The survey was intended to define more precisely a positive magnetic anomaly that had been found from an earlier survey (Ratte and others, 1969, Pl. 1 and p. E30-31) by reducing the original flight elevation from 10,500 feet to 8,000 feet and the flight line spacing from 1 mile to 1/2 mile. The results of the more detailed survey are shown in the accompanying figure (fig. 1). The anomaly in question lies in the center of the map and has a peak value of 915 gammas and a closure of approximately 460 gammas. On the earlier map (Ratte and others, op. cit.) the closure is approximately 80 gammas.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr6984","usgsCitation":"Eaton, G.P., and Ratte, J.C., 1970, Significance of an aeromagnetic anomaly in the southwestern part of the Blue Range primitive area, Arizona-New Mexico: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 69-84, Report: 5 p.; 1 Plate: 12.16 x 17.80 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr6984.","productDescription":"Report: 5 p.; 1 Plate: 12.16 x 17.80 inches","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":431625,"rank":4,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1969/0084/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":431624,"rank":3,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1969/0084/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":416449,"rank":2,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_8460.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":145443,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1969/0084/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Arizona, New Mexico","otherGeospatial":"Blue Range primitive area","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -109.25,\n              33.5\n            ],\n            [\n              -109.25,\n              33.352\n            ],\n            [\n              -109.375,\n              33.352\n            ],\n            [\n              -109.375,\n              33.5\n            ],\n            [\n              -109.25,\n              33.5\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49fae4b07f02db5f3cf2","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Eaton, Gordon P.","contributorId":67077,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Eaton","given":"Gordon","email":"","middleInitial":"P.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":167836,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Ratte, James Clifford","contributorId":9268,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Ratte","given":"James","email":"","middleInitial":"Clifford","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":167835,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

This was the story of the Brandywine Plan, an attempt to organize local people for the permanent protection of the environmental amenities of their own land.

The Upper East Branch of Brandywine Creek drains a rolling basin of farms, fields, woodlands, and a sprinkling of residential areas. Because it lies at the far edge of the commuting range to the population centers of Philadelphia and Wilmington, the basin's natural beauty has barely been touched by the blight of suburban sprawl. The waters of its streams are clear; its ample woodlands and fields are filled with wildlife. Driving slowly through the basin's winding roads and across its narrow bridges evokes the feeling of a pastoral painting, of the ideal landscape of rural eastern America.

