Soil erosion and sediment deposition in urban areas are as much an environmental blight as badly paved and littered streets, dilapidated buildings, billboard clutter, inept land use, and air, water, and noise pollution. In addition, sediment has many direct and indirect effects on streams that may be either part of or very remote from the urban environment. Sediment, for example, is widely recognized as a pollutant of streams and other water bodies.</p>\n<p>One obstacle to a scientific recognition and an engineering solution to sediment-related environmental problems is that such problems are bound in conflicting and generally undefinable political and institutional restraints. Also, some of the difficulty may involve the fact that the scientist or engineer, because of his relatively narrow field of investigation, cannot always completely envision the less desirable effects of his work and communicate alternative solutions to the public. For example, the highway and motor-vehicle engineers have learned how to provide the means by which one can transport himself from one point to another with such great efficiency that a person's employment in this country is now commonly more than 5 miles from his residence. However, providing such efficient personal transport has created numerous serious environmental problems. Obstacles to recognition of and action to control sediment problems in and around urban areas are akin to other environmental problems with respect to the many scientific, engineering, economic, and social aspects.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/cir601E","usgsCitation":"Guy, H., 1970, Sediment problems in urban areas: U.S. Geological Survey Circular 601, v, 8 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/cir601E.","productDescription":"v, 8 p.","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":346,"text":"Indiana Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":392,"text":"Minnesota Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":478,"text":"North Dakota Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":532,"text":"Pennsylvania Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":34685,"text":"Dakota Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":30915,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/circ/1970/0601e/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":118396,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/circ/1970/0601e/report-thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a0be4b07f02db5fbfca","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Guy, Harold P.","contributorId":6434,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Guy","given":"Harold P.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":147707,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Four of the trenches are in Mississippian rocks, and one is in Permian rocks. Of the Mississippian rocks, the highest grade phosphatic interval is at the Wheat Grass Creek locality. Here the phosphatic rocks are 14.9 feet thick, and a 5.8-foot-thick zone has an average of 22.1 percent P2O5. Mex., in rocks ranging from Silurian to Holocene in age at depths of 0-15,020 feet. Targets of present exploration are Permian formations in the Delaware Basin and northwest shelf areas at depths of less than 4,000 feet. Most of the reported sulfur occurrences in the shelf area are in the 'Abo' (as used by some subsurface geologists), Yeso, and San Andres Formations and the Artesia Group. Sulfur deposition in the dense dolomites of the 'Abo,' Yeso, and San Andres Formations is attributed to the reduction of ionic sulfate by hydrogen sulfide in formation waters in zones of preexisting porosity and permeability. A similar origin accounts for most of the sulfur deposits in the formations of the Artesia Group, but some of the sulfur in these formations may have originated in place through the alteration of anhydrite to carbonate and sulfur by the metabolic processes of bacteria in the presence of hydrocarbons. \r\n\r\nExploration in the Delaware Basin area is directed primarily toward the Castile Formation. Sulfur deposits in the Castile Formation are found in irregular masses of cavernous brecciated secondary carbonate rock enveloped by impermeable anhydrite. The carbonate masses, or 'castiles,' probably originated as collapse features resulting from subsurface solution and upward stopping. Formation of carbonate rock and sulfur in the castiles is attributed to the reduction of brecciated anhydrite by bacteria and hydrocarbons in the same process ascribed to the formation of carbonate and sulfur in the caprocks of salt domes.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/cir628","usgsCitation":"Hinds, J.S., and Cunningham, R.R., 1970, Elemental sulfur in Eddy County, New Mexico: U.S. Geological Survey Circular 628, 13 p. :ill., maps. ;26 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/cir628.","productDescription":"13 p. :ill., maps. ;26 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":124601,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/circ/1970/0628/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":30882,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/circ/1970/0628/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a09e4b07f02db5fb0c5","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Hinds, Jim S.","contributorId":29800,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Hinds","given":"Jim","email":"","middleInitial":"S.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":147650,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Cunningham, Richard R.","contributorId":32914,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Cunningham","given":"Richard","email":"","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":147651,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

