Glacial drift that covers the bedrock reaches a maximum thickness of 455 feet. It can be differentiated into 5 drift sheets, each of which in turn can be separated into till units, lake clay and silt units, and sand and gravel units. This amount of runoff is almost entirely derived from precipitation falling on the basins, and is eventually discharged into Long Island Sound. In 1965, some streamflow originated from 5.5 billion gallons of water imported from the Housatonic River basin. Rainbow trout were anesthetized with MS-222 (Sandoz) or methylpentynol and catheterized. Urine was collected at selected intervals up to 48 hr. 2. Effects of MS-222 anesthesia on urine flow and composition were isolated from the stress of catheterization by re-anesthetizing the fish 18 to 20 hr post catheterization. 3. Urine output patterns were similar following MS-222 or methylpentynol anesthesia and catheterization. Highest urine flows were measured 4 to 8 hr post treatment. The highest urine output after re-anesthetization with MS-222 was observed 2 to 4 hr post-anesthesia. 4. Highest concentrations of Na2+, K+, Ca2+, Cl- and inorganic PO4 in the urine were measured in the first 2 hr after anesthesia and catheterization. 5. Flow rates and chemical composition of urine indicate that \"normal\" renal function is re-established 12 to 24 hr post-treatment.","language":"English","publisher":"Elsevier","doi":"10.1016/0010-406X(70)90029-0","usgsCitation":"Hunn, J.B., and Willford, W., 1970, The effect of anesthetization and urinary bladder catheterization on renal function of rainbow trout: Comparative Biochemistry and Physiology, v. 33, no. 4, p. 805-812, https://doi.org/10.1016/0010-406X(70)90029-0.","productDescription":"8 p.","startPage":"805","endPage":"812","costCenters":[{"id":606,"text":"Upper Midwest Environmental Sciences Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":258258,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"33","issue":"4","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505bab14e4b08c986b322bde","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Hunn, J. Records for a few pertinent gaging stations in bordering states also are included. The records were collected and computed by the Water Resources Division of the U.S. Geological Survey under the direction of W. E. Hale, district chief. These data represent that portion of the National Water Data System collected by the U.S. Geological Survey and cooperating State and Federal agencies in New Mexico. Through September 30, 1960, the records of discharge and stage of streams and canals and contents and stage of lakes or reservoirs were published in an annual series of U.S. Geological Survey water-supply papers entitled Surface Water Supply of the United States.\"\nBeginning with the 1961 water year, surface-water records have been released by the Geological Survey in annual reports on a State-boundary basis. Distribution of these reports is limited; they are designed primarily for rapid release of data shortly after the end of the water year to meet local needs. The outcrops extend from Cape Lisburne (sec. 1) in the west to Egaksrak River (sec. 29) in northeastern Alaska and are used as the basic building blocks for the carbonate facies maps and the cross section. Lithologic and foraminifera samples were collected at 10-foot intervals and rugose corals were collected within each section where found. The rock material was cut into thin section, and petrographic and microfossil studies were made to determine environments of deposition, facies, diagenetic changes, and microfossil content. Coral collections were studied in thin section.","largerWorkTitle":"Proceedings of the geological seminar on the North Slope of Alaska, 1970","language":"English","publisher":"American Association of Petroleum Geologists","publisherLocation":"Tulsa, OK","usgsCitation":"Armstrong, A.K., and Mamet, B.L., 1970, Biostratigraphy and dolomite porosity trends of the Lisburne Group, chap. <i>of</i> Proceedings of the geological seminar on the North Slope of Alaska, 1970, p. Results of high-pressure melting experiments indicate that the primitive melt must contain at least 20% MgO in order to have olivine as a liquidus mineral. The least fractionated lavas of both volcanoes have olivine (Fa13) on the liquidus at 1 atmosphere, suggesting that the only substance lost from the primitive melt, during a rather rapid ascent to the surface, is olivine. This relation allows the primitive composition to be computed by adding olivine to the composition of an erupted lava until total MgO is at least 20 percent.</p><p>Although roughly similar, historic lavas of the two volcanoes show a consistent difference in composition. The primitive melt of Mauna Loa contains 20% more dissolved orthopyroxene, a high-temperature melting phase in the mantle, and is deficient in elements such as potassium, uranium, and niobium, which presumably occur in minor low-melting phases. Mauna Loa appears to be the older volcano, deriving its magma at higher temperature and greater depth from a more depleted source rock.</p></div></div>","language":"English","publisher":"Springer","doi":"10.1007/BF00600044","issn":"00281042","usgsCitation":"Murata, K.J., 1970, Tholeiitic basalt magmatism of Kilauea and Mauna Loa volcanoes of Hawaii: Die Naturwissenschaften, v. 57, no. 3, p. 108-113, https://doi.org/10.1007/BF00600044.","productDescription":"6 p.","startPage":"108","endPage":"113","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":203377,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Hawaii","otherGeospatial":"Kilauea volcano, Mauna Loa volcano","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -155.29586791992188,\n 19.368158505739146\n ],\n [\n -155.19699096679688,\n 19.368158505739146\n ],\n [\n -155.19699096679688,\n 19.441989391028706\n ],\n [\n -155.29586791992188,\n 19.441989391028706\n ],\n [\n -155.29586791992188,\n 19.368158505739146\n ]\n ]\n ]\n }\n },\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -155.67489624023438,\n 19.41867799583191\n ],\n [\n -155.53756713867188,\n 19.41867799583191\n ],\n [\n -155.53756713867188,\n 19.536495698592987\n ],\n [\n -155.67489624023438,\n 19.536495698592987\n ],\n [\n -155.67489624023438,\n 19.41867799583191\n ]\n ]\n ]\n }\n }\n ]\n}","volume":"57","issue":"3","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a54e4b07f02db62bdaa","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Murata, K.
