The only mineral material that has been produced within the Clear Lake Roadless Area is clayey sand used as fill for highway construction and for stabilizing Forest Service roads. Fuller's earth, common clay, and sand and gravel presently are produced in Leon County and in nearby counties, and limestone and peat have been produced in the past. However, no commercial deposits of these commodities exist in the Clear Lake Roadless Area. The Apalachicola National. Forest has been explored for phosphate and the region reconnoitered for heavy minerals, but no valuable deposits of either have been found.
\nThe potential for finding valuable mineral deposits or oil and gas in the Clear Lake Roadless Area is low. However, the area and nearby lands have not been thoroughly tested for oil and gas, and the possibilities for discovery cannot be ruled out.

\nThe generally small uraniferous deposits are in the Chinle Formation, mostly in the basal Shinarump Member, and mostly on the east side of the Paria Plateau. To the south and west, around the plateau, the Shinarump host rock pinches out or is present in only a few places, and the same relationships are likely below the plateau, where the host rocks are deeply buried, from 1,500 to 3,000 ft below the surface. These factors suggest the total uranium-copper-vanadium-silver potential to be very low.
\nGold and mercury occur in very low concentrations in the clayey units of the Petrified Forest Member of the Chinle. Gold concentrations are 40 ppb and less, and the gold is present in very fine particles; recovery is very difficult. Overall, the mercury concentrations are so low that no realistic mineral resource potential can be estimated.
\nNonmetallic mineral materials of possible value include limestone, flagstone, clay, and gravel, but they are of only local interest. No oil or gas resources are known in the study area. Coal resources within the area are nonexistent, but the Dakota Sandstone does contain coaly beds a few miles to the north.
\nWater is perhaps the most significant resource needed in the study area. A number of perennial springs support the few local ranchers and tourist facilities. Some ground water would be available below the plateau, but drilling depths would be more than 2,000 ft (600-700 m).

Analytical data for these samples and a map of smapling sites are presented by du Bray and Dellinger (1980) and Diggles and others (1981). A geologic map of the area was compiled by du Bray (1981). These maps and tables present the results of the analysis of geochemical data for lead, zinc, gold, silver, arsenic, chromium, molybdenum, manganese, tungsten, tin, copper, and nickel. These are elements of economic interest which have historically been found in mineral deposits of the Sierra Nevada or other geologically similar areas.

Although favorable geologic environments for placer gold deposits and manganese vein deposits are present in the study area, the probability of discovering economically exploitable deposits of these metals is low, and not encouraging. Even more speculative is the study area's porphyry copper potential which is based solely on the possibility of favorable host terranes underlying the study area at depth. The study area does contain substantial deposits of pumice, but their economic significance is probably minor. A part of the study area has been previously designated a Known Geothermal Resource Area (KGRA).

Many workers have studied the section over the past 130 years, paying most attention to the fossiliferous Sankaty Sand. The earliest study was by Desor and Cabot (1849) followed by Verrill (1875), Cushman (1904), Wilson (1906), and Gustavson (1976). Currently the section at the cliff is exposed as a result of erosion during a severe winter storm in 1978. The exposure allowed a detailed study of the selection and the results of the study are included in this report and three others (Oldale and others 1981; Oldale, 1981; and Oldale and others, in press). The last report discusses the stratigraphy, structure, absolute age, and paleontology of the deposits at Sankaty Head. The southern part of the Sankaty Head cliff, where the most complete marine section is, has been stable and obscured by dense vegetation over many of the past 130 years. In the future, the cliff face could again become stabilized and overgrown, or continued erosion could destroy some of the beds now exposed. These photographs provide a record of the cliff face, beds, and structures looked in 1979. Finally, the Sankaty Head section is realtively remote, and these photographs together with a geologic profile of the cliff shown by Oldale and others (1981) may substitute for field trips to the site, albeit a somewhat less satisfying experience.
