Particles that escape estuaries or are discharged by rivers into the shelf region tend to travel longshoreward rather than seaward. Suspended matter farther offshore, chiefly amorphous organic particles, totals 0.1 milligram per liter or less. Soot, fly ash, processed cellulose, and other pollutants are widespread.","language":"English","publisher":"American Association for the Advancement of Science","doi":"10.1126/science.167.3917.371","issn":"00368075","usgsCitation":"Manheim, F., Meade, R., and Bond, G.C., 1970, Suspended matter in surface waters of the Atlantic continental margin from Cape Cod to the Florida Keys: Science, v. 167, no. 3917, p. 371-376, https://doi.org/10.1126/science.167.3917.371.","productDescription":"6 p.","startPage":"371","endPage":"376","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":218996,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","otherGeospatial":"Atlantic Coast, Cape Cod to the Florida Keys","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -69.30448487922725,\n 42.4316994974582\n ],\n [\n -72.55464556767248,\n 41.20980515572195\n ],\n [\n -74.87685291353552,\n 39.965583129565516\n ],\n [\n -78.47801633910318,\n 35.29856159140553\n ],\n [\n -82.08981655845598,\n 31.43677885050294\n ],\n [\n -80.4882285968991,\n 26.29286457898407\n ],\n [\n -81.7136812341486,\n 24.206568202367023\n ],\n [\n -79.91183013678796,\n 23.951693165340927\n ],\n [\n -69.30448487922725,\n 42.4316994974582\n ]\n ]\n ],\n \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n }\n }\n ]\n}","volume":"167","issue":"3917","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505ba2fde4b08c986b31fad9","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Manheim, F.T. 0000-0003-4005-4524","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0003-4005-4524","contributorId":55421,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Manheim","given":"F.T.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":358311,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Meade, R.H.","contributorId":27449,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Meade","given":"R.H.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":358310,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Bond, G. Field data required include soil-water retention curves, water table depth and a record of air temperature, air humidity and wind velocity at one elevation. The procedure takes into account the relevant atmospheric factors and the soil's capability to conduct 'water in liquid and vapor forms. It neglects the effects of thermal transfer (except in the vapor case) and of salt accumulation. Homogeneous as well as layered soils can be treated. Results obtained with the method demonstrate how the soil evaporation rates·depend on potential evaporation, water table depth, vapor transfer and certain soil parameters.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Government Printing Office","publisherLocation":"Washington, DC","doi":"10.3133/70047724","usgsCitation":"Ripple, C., Rubin, J., and Van Hylckama, T.E., 1970, Estimating steady-state evaporation rates from bare soils under conditions of high water table: Open-File Report, vii, 62 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/70047724.","productDescription":"vii, 62 p.","numberOfPages":"73","costCenters":[{"id":629,"text":"Water Resources Division","active":false,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":276823,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/unnumbered/70047724/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":279947,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/unnumbered/70047724/report.pdf"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"52148fe2e4b06d85e08fb4ee","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Ripple, C.D.","contributorId":11586,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Ripple","given":"C.D.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":482826,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Rubin, J.","contributorId":26433,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Rubin","given":"J.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":482827,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Van Hylckama, T.
