The extreme decline in production was attributed primarily to a succession of weak year-classes, caused by habitat deterioration (increased water temperatures, enrichment, and pollution) in western Lake Erie. Unusually high fishing intensity and high yields of walleyes in the mid-1950's contributed to the collapse.Annual lakewide production of walleyes dropped from a record high of 15 million lb in 1956 to a record low of 717,000 lb in 1962. Canadian catches exceeded those of the United States only during the high production years of 1956–58; U.S. fishermen took 71% of the total catch in 1915–62.On the basis of the numbers of fish of the various year-classes in the fall trapnet samples at Sandusky, Ohio, in 1943–62, all but one of the 1942–52 year-classes were above average strength, and all but one of the 1953–61 year-classes were below average. Fish of the 1953–61 year-classes grew much faster than those of the 1942–52 year-classes. The strong 1948 year-class was followed by a series of progressively weaker year-classes until 1958; year-class strengths remained low through 1962.
","language":"English","publisher":"NRC Research Press","doi":"10.1139/f70-169","usgsCitation":"Parsons, J.W., 1970, Walleye fishery of Lake Erie in 1943-62 with emphasis on contributions of the 1942-61 year-classes: Journal of the Fisheries Research Board of Canada, v. 27, no. 8, p. 1475-1489, https://doi.org/10.1139/f70-169.","productDescription":"15 p.","startPage":"1475","endPage":"1489","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":324,"text":"Great Lakes Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":130318,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"27","issue":"8","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a0de4b07f02db5fd50f","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Parsons, John W.","contributorId":21899,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Parsons","given":"John","email":"","middleInitial":"W.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":308604,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The two insecticides found in all Great Lakes fish have been DDT (DDT, DDD, DDE) and dieldrin. Fish from Lake Michigan contain from 2 to 7 times as much of these insecticides as those from the other Great Lakes. Insecticide levels calculated on a whole-fish basis show a marked difference from species to species. Within a species there is also an increase in DDT and dieldrin levels with an increase in size. If these insecticide levels are, however, calculated as ppm of insecticide in the extractable fish oil, the differences in concentration between species and the differences between size groups becomes considerably less. Laboratory experiments indicate that fish can build up concentrations of DDT and dieldrin at the parts-per-million level from parts-per-trillion concentrations in the water.","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"Pesticides Monitoring Journal","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","collaboration":"Out-of-print","usgsCitation":"Reinert, R.E., 1970, Pesticide concentrations in Great Lakes fish: Pesticides Monitoring Journal, v. 3, no. 4, p. 233-240.","productDescription":"p. 233-240","startPage":"233","endPage":"240","numberOfPages":"7","costCenters":[{"id":324,"text":"Great Lakes Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":130476,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":269747,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://biodiversitylibrary.org/page/26094207"}],"volume":"3","issue":"4","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ae0e4b07f02db68838e","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Reinert, Robert E.","contributorId":101214,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Reinert","given":"Robert","email":"","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":308382,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

It entered Lake Ontario in abundance via the Erie Canal during the 1860's when major piscivores were declining, and became the dominant species in the lake during the 1870's. The alewife subsequently spread throughout the Great Lakes and became the dominant species in Lakes Huron and Michigan as major piscivores declined. In lakes where it became extremely abundant, the shallow-water planktivores declined in the first decade after alewife establishment, the minor piscivores increased then declined in the second decade, and the deep-water planktivores declined in the third decade. The consequence has been a general reduction in fishery productivity. Rehabilitation will require extreme reduction of the alewife, and restoration of an interacting complex of deep- and shallow-water forage species, and minor and major piscivores, either by reestablishing species affected by the alewife, or by the introduction of new species that can thrive under the new ecological conditions of the lakes.
","language":"English","publisher":"Taylor & Francis","doi":"10.1577/1548-8659(1970)99<754:SIOTAI>2.0.CO;2","usgsCitation":"Smith, S.H., 1970, Species interactions of the alewife in the Great Lakes: Transactions of the American Fisheries Society, v. 99, no. 4, p. 754-765, https://doi.org/10.1577/1548-8659(1970)99<754:SIOTAI>2.0.CO;2.","productDescription":"12 p.","startPage":"754","endPage":"765","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":324,"text":"Great Lakes Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":131719,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"99","issue":"4","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49e4e4b07f02db5e609b","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Smith, Stanford H.","contributorId":86711,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Smith","given":"Stanford","email":"","middleInitial":"H.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":308488,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Synchrony of development was observed among stages of viable hybrids and their controls but lethal hybrids generally did not maintain such synchrony. Occasionally, different curves are used for different length intervals of fish. Present understanding of the basic principles of research on the body-scale relation is good but certain problems still await clear solution.\nNomographic devices for the calculation of growth appeared early. Many of these unnecessarily had a moving part. The simplest nomograph yet developed and one that can be adapted to any kind of body-scale relation was described by Carlander and Smith. Forms that decline sharply were the largest cladocerans (Leptodora kindtii, Daphnia galeata, and D. retrocurva), the largest calanoid copepods (Limnocalanus macrurus, Epischura lacustris, and Diaptomus sicilis), and the largest cyclopoid copepod (Mesocyclops edax). Two of these, D. galeata and M. edax (both abundant in 1954), became extremely rare. Certain medium-sized or small species increased in numbers: Daphnia longiremis, Holopedium gibberum, Polyphemus pediculus, Bosmina longirostris, Bosmina coregoni, Ceriodaphnia sp., Cyclops bicuspidatus, Cyclops vernalis, and Diaptomus ashlandi. Evidence is strong that the changes were due to selective predation by alewives. The alewife was uncommon in southeastern Lake Michigan in 1954 but had increased to enormous proportions by 1966; there was a massive dieoff in spring 1967, and abundance remained relatively low in 1968. The composition of zooplankton populations in 1968 generally had shifted back toward that of 1954, although D. galeata and M. edax remained rare. The average size, and size at onset of maturity, of D. retrocurva decreased noticeably between 1954 and 1966 but increased between 1966 and 1968.
