Water management agencies are increasingly interested in potential use of recharge for pollution abatement, waste-water disposal, and re-use and reclamation of locally available supplies. Research projects and theoretical analyses of operational recharge systems show increased scientific emphasis on the practice. Overall ground-water basin management systems generally now contain considerations of artificial recharge, whether by direct or indirect methods. Artificial ground-water recharge is a means of conserving surface runoff for future use in places where it would otherwise be lost, of protecting ground-water basins from salt-water encroachment along coastal areas, and of storing and distributing imported water. The biblio-graphy emphasizes technology; however, annotations of articles on waste-water reclamation, ground-water management and ground-water basin management are included. Subjects closely related to artificial recharge, including colloidal flow through porous media, field or laboratory instrumentation, and waste disposal by deep well injection are included where they specifically relate to potential recharge problems. Where almost the same material has been published in several journals, all references are included on the assumption that some publications may be more readily available to interested persons than others. Other publications, especially those of foreign literature, provided abstracts that were used freely as time limitations precluded obtaining and annotating all materials. Abstracts taken from published sources are noted. Where an author has more than one publication, the arrangement is chronological; where an author has more than one publication in a given year, a, b, c, . . . are added. The indexing is by subject and geographic location. Each article was assigned the key words or phrases to best characterize its contents. Units of measure are as they were in the original article; abbreviations retained are generally those in common use such as mg/1 (milligrams per liter), ppm (parts per million), gpm (gallons per minute), km (kilometers), m (meters), cu m per hr (cubic meters p^r hour), cfs (cubic feet per second), me/1 (milliequivalents per liter), psi (pounds per square inch), BOD (biochemical oxygen demand), sq m (square meters), gpd (gallons per day), and mgd (million gallons per day). The bibliography was prepared because of the worldwide interest in the field of artificial recharge and the need for a single source of references to the literature published since 1954. The work is a sequel to the \"Annotated Bibliography on Artificial Recharge of Ground Water Through 1954,\" by D. K. By design the instrument sensed radiation from the ground specifically at the sodium D2 Fraunhofer line (5890 angstroms). It is capable of detecting a fluorescence component emanating from ground targets irradiated by sunlight along the line of flight, provided the aircraft is nearly level. However, no signals attributable to fluorescence were recorded during 540 miles of aerial traverses over southeastern California and west-central Arizona. It is concluded that exposed surfaces of target materials throughout the traverses were either non-luminescent at 5890 A or not sufficiently so to be detectable. It cannot be ruled out that the lack of fluorescence is partly attributable to surficial coatings of non-luminescent weathered material.</p><p>The principal route surveyed from the air was from Needles, California to Furnace Creek Ranch, Death Valley and return via the Amargosa River valley, Silurian Lake (dry), Silver Lake (dry), and Soda Lake (dry). Principal targets traversed were unconsolidated elastic sediments ranging from silty clay to cobbles, and a wide range of evaporite deposits. Evaporite minerals thought to have been viewed in high concentrations are halite (sodium chloride), gypsum (hydrous calcium sulfate), probably other sulfate minerals, borax and probably ulexite (hydrous sodium borates), possibly colemanite (hydrous calcium borate), and probably some carbonate minerals. Extensive manganese-rich outcrops midway between Needles and Prescott had to be by-passed because of low sun-angles, cloudiness, and a heavy load in relation to altitude (above 5,000 feet).</p><p>Several of the more common evaporite minerals were tested under the FLD on the ground, while being irradiated by bright sunlight. Minerals tested were chiefly from salt fiats (salars) in the Atacama Desert of northern Chile, and included halite, gypsum, ulexite, thenardite (sodium sulfate), aragonite (calcium carbonate) and nitrate ore containing soda niter (sodium nitrate). Crude oil from the Santa Barbara leak was tested in its natural state and in solutions of methyl-isobutyl-ketone (MIBK). Petroliferous sandstone samples containing both high and moderate concentrations of oil were tested on both fresh and weathered surfaces. No response definitely attributable to fluorescence at 5890 A was noted from any of the foregoing geologic materials, although a possible very weak response to one oil sample in MBK solution appears on the record.</p><p>Although no fluorescence was detected, the mechanical operation of the FLD was satisfactory throughout 8 hours of flight, with attendant vibrations, and during a wide range of sun angles, from 13° to 33°. In accord with design, the FLD showed no appreciable response to moderate contrasts in reflectivity among targets, although there was a marked response to strong contrasts in reflectivity. It describes the emergent and semiemergent plants most likely to be found in inland and coastal marshes. It omits hundreds of uncommon marsh plants and plants less characteristic of marshes than of marsh edges, lake and stream shores, or wet meadows.</p>\n<br/>\n<p>The first of the series, \"Pondweeds and Pondweedlike Plants of Eastern North America,\" Circular 187, was broadened in scope as Resource Publication 44, \"Underwater and Floating-leaved Plants of the United States and Canada,\" and is superseded by it. The present publication, widens the scope of \"Bulrushes and Bulrushlike Plants of Eastern North America,\" Circular 221, and contains most of the species listed therein.</p>\n<br/>\n<p>This guide is designed for identification of marsh plants without recourse to technical botanical keys. To use it, read pages 1 to 4 and then look at the drawings. Those that provide him with earnings, recreation, or enjoyment are considered beneficial; those that compete with him for food, or ruin his possessions or environment, are quickly dubbed pests. But all men do not have the same interests or the same environment, so many animals attain both a beneficial and a pest status.</p>\n<p>The wild nutria in the United States is one of these animals with a dual nature. It is most numerous in the Gulf States, particularly in Louisiana and Texas, where the sale of nutria fur and meat in some years is a several-million-dollar industry. Although it is a valuable resource, it sometimes causes so much agricultural damage that it is also classified as a pest.</p>\n<p>In the late 1950's, nutria damage to sugarcane and rice became so acute that the people of Louisiana and Texas asked the Federal Government for help. Research on the problem was assigned to the Division of Wildlife Research, Bureau of Sport Fisheries and Wildlife, which is responsible, among other things, for developing methods to control damage by wild animals. The Division's Denver Wildlife Research Center established field stations at Houma, Louisiana, and Beaumont, Texas, and in 1963 work was begun under congressional appropriation to fulfill this public request.</p>\n<p>The goal of the Houma and Beaumont stations was to develop a sound, scientific solution to the problem of controlling nutria damage. IT WAS NOT A PROGRAM OF ERADICATION. Because of the involvement of the fur and meat industry, the beneficial aspects of nutria had to be continuously recognized when potential methods of control were evaluated. Especially sought were workable control procedures that could be readily used by laymen. These would have to be relatively selective for nutria and safe for humans, domestic animals, and other wildlife. In 1967, four years after our studies were begun, we had found methods to solve the current and immediately foreseeable problems of nutria damage.</p>\n<p>This report presents much of the information we gathered during this four-year period about nutria and how to control them. Because it is meant primarily for the general public, it omits the specific references to the scientific literature that pepper most technical reports, but it does present background information on the history, biology, and behavior of nutria, particularly those in the Gulf Coast Region. The control methods presented, when used as directed, are safe and effective and provide solutions for most situations, including those where people want to alleviate nutria damage without killing the nutria.
