By design the instrument detected fluorescence specifically at the sodium D2 Fraunhofer line (5890 angstroms). The granules are used as a vehicle for airborne emplacement of poison to control fire ants in the eastern and southeastern United States. The granules are dropped with considerable precision but some targets are inevitably missed. It was hoped that the FLD could aid in detecting missed target areas. Test results showed that the granules are detectable by FLD but that the concentration must be too great to be practical with the present FLD. Little or no sub-bottom penetration was observed in areas of sand and gravel on the major banks and ledges. Sonic penetration in the silt- and clay-filled basins was to the acoustic basement and in excess of 40 m where the acoustic basement was beyond instrument range. Stratification and unconformities were observed locally in the penetrable sediments. The fine-grained penetrable sediments in the major basins and near the coastline are inferred to originate from two sources: 1) glaciomarine deposits of mostly rock flour deposited during the retreat of the ice from the western Gulf of Maine, and 2) silt and clay winnowed from the banks and ledges and redeposited in the topographic lows during the Holocene lowering and later rise in sea level. The local unconformities, contacts between stratified and non-stratified sediments, and a shallow sub-bottom reflector observed in Cape Cod Bay may have been formed during the Holocene emergence and submergence of the western Gulf of Maine. Changes in sedimentation rates appear to be related to deglaciation, late-glacial submergence, and Holocene sea level changes.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological The basic steps in the evaluation procedure were (1) definition of the long-term goals of the streamflow data program in quantitative form, (2) examination and analysis of all available data to determine which goals have already been met, and (3) consideration of alternate programs and techniques to meet the remaining objectives. None of the goals could be met by generalization of the data for gaged basins by regression analysis. This fact indicates that significant changes should be made in the present data program to obtain better areal coverage to achieve the goals set. Depth intervals tested and sampled were: zone 1, 1,710 feet to total depth; zone 2, 1,508 to 1,706 feet; zone 3, 1,266 to 1,464 feet; zone 4, 788 to 986 feet; and zone 5, 400 to 598 feet.&nbsp;</p><p>Injection and recovery tests were run on each depth interval. Relative specific capacities calculated from injection data were much smaller than those calculated from recovery data. More mud and lost circulation material in the hole and in the formation during the injection test account for the different relative specific capacities.&nbsp;</p><p>Comparative composite hydrostatic heads before and after the injection and recovery tests were 211.5 feet below lsd (land-surface datum) and 218.0 feet below lsd. The difference may be due to differences in the conditions of the measurements.&nbsp;</p><p>Of the five zones tested, only zone 5 did not have at least partial communication around the bottom Dak. (fig. 1), for the U.S. Geological Survey from June 7 to September 15, 1966. This prospect drilling was undertaken to gather data on the thickness, quality, and extent of lignite beds and the lithologic characteristics of the rocks in the Sentinel Butte and Tongue River Members of the Fort Union Formation. This information is in support of geologic mapping and as part of a program of mineral land classification. A preliminary lithologic description of the cores, drill samples, and chemical analyses of the lignite beds sampled in each hole, drill samples, and chemical analyses of the lignite beds sampled in each hole are given.</p><p>Partial core and drill samples of the 19 holes drilled may be inspected at the North Dakota Geological Survey, Grand Forks, N. Detailed studies of Cambrian marine dolomite rocks in the Red Lion Formation and in the upper part of the Pilgrim Limestone resulted in their division into distinct rock units, termed lithofacies. These lithofacies contain features suggestive of subtidal, intertidal, and supratidal environments similar to those presently forming in the Persian Gulf. Stromatolltic structures occurring in the uppermost part of the Red Lion Formation are similar to those presently forming in Shark Bay, Australia. \r\n\r\nThe Ruby Range within the map area is broken into a series of northwest-plunging basement (Precambrian metamorphic rock) blocks, differentially uplifted during the Cretaceous-Tertiary orogenic period. These blocks are bordered by upthrust faults, which are nearly vertical in their lower segments and are .low-angle in their uppermost parts. Asymmetrical folds in Paleozoic sedimentary rocks formed in response to the differential uplift of the blocks; thus they too plunge to the northwest. Displaced masses of rock border the range on the three sides within the map area and are interpreted as gravity-slide features resulting from uplift of the range. Records are available for 15 sites, and the length of record ranges from 60 years for the gaging station on the Santa .Cruz River at Tucson to 6 years for Pantano Wash near Vail. The analysis provides information on flow duration, low-flow frequency magnitude, flood-volume frequency and magnitude, and storage requirements to maintain selected draft rates. Flood-peak information collected from the gaging stations has been projected on a regional basis from which estimates of flood magnitude and frequency may be made for any site in the basin. \r\n\r\nMost streams in the 3,503-square-mile basin are ephemeral. Ground water sustains low flows only at Santa Cruz River near Nogales, Sonoita Creek near Patagonia, and Pantano Wash near Vail. Elsewhere, flow occurs only in direct response to precipitation. The median number of days per year in which there is no flow ranges from 4 at Sonoita Creek near Patagonia to 335 at Rillito Creek near Tomson. The streamflow is extremely variable from year to year, and annual flows have a coefficient of variation close to or exceeding unity at most stations. \r\n\r\nAlthough the amount of flow in the basin is small most of the time, the area is subject to floods. Most floods result from high-intensity precipitation caused by thunderstorms during the period ,July to September. Occasionally, when snowfall at the lower altitudes is followed by rain, winter floods produce large volumes of flow.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Govt. Print.