","language":"English","publisher":"Wiley","doi":"10.4319/lo.1970.15.4.0556","usgsCitation":"Wells, L., 1970, Effects of alewife predation on zooplankton populations in Lake Michigan: Limnology and Oceanography, v. 15, no. 4, p. 556-565, https://doi.org/10.4319/lo.1970.15.4.0556.","productDescription":"10 p.","startPage":"556","endPage":"565","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":324,"text":"Great Lakes Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":480290,"rank":1,"type":{"id":40,"text":"Open Access Publisher Index Page"},"url":"https://doi.org/10.4319/lo.1970.15.4.0556","text":"Publisher Index Page"},{"id":132983,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"15","issue":"4","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2003-12-22","publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ad8e4b07f02db684761","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Wells, LaRue","contributorId":75476,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Wells","given":"LaRue","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":308520,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The percentages of females increased from 72% of the bloaters samples in 1928-32 to 95% in 1963, and ranged from 94 to 97% in 1964-69. The unusual predominance of females was established at an early age, unquestionably before age III. Bloaters grew faster in southeastern Lake Michigan in 1960-69 than in 1954 and earlier, and were less abundant there in 1966-69 than in 1962-65. The average age of female bloaters from trawls increased from 3.5 years in 1964 to 6.0 years in 1969. The increase in average age followed a heavy drop in fishing intensity and was accompanied by a decline in recruitment. The percentage representation of age-III bloaters, for example, decreased from 62.4% in 1964 to 2.5% in 1969. The changes in biological characteristics of the bloater may partly be symptoms of a fish population that is poorly adjusted to the changing ecology of Lake Michigan.","largerWorkType":{"id":4,"text":"Book"},"largerWorkTitle":"Biology of coregonid fishes","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":4,"text":"Other Government Series"},"language":"English","publisher":"Univ of Manitoba Press","publisherLocation":"Winnipeg, Canada","usgsCitation":"Brown, E.H., 1970, Extreme female predominance in the bloater (Coregonus hoyi) of Lake Michigan in the 1960's, chap. of Biology of coregonid fishes, p. 501-514.","productDescription":"p. 501-514","startPage":"501","endPage":"514","costCenters":[{"id":324,"text":"Great Lakes Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":126954,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a06e4b07f02db5f89b8","contributors":{"editors":[{"text":"Lindsey, C.C.","contributorId":112003,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Lindsey","given":"C.C.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":504058,"contributorType":{"id":2,"text":"Editors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Woods, C.S.","contributorId":111533,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Woods","given":"C.S.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":504057,"contributorType":{"id":2,"text":"Editors"},"rank":2}],"authors":[{"text":"Brown, Edward H. Some fishes of former economic importance have become commercially extinct. Several species apparently have been extirpated, especially in the tributaries. It is believed that further changes in the abundance of other species will occur in the near future. This publication consolidates the confirmed records of fish species for Lake Erie and its tributaries. One hundred and thirty-eight species of fishes are listed and, where appropriate, brief comments on present and past distribution and abundance and economic status are given. Selected references are listed as additional sources of information for each species.","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"Ohio Journal of Science","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","publisher":"Ohio Academy of Science","collaboration":"Out-of-print","usgsCitation":"Van Meter, H.D., and Trautman, M.B., 1970, An annotated list of the fishes of Lake Erie and its tributary waters exclusive of the Detroit River: Ohio Journal of Science, v. 70, no. 2, p. 65-78.","productDescription":"14 p.","startPage":"65","endPage":"78","numberOfPages":"14","costCenters":[{"id":324,"text":"Great Lakes Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":131761,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":266963,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://hdl.handle.net/1811/5521"}],"volume":"70","issue":"2","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4adae4b07f02db6857b2","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Van Meter, Harry D.","contributorId":36887,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Van Meter","given":"Harry","email":"","middleInitial":"D.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":308572,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Trautman, Milton B.","contributorId":19120,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Trautman","given":"Milton","email":"","middleInitial":"B.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":308571,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}
