Very weak propylitic alteration of biotite and plagioclase occurs in the marginal part of the mineralized area. Where mineralization is stronger most of the plagioclase and some of the orthoclase and biotite are replaced by a montmorillonitetype clay, resembling beidellite, and hydrous mica. The third phase is localized along quartz-pyrite veins where the wall rock, commonly as much as an inch from the vein, is replaced by quartz and seriate. In contrast to the localization of quartz-sericite alteration along the veins, clay alteration is general and can be seen between the veins wherever the rock is not completely sericitized. Thus these two types of alteration cannot be separated areally. Subsequent field investigations with a Geiger-Mueller counter were made of the creek gravels and the placer-gold paystreak on the bench ground of Sweepstakes Creek and its tributaries, the syenite stock of Granite Mountain to the north, of Sweepstakes Creek, and the creek gravels of Rube and Anzac Creeks which are tributaries of the Peace River east of the syenite stock. </p>\n<br/>\n<p>The content of radioactive minerals in the gravels and in the placer-gold paystreak was found to be disappointingly low. There concentration ratios were between 45 and 169 to 1, the content of concentrates from the creek gravels is only .001 to .016 percent equivalent uranium the average content of the creek gravels in place is computed as .0001 percent equivalent uranium. The placer-gold paystreak was not accessible in place, but the content was computed as .0003 percent equivalent uranium from the sluice-box concentrates and tailings at Winder's open-cut,the only active placer mine in the area in 1945. The radioactive minerals are relatively abundant in such gravity concentrates as the sluice-box concentrates, and are particularly abundant in certain size fractions of these sluice concentrates Thus the concentrates from the aluiee-fcex, after screening through 20-mesh, showed 0.04 percent equivalent uranium. Individual issues contain information on volcanic activity, volcano research, and volcano monitoring in Hawaii. Information on volcanic activity at other locations is also occasionally included.</p><p>The Volcano Letter was published by HVO through multiple changes in administration, including the Hawaiian Volcano Research Association (1925 to 1932), the U.S. Geological Survey (1932 to 1935), the Department of the Interior (1935 to 1938), and the University of Hawai‘i (1938 to 1955). Issues 1-262 were published weekly from January 1, 1925, to January 2, 1930, and consisted of a single page of text. Issues 263-384, also published weekly, from January 9, 1930, to May 5, 1932, were generally longer—four pages— and provided more detail on volcanic activity, including photographs, maps, and plots. Weekly issues 385-387, published May 12-26, 1932, were a single page of text due to budget reductions brought on by the Great Depression. Budget restrictions reduced the publishing frequency to monthly for issues 388-428, covering the period of June 1932 to October 1935; these issues were generally shorter, 1-2 pages, and sometimes featured figures. From November 1935 to July 1938, issues 429-461 remained monthly but increased in length (generally eight pages) and featured figures frequently. Issues 462-530, published over the period of August 1938 to December 1955, varied in length from 2-15 pages, but were published quarterly, rather than monthly.</p><p>Six of the Volcano Letters are