For two years, I had the privilege of working closely with a group preparing a land plan for the Brandywine area. The plan was designed to offer the inhabitants of the basin a feasible way to preserve forever the natural qualities of their region from the inevitable wave of urbanization. A report in Science magazine called it the perfect plan that failed.
","language":"English","publisher":"American Museum of Natural History","usgsCitation":"Leopold, L.B., 1970, Let's Sing 'Auld Lang Syne' for the Upper Brandywine: Or, to continue with Burns, how the best laid environmental schemes of men \"gang aft a-gley\" : Natural History, v. 79, p. 5-15.","productDescription":"11 p.","startPage":"5","endPage":"15","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":338684,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"79","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"58dcc823e4b02ff32c685768","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Leopold, Luna Bergere","contributorId":93884,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Leopold","given":"Luna","email":"","middleInitial":"Bergere","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":687153,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Seeds, copepods and cladocerans were seldom or never eaten.
","language":"English","publisher":"Arctic Institute of North America","doi":"10.14430/arctic3152","usgsCitation":"Bartonek, J., and Murdy, H.W., 1970, Summer foods of lesser scaup in subarctic taiga: Arctic, v. 23, no. 1, p. 35-44, https://doi.org/10.14430/arctic3152.","productDescription":"10 p.","startPage":"35","endPage":"44","costCenters":[{"id":480,"text":"Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":480679,"rank":2,"type":{"id":40,"text":"Open Access Publisher Index Page"},"url":"https://doi.org/10.14430/arctic3152","text":"Publisher Index Page"},{"id":133827,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"Canada","state":"Northwest Territories","otherGeospatial":"Great Slave Lake","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -116.47705078125,\n              60.951776809566965\n            ],\n            [\n              -115.13671875,\n              60.855613316239335\n            ],\n            [\n              -114.19189453125,\n              60.930432202923335\n            ],\n            [\n              -113.73046875,\n              61.0689165862774\n            ],\n            [\n              -113.75244140624999,\n              61.28079281179158\n            ],\n            [\n              -113.3349609375,\n              61.386197865704695\n            ],\n            [\n              -112.34619140625,\n              61.53316997618226\n            ],\n            [\n              -111.4013671875,\n              62.09360043551698\n            ],\n            [\n              -109.09423828125,\n              62.58322502941986\n            ],\n            [\n              -108.96240234375,\n              62.85514553774182\n            ],\n            [\n              -110.50048828124999,\n              62.96521201337507\n            ],\n            [\n              -111.42333984375,\n              62.81501879409271\n            ],\n            [\n              -111.86279296875,\n              62.3190027860309\n            ],\n            [\n              -113.48876953125,\n              62.03183469254472\n            ],\n            [\n              -114.3017578125,\n              62.3394105775287\n            ],\n            [\n              -114.85107421875,\n              62.52245786661599\n            ],\n            [\n              -115.55419921875,\n              62.60345318745799\n            ],\n            [\n              -115.86181640625001,\n              62.83508901142283\n            ],\n            [\n              -116.38916015624999,\n              63.09475846224108\n            ],\n            [\n              -116.27929687499999,\n              62.784887782399174\n            ],\n            [\n              -115.31249999999999,\n              62.24746627771428\n            ],\n            [\n              -114.49951171875,\n              61.95961583829658\n            ],\n            [\n              -114.85107421875,\n              61.7419302246182\n            ],\n            [\n              -115.1806640625,\n              61.75233128411639\n            ],\n            [\n              -115.6640625,\n              61.689872200460016\n            ],\n            [\n              -115.8837890625,\n              61.270232790000634\n            ],\n            [\n              -116.74072265625,\n              61.19621314083867\n            ],\n            [\n              -116.47705078125,\n              60.951776809566965\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"23","issue":"1","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"1970-01-01","publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b01e4b07f02db698703","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Bartonek, James C.","contributorId":38085,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Bartonek","given":"James C.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":311829,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Murdy, H. Some differences in radiance are attributed to differences in snow cover. The highest apparent temperature is at a snow-free area on the west flank of the summit cone, several hundred feet below the west crater rim. An anomaly at this site was recorded on both infrared surveys, but no prior reports of thermal activity here have been made by ground parties. Other anomalous thermal zones at the summit are on the northern quadrants of both crater rims.

A very small, low-temperature fumarole reported on Mount Adams was not detected, nor were any other thermal manifestations recorded.

One anomaly consisting of a close-spaced cluster of thermal spots was detected at The Boot on Mount St. Helens and corresponds to a known fumarole area.

The only thermal feature seen on Mount Shasta is near the summit at a thermal spring that has been observed by many climbers.

