Greater than 2 percent lead and 1 percent zinc were detected semiquantitatively in sulfide-bearing hand samples from one locality, and more than 10 percent lead was analyzed in a related stream sediment sample. The base metals as sulfides, along with barite, have been concentrated in Paleozoic and(or) Mesozoic sedimentary chert. Several other localities at which sulfides appear to be weathering are present within a 100-square-mlle area. As the population grows and the area develops, zoning becomes necessary to assure the most beneficial use of the land, especially of the flood plains. To establish land-use zones on the flood plains, the area subject to inundation and elevation of floods must be considered. Many Dutch tectonists--Brouwer, Umbgrove, van Bemifielen, Smit4Sibinga, Vening Meinesz, Westerveld, and others--recognized that this complex cluster of islands represents an early stage in the evolution of orogenic belts. Not until Indonesia is understood can we comprehend the Alps. </p><p>This report summarizes some aspects of work to date on the Tectonic Map of Indonesia. The preparation of this map is a joint project of the Geological Survey of Indonesia and the United States Geological Survey, sponsored by the Government of Indonesia and the United States Agency for International Development. </p><p>The Tectonic Map of Indonesia will be published at a scale of 1:5,000,000. Adjacent regions in other countries will be included to provide a broader context. The map limits presently envisaged are the parallels of 12° N. and 15° S., and the meridians of 91° and 148° E. Tectonic features will be shown in many colors and patterns. Bathymetry is being newly compiled, and will be shown with contours and shades of blue. March precipitation was light, but at the end of the month water content of snow on the ground was as much as 8 inches in some parts of the area. Unusually heavy rains in the fall of 1968 throughout the area, and as much as 3 inches of localized spring rain in the Red River basin during the period April 7-10, 1969, accentuated the flooding.</p><p>Flood data are presented for 285 gaging sites in this report. Peak stages and discharges exceeded previous known maxima in the upstream tributaries of the Red River of the North, upper Minnesota River basin, upper basin of West Fork Des Moines River, and the James, Vermillion, and Big Sioux River basins. In many other basins the 1969 floods were the second highest in many years of record. Recurrence intervals exceeded 50 years for 71 of the 178 sites for which recurrence intervals were computed.</p><p>Flood-crest elevations and flood profiles show the peak stages expressed in mean sea level at many points in the Mississippi, Minnesota, Red, Souris, West Fork Des Moines, Rock, and Little Rock River basins.</p><p>Sediment discharge data obtained in a small part of the lower Minnesota River basin indicated varying yields during the month of April ranging from 26 to 396 tons per square mile.</p><p>Aerial photography during the flood was obtained in a number of river basins. The river reaches which were photographed are tabulated and the location of the photographs indicated.</p><p>Flood damages were estimated to be about $147 million in the six States of North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa,&nbsp;Wisconsin, and Illinois. The basic steps in the evaluation procedure were (1) definition of the long- term goals of the streamflow data program in quantitative form, (2) examination and analysis of all available data to determine which goals have already been met, and (3) consideration of alternate programs and techniques to meet the remaining objectives. It was found that many of the goals could be met by generalization of the data for gaged basins by regression analysis. This fact indicates that significant changes could be made in the present data program that would allow emphasis to be placed on attaining the goals that have not been met.
