker-type aircraft to evaluate high-volume aerial applications of wetting agents.  The success of these tests led to the use of small aircraft to make low-volume, high-concentration aerial applications just prior to expected rainfall.  Recent trials of the low-volume method show that, with some limitations, it is effective, inexpensive, and safe to the environment.  Current research emphasizes the screening of new candidate materials for efficacy, biodegradability, and toxicity to plants and non-target animals, as well as basic investigations of the avian physiological mechanisms involved.  Field trials to develop more effective application techniques will continue. DDD is also a commercial insecticide. large amounts of both are frequently found in birds, but the significance of these amounts has puzzled many owrkers. Studies at Clear Lake, California<span id=\"_mce_caret\" data-mce-bogus=\"true\"><sup>1</sup><span id=\"_mce_caret\" data-mce-bogus=\"true\"> gave some data on DDD danger levels, but less is known of DDE, the member of the DDT group that is most frequent and most abundant in nature. Although DDE is toxic, relatively alrge residues are found in apparently healthy animals. In early years of organochlorine pesticide use, widespread mortality occurred immediately following heavy applications of these chemicals, and survivors contained substantial amounts of toxicant in their tissues.  Repopulation from untreated areas tended to conceal the extent of the effects. DDT and dieldrin have become ubiquitous and the original source of the chemicals producing bird deaths often cannot be traced.  The extent of sublethal effects cannot be fully appraised, although laboratory experiments continually reveal new and potentially deleterious physiological reactions.      Thin eggshells have become prevalent among certain declining species of predatory birds. Shell thinning and associated reproductive effects have been produced experimentally in mallard ducks and in sparrow hawks.  Coturnix quail fed dietary dosages of p,p'-DDT produced fewer eggs than did untreated birds and the eggs had thinner shells.  Hatchability was not significantly altered.  Comparisons between these results and those obtained in other studies indicate significant species differences.","largerWorkType":{"id":4,"text":"Book"},"largerWorkTitle":"Proceedings of the symposium, the biological impact of pesticides in the environment","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":12,"text":"Conference publication"},"language":"English","publisher":"Oregon State University","publisherLocation":"Corvallis, Oregon","usgsCitation":"Stickel, L., and Rhodes, L., 1970, The thin eggshell problem, chap. <i>of</i> Proceedings of the symposium, the biological impact of pesticides in the environment, p. 31-35.","productDescription":"5 p.","startPage":"31","endPage":"35","costCenters":[{"id":531,"text":"Patuxent Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":201397,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a4fe4b07f02db628497","contributors":{"editors":[{"text":"Gillett, J.W.","contributorId":81221,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Gillett","given":"J.W.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":506090,"contributorType":{"id":2,"text":"Editors"},"rank":1}],"authors":[{"text":"Stickel, L.F.","contributorId":41095,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Stickel","given":"L.F.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":327914,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Rhodes, L.I.","contributorId":54705,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Rhodes","given":"L.I.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":327915,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}
