The controlling factors are the depth, quality, and thickness of the coal beds. The first regulations were issued April 8, 1907; others followed in 1908, 1909, and 1913. Except for minor changes in 1959, the regulations of 1913, which were described in U.S. Geological Survey Bulletin 537, have been the guiding principles for coal-land classification. Changes made herein from the standards previously used are: (1) a maximum depth of 6,000 feet instead of 5,000 feet, (2) a maximum depth of 1,000 feet instead of 500 feet for coals of minimum thickness, (3) use of Btu (British thermal unit) values for as-received foal instead of air-dried, and (4) a minimum Btu value of 4,000 for as-received coal instead of 8,000 for air-dried. An additional modification is that the maximum thickness of 8 feet which was designated in the Classification Chart for Coal Lands in 1959 is changed to 6 feet. The reaches studied extend from near the south Linn County line upstream to U.S. Highway 218 on Hoosier Creek, and from the mouth to U.S. Highway 218 on South Hoosier Creek. A total of about 11 miles of stream is included in the two reaches. The profiles shown in the report are computed for a very large flood under existing valley conditions and for a smaller flood under two assumed conditions of encroachment. This information can be used to supplement the existing county zoning ordinances for flood plains and to aid in future flood-plain management when part or all of the area is urbanized. Dak. (fig. 1), for the U.S. Geological Survey from June 7 to September 15, 1966. This prospect drilling was undertaken to gather data on the thickness, quality, and extent of lignite beds and the lithologic characteristics of the rocks in the Sentinel Butte and Tongue River Members of the Fort Union Formation. This information is in support of geologic mapping and as part of a program of mineral land classification. A preliminary lithologic description of the cores, drill samples, and chemical analyses of the lignite beds sampled in each hole, drill samples, and chemical analyses of the lignite beds sampled in each hole are given.</p><p>Partial core and drill samples of the 19 holes drilled may be inspected at the North Dakota Geological Survey, Grand Forks, N. S. Geological Survey under the auspices of the Government of Indonesia and the Agency for International Development, U. S. Five independent variables are required for use of the relations. They are the size, length, and slope of the basin, which may be measured from maps, and the percentage of impervious surface and type of drainage system, which may be evaluated by a basin inspection but in actual practice will usually be estimated for future developed conditions. Based upon analysis of flood information for 81 sites, 59 of which are in the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area, the relations should be useful for design of drainage systems and for definition of good limits. The relations presented are applicable only to the Washington, D.C., area, but the method of analysis is general and may be used for any .area where the major floods result from rainfall. \r\n\r\nUrban and suburban development are shown .to affect floodflows to a significant degree. Improvements of the drainage system may reduce the lag time to one-eighth that of the natural channels. This lag-time reduction, combined with an increased storm runoff resulting from impervious surfaces, increases the flood peaks by a factor that ranges from two to nearly eight. The flood-peak increase depends upon the drainage-basin characteristics and the flood recurrence interval.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Govt. Print. Much arable land in the basin lacks water for irrigation, and the potentially irrigable acreage far exceeds the amount that could be irrigated with the 140,000 acre-feet estimated annual water yield. Therefore, the amount of uncommitted water that could be intercepted and used within the basin is the limiting factor in further development of agriculture irrigated with water derived from within the basin; Water for additional irrigation might be obtained by pumping more ground water, but only if large additional ground-water storage depletion can be tolerated.
