The best mineral potential appears .to be in the Ad Dawadami district, where silver and lead were formerly mined, and in the southwestern part of the quadrangle in the vicinity of the Nafud al Urayk. Ancient mines in the southwestern part of the quadrangle were probably opened for gold, but the present exploration disclosed tungsten and antimony minerals, and slightly anomalous lead, zinc, and molybdenum. Of these elements the greatest potential appears to be tungsten. \r\n\r\nMost ancient mines and the newly discovered mineralized veins are in areas underlain by graywacke intruded by granitic stocks and apophyses. The Maskelyne DA region, at the southeastern edge of the Mare </span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW154141912 BCX8\">T</span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW154141912 BCX8\">ranquillitatis</span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW154141912 BCX8\">, is in the area transitional between mare and terra. Patches of </span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW154141912 BCX8\">typical</span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW154141912 BCX8\"> terra material occur on northwest-trending </span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW154141912 BCX8\">ridges</span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW154141912 BCX8\">, and typical heavily cratered mare materials </span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW154141912 BCX8\">occurs</span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW154141912 BCX8\"> only in the east-central part of the region. The terrain in the rest of the region, including the potential landing site, is exceptionally smooth and deficient in craters more than 50 m (meters) in diameter. The studies are being made in support of epidemiological investigations of the Surveillance Project to provide general information pertaining to the occurrence and distribution of chemical elements in rocks, soils, plants, and water throughout the State. Emphasis is placed on the occurrence and distribution of elements in the natural environment, though studies of the effects of some types of chemical pollution are necessarily included. The objectives and plans for the three phases of the Survey that are directed at the rocks, soils, and vegetation are described in the progress report for the first six-month period; those for the phase of the project concerned with the water are described by Gerald L. Feder in a later section of the present report. The addition of this latter phase significantly expands the scope of our study and increases its relevance to studies of human and animal health. Mr. Feder has a valuable background in the geology and hydrology of Missouri, and we are most pleased that he has joined us in this The purpose of this survey was to determine if structure exists in the 12,000-ft sedimentary section or in the Precambrian basement that might be related to the series of earthquakes that occurred in the area starting in the spring of 1962. A paper on the seismic-reflection profiling by Ben R. Rummerfield, A. Peter Olson, and D. B. Over 4,000 samples of rocks, soils, vegetation, and groundwater have been collected from throughout the State; most of these are currently in the Geological Survey laboratories under various stages of preparation and analysis. Some preliminary results have been reported in the two previous progress reports, and others are presented here. It is expected that the major part of the analytical task will be completed in the next 6 to 12 months, however, and forthcoming reports should include information of direct application to the epidemiological investigations of the Environmental Health Center. The present report is intended to inform those concerned of our progress, our plans for the forthcoming final field season of the investigation, and to offer some additional preliminary results. Of specific interest to the Environmental Health Center will be the maps showing localities throughout the State where samples, or groups of samples, of rocks, soils, vegetation, and water have been collected so far; the sampling plans have been discussed briefly in the previous progress reports, and will be described in detail, of course, in forthcoming reports along with analyses and
