The samples were collected in 1969 as part of the Heavy Metals Program of the U.S. Geological Survey.</p><p>The most comprehensive discussion of the geology of the study area is a report by A. F. Buddington and Theodore Chapin (1929). Known metalliferous lodes of the area are described and additional references to specific areas are given by Berg and Cobb (1967). Additional data is given in reports by Condon (1961), Smith (1914), and Wright and Wright (1908). Little or no sub-bottom penetration was observed in areas of sand and gravel on the major banks and ledges. Sonic penetration in the silt- and clay-filled basins was to the acoustic basement and in excess of 40 m where the acoustic basement was beyond instrument range. Stratification and unconformities were observed locally in the penetrable sediments. The fine-grained penetrable sediments in the major basins and near the coastline are inferred to originate from two sources: 1) glaciomarine deposits of mostly rock flour deposited during the retreat of the ice from the western Gulf of Maine, and 2) silt and clay winnowed from the banks and ledges and redeposited in the topographic lows during the Holocene lowering and later rise in sea level. The local unconformities, contacts between stratified and non-stratified sediments, and a shallow sub-bottom reflector observed in Cape Cod Bay may have been formed during the Holocene emergence and submergence of the western Gulf of Maine. Changes in sedimentation rates appear to be related to deglaciation, late-glacial submergence, and Holocene sea level changes.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological The vast size of Alaska, its great ranges of physiography, and the lack of data for much of the State precluded a comprehensive analysis of all flood determinants. Peak stream discharges, where gaging-station records were available, were analyzed for 2-year, 5-year, 10-year, 25-year, and 50-year average-recurrence intervals. A regional analysis of the flood characteristics by multiple-regression methods gave a set of equations that can be used to estimate floods of selected recurrence intervals up to 50 years for any site on any stream in Alaska. The equations relate floods to drainage-basin characteristics. The study indicates that in Alaska the 50-year flood can be estimated from 10-year gaging- station records with a standard error of 22 percent whereas the 50-year flood can be estimated from the regression equation with a standard error of 53 percent. Also, maximum known floods at more than 500 gaging stations and miscellaneous sites in Alaska were related to drainage-area size.