The basic steps in the evaluation procedure were (1) definition of the long- term goals of the streamflow-data program in quantitative form, (2) examination and analysis of all available data to determine which goals have already been met, and (3) consideration of alternate programs and techniques to meet the remaining objectives. The principal goals are (1) to provide current streamflow data where needed for water management and (2) to define streamflow characteristics at any point on any stream within a specified accuracy. It was found that the first goal generally is being satisfied but that flow characteristics at ungaged sites cannot be estimated within the specified accuracy by regression analysis with the existing data and model now available. This latter finding indicates the need for some changes in the present data program so that the accuracy goals can be approached by alternate methods. The regression method may be more successful at a future time if a more suitable model can be developed, and if an adequate sample of streamflow records can be obtained in all areas. In the meantime, methods of transferring flow characteristics which require some information at the ungaged site may be used. A modified streamflow-data program based on this study is proposed.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Salt Lake City, UT","doi":"10.3133/ofr71322","usgsCitation":"Whitaker, G., 1970, A proposed streamflow-data program for Utah: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 71-322, ii, 46 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr71322.","productDescription":"ii, 46 p.","numberOfPages":"48","costCenters":[{"id":610,"text":"Utah Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":162774,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1971/0322/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":84778,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1971/0322/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Utah","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b1ae4b07f02db6a8858","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Whitaker, G.L.","contributorId":36983,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Whitaker","given":"G.L.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":236638,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Because of its anticipated use in analog or digital hydrologic models, agricultural pumpage is estimated for unit areas.</p><p>Estimated municipal pumpage is based on census figures and population projections and on pumpage reported by organizations in the San Joaquin Valley supplying water to communities. The host rocks are arkosic sandstones, deposited in intermontane basins under fluvial conditions, and derived from the granitic cores of mountain ranges that flank the basins. The host rocks are Eocene and possibly Paleocene in age and are, or were, overlain by a sequence of continental tuffaceous siltstones, sandstones, and conglomerates 400-700 meters thick.&nbsp;</p><p>Most of the ore is unoxidized and lies below the water table. It contains pyrite, uraninite, coffinite, marcasite, hematite, ferroselite, and native selenium(?). The ore bodies range in size from a few hundred to several hundred thousand tons of material containing 0.10-5 percent U308. As mined, the ore averages about 0.25 percent U<sub>3</sub>0<sub>8</sub>.</p><p>The ore bodies are genetically related to and lie at the margins of large tongues of altered sandstone. The character of the alteration and the distribution of several elements within and near the altered sandstone suggest that the ore-bearing fluid was ground water, neutral to slightly alkaline and oxidizing with respect to the elements being transporter.</p><p>Roll-type deposits in littoral and fluvial sandstones have recently been discovered in the Gulf Coastal Plain area of Texas. This heavy rainfall, combined with the generally wet antecedent conditions of the spring season and some runoff from snowmelt, caused considerable flooding of the rivers in the area. Property damage in Massachusetts from the flood was reported by the New England Division, Corps of Engineers (1968) to be $28 million. Most of the damage occurred where construction, both industrial and domestic, had encroached upon the flood plains of the rivers.</span></p>\n<p><span>The Sudbury and Assabet Rivers join at Concord, Mass., to form the Concord River (see fig. 1). This three-river system, which is known locally as the &ldquo;SuAs-Co&rsquo;&rsquo; basin, drains an area of about 405 square miles.</span></p>\n<p><span>The purpose of this report, which is one of a series covering the major flooded rivers in eastern Massachusetts, is to show flood stages and areas inundated by the March 1968 flood, to compare the severity of this flood with past floods, and to show the frequency of floods of given magnitudes which may be expected in the future at gaging stations in the basins. These basic flood data, as compiled, will serve as a broad, sound basis to assist state and local planners in such measures as flood-plain zoning and flood containment and prevention.