Two anomalies were found on the north flank of Lassen Peak. Concern has been expressed in the United States because mercurials have been used extensively in industry and as prophylactic and therapeutic agents in fish hatcheries. Rucker and Amend (1969) showed that yearling rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri) and chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) exposed to mercurials accumulated excessive amounts of mercury in many tissues. Further, Rucker and Amend (1969) concluded that wild fish that ate mercury-contaminated fish also could contain high mercury levels. Although mercury was eliminated from most tissues within several months, substantial levels remained in the kidney for more than 33 weeks after the last exposure. Since high levels of mercury can be retained in the kidney for an undetermined time, it is possible that returning adult salmon exposed to mercurials as juveniles could constitute a potential hazard to public health. The purpose of this study was to determine whether such fish contained high residual levels of mercury.
","language":"English","publisher":"Taylor & Francis","doi":"10.1577/1548-8640(1970)32[192:ROMBS]2.0.CO;2","usgsCitation":"Amend, D.F., 1970, Retention of mercury by salmon: Progressive Fish-Culturist, v. 32, no. 4, p. 192-194, https://doi.org/10.1577/1548-8640(1970)32[192:ROMBS]2.0.CO;2.","productDescription":"3 p.","startPage":"192","endPage":"194","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":654,"text":"Western Fisheries Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":313968,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"32","issue":"4","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"568e4927e4b0e7a44bc41a50","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Amend, Donald F.","contributorId":106543,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Amend","given":"Donald","email":"","middleInitial":"F.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":587861,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Bullet-shaped virus particles measuring 158 × 90 mμ were observed in the hematopoietic tissues of the anterior kidney and spleen. Virus particles were also observed in the outer connective tissues of the pancreas or pyloric caeca, or both. No virus was found in the intestine or liver. The healthy appearance of erythrocytes, reticular cells, and endothelial cells in necrotic areas of the spleen and anterior kidney, and the absence of lymphocytes in these areas, suggested that lymphocytes might be one source of the virus.
","language":"English","publisher":"NRC Research Press","doi":"10.1139/f70-163","usgsCitation":"Amend, D.F., and Chambers, V.C., 1970, Morphology of certain viruses of Salmonid fishes. An approach, useful for correcting this bias when sampling immotile populations using transects of a fixed width, is presented. The method assumes that a searcher's ability to find objects near the center of the transect is nearly perfect. The method utilizes a mathematical equation, estimated from the data, to represent the searcher's inability to find all objects at increasing distances from the center of the transect. An example of the analysis of data, formation of the equation, and application is presented using waterfowl nesting data collected in Colorado.","language":"English","publisher":"Wiley","doi":"10.2307/3799501","usgsCitation":"Anderson, D., and Pospahala, R., 1970, Correction of bias in belt transect studies of immotile objects: Umatilla is 3.2 kilometers below McNary Dam. Accumulations of radionuclides in the Pasco to Umatilla reach estimated by the two methods agree within about 8%. In October 1965 approximately 16,000 curies of gamma emitting radionuclides were resident in bed sediments of the river between the Hanford reactors and McNary Dam. Concentrations and accumulations of chromium-51, zinc-65, cobalt-60, manganese-54, and scandium-46 generally are much higher near McNary Dam than they are in the vicinity of the reactors. Because the Bear River flows through three States - Utah, Wyoming, and Idaho - water-quality programs have been confined for the most part within State boundaries. In 1967, the U.S. Geological Survey, as a part of its cooperative program with the Utah Department of Natural Resources, Division of Water Rights, designed a reconnaissance to obtain needed water-quality information for the entire basin. This report presents the results of the data-collection phase of the reconnaissance. Also included in this report are data collected intermittently or periodically prior to the reconnaissance by the U.S. Geological Survey, the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, and the Federal Water Pollution Control Administration. An interpretive report is being prepared and will be published by the U.S. Geological Survey as a Hydrologic Atlas.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Salt Lake City, UT","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with The Utah Department of Natural Resources, Division of Water Rights","usgsCitation":"Waddell, K., 1970, Quality of surface water in the Bear River basin, Utah, Wyoming and Idaho: Utah Basic-Data Release 18, 65 p.","productDescription":"65 p.","numberOfPages":"73","costCenters":[{"id":610,"text":"Utah Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":345828,"rank":2,"type":{"id":22,"text":"Related Work"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/publication/ha417","text":"Interpretive Report: ","linkHelpText":"Hydrologic Atlas 417"},{"id":345829,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":345827,"rank":1,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://www.waterrights.utah.gov/cgi-bin/docview.exe?Folder=TP21-1-360&Title=Basic+Data+Report+18"}],"country":"United States","state":"Idaho, Utah, Wyoming","otherGeospatial":"Bear River basin","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"59bf899de4b091459a5e088f","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Waddell, K.M.","contributorId":59009,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Waddell","given":"K.M.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":710674,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}