</span></p>\n<p>&nbsp;</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ha371","usgsCitation":"Petersen, R.G., Wood, G.K., and Gadoury, R.A., 1970, Flood of March 1968 on the Sudbury, Assabet, and Concord Rivers, Massachusetts: U.S. Geological Survey Hydrologic Atlas 371, 2 Plates: 47.00 x 40.50 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/ha371.","productDescription":"2 Plates: 47.00 x 40.50 inches","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":677,"text":"Wisconsin Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":186307,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"},{"id":393058,"rank":4,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_15750.htm"},{"id":91808,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/ha/371/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":91807,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/ha/371/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"scale":"12000","country":"United States","state":"Massachusetts","otherGeospatial":"Assabet River, Concord River, Sudbury River","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -71.631,\n              42.25\n            ],\n            [\n              -71.25,\n              42.25\n            ],\n            [\n              -71.25,\n              42.648\n            ],\n            [\n              -71.631,\n              42.648\n            ],\n            [\n              -71.631,\n              42.25\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49f2e4b07f02db5eed14","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Petersen, Richard G.","contributorId":44232,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Petersen","given":"Richard","email":"","middleInitial":"G.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":277636,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Wood, G. In this report most of the emphasis is placed on the map distribution of these materials and on a description of their physical properties. Much of the information presented on the geologic map in the form of abbreviated columnar sections is from water-well and exploration drill holes; the remainder is from foundation excavations and natural rock outcrops. A brief description of the composition and thickness of each map unit is given in the Explanation.</p><p>The generalized statements that follow, regarding the engineering properties of the map units, are based on field observations and on general performance information obtained from local engineers, contractors, builders, and property owners. It is hoped that this information, used in conjunction with the geologic map and cross sections, will be helpful to land-use planners and developers, engineers, public officials, and others in making preliminary plans and designs. It is obvious that such information cannot and should not take the place of detailed field and laboratory investigations that are required in the design of specific engineering structures.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr70198","usgsCitation":"Lindvall, R.M., 1970, Geologic map of the Arvada quadrangle, Colorado: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 70-198, Report: 7 p.; 3 Plates: 24.30 x 30.19 inches or smaller, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr70198.","productDescription":"Report: 7 p.; 3 Plates: 24.30 x 30.19 inches or smaller","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":152417,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1970/0198/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":498424,"rank":5,"type":{"id":26,"text":"Sheet"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1970/0198/sheet-3.pdf","text":"Sheet 3","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":498423,"rank":4,"type":{"id":26,"text":"Sheet"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1970/0198/sheet-2.pdf","text":"Sheet 2","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":498422,"rank":3,"type":{"id":26,"text":"Sheet"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1970/0198/sheet-1.pdf","text":"Sheet 1","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":498421,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1970/0198/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"scale":"24000","country":"United States","state":"Colorado","otherGeospatial":"Arvada quadrangle","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -105.125,\n              39.875\n            ],\n            [\n              -105.125,\n              39.75\n            ],\n            [\n              -105,\n              39.75\n            ],\n            [\n              -105,\n              39.875\n            ],\n            [\n              -105.125,\n              39.875\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b11e4b07f02db6a23b2","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Lindvall, Robert M.","contributorId":34523,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Lindvall","given":"Robert","email":"","middleInitial":"M.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":181617,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

In the summer of 1967 morphological, sedimentological, and seismic refraction studies were made on an arctic beach near Nome, Alaska, in order to better define these distinguishing characteristics.</p><p>Several distinct microrelief structures are developed during ice break-up and the melting of ice and snow on the beaches including ice-pushed ridges, kaimoo ridge and deposits, sea-ice kettles, sea- ice sand and sea-ice gravel cones, micro-outwash deposits, and microdeltaic deposits.</p><p>Sedimentological studies showed that sediment distribution along the beach is random with no increasing or decreasing median diameters, or sorting coefficients, or sand-gravel percentages, either along the strandline or along the beach profile. This random grain size distribution is attributed to the relatively low energy along the coast of the Seward Peninsula. Further, the beaches are insulated from the elements by ice for about 6 months out of the year and the beach sediments are disturbed annually by ice-push. Longshore drift appeared to vary from east to west during the summer of 1967 with a net transport to the east.</p><p>The seismic refraction study on the Nome beach indicated that internal stratigraphy of the overburden could be interpreted and correlated with known onshore and offshore stratigraphic units.
