Occasionally, different curves are used for different length intervals of fish. Present understanding of the basic principles of research on the body-scale relation is good but certain problems still await clear solution.\nNomographic devices for the calculation of growth appeared early. Many of these unnecessarily had a moving part. The simplest nomograph yet developed and one that can be adapted to any kind of body-scale relation was described by Carlander and Smith. The extreme decline in production was attributed primarily to a succession of weak year-classes, caused by habitat deterioration (increased water temperatures, enrichment, and pollution) in western Lake Erie. Unusually high fishing intensity and high yields of walleyes in the mid-1950's contributed to the collapse.Annual lakewide production of walleyes dropped from a record high of 15 million lb in 1956 to a record low of 717,000 lb in 1962. Canadian catches exceeded those of the United States only during the high production years of 1956–58; U.S. fishermen took 71% of the total catch in 1915–62.On the basis of the numbers of fish of the various year-classes in the fall trapnet samples at Sandusky, Ohio, in 1943–62, all but one of the 1942–52 year-classes were above average strength, and all but one of the 1953–61 year-classes were below average. Fish of the 1953–61 year-classes grew much faster than those of the 1942–52 year-classes. The two insecticides found in all Great Lakes fish have been DDT (DDT, DDD, DDE) and dieldrin. Fish from Lake Michigan contain from 2 to 7 times as much of these insecticides as those from the other Great Lakes. Insecticide levels calculated on a whole-fish basis show a marked difference from species to species. Within a species there is also an increase in DDT and dieldrin levels with an increase in size. If these insecticide levels are, however, calculated as ppm of insecticide in the extractable fish oil, the differences in concentration between species and the differences between size groups becomes considerably less. Laboratory experiments indicate that fish can build up concentrations of DDT and dieldrin at the parts-per-million level from parts-per-trillion concentrations in the water.","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"Pesticides Monitoring Journal","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","collaboration":"Out-of-print","usgsCitation":"Reinert, R.E., 1970, Pesticide concentrations in Great Lakes fish: Pesticides Monitoring Journal, v. 3, no. 4, p. 233-240.","productDescription":"p. 233-240","startPage":"233","endPage":"240","numberOfPages":"7","costCenters":[{"id":324,"text":"Great Lakes Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":130476,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":269747,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://biodiversitylibrary.org/page/26094207"}],"volume":"3","issue":"4","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ae0e4b07f02db68838e","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Reinert, Robert E.","contributorId":101214,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Reinert","given":"Robert","email":"","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":308382,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The chemical is rapidly toxic to many species. Sea lampreys, bowfin, and channel catfish are the most sensitive species. Carp are more sensitive than trouts or sunfishes. Use of 33NCS in selective control of freshwater fishes or sea lampreys requires precise control because its toxicity is strongly influenced by variations in water quality.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Bureau of Sport Fisheries and Wildlife","collaboration":"Out-of-print","usgsCitation":"Marking, L.L., King, E.L., Walker, C.R., and Howell, J.H., 1970, Toxicity of 33NCS (3'-chloro-3-nitrosalicylanilide) to freshwater fish and sea lampreys: Investigations in Fish Control 38, 16 p. ; 26 cm.","productDescription":"16 p. ; 26 cm","startPage":"0","endPage":"16","numberOfPages":"16","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":164882,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/ifc/036/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":91309,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/ifc/036/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a4ee4b07f02db6280ec","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Marking, Leif L.","contributorId":52239,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Marking","given":"Leif","email":"","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":217343,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"King, Everett L.","contributorId":54922,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"King","given":"Everett","email":"","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":217344,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Walker, Charles R.","contributorId":10469,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Walker","given":"Charles","email":"","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":217341,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Howell, John H.","contributorId":39720,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Howell","given":"John","email":"","middleInitial":"H.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":217342,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4}]}}

Bullet-shaped virus particles measuring 158 × 90 mμ were observed in the hematopoietic tissues of the anterior kidney and spleen. Virus particles were also observed in the outer connective tissues of the pancreas or pyloric caeca, or both. No virus was found in the intestine or liver. The healthy appearance of erythrocytes, reticular cells, and endothelial cells in necrotic areas of the spleen and anterior kidney, and the absence of lymphocytes in these areas, suggested that lymphocytes might be one source of the virus.
","language":"English","publisher":"NRC Research Press","doi":"10.1139/f70-163","usgsCitation":"Amend, D.F., and Chambers, V.C., 1970, Morphology of certain viruses of Salmonid fishes. The Taunton River basin is separated from the basins of short streams draining to the coast by low divides on the east, south, and southwest. On the west and north, the basin is bordered by the Ten Mile, Charles, Neponset, and Weymouth River basins. Principal tributaries of the lower Taunton River are Segreganset, Threemile, Mill, Assonet, Nemasket, and Winnetuxet Rivers. The upper part of the basin is drained by the Canoe, Wading, and Rumford Rivers which empty into Mill and Threemile Rivers and by the Matfield and Town Rivers which unite to form the Taunton River.
\n
This report presents in tabular form selected records of wells, test wells, and borings collected during a study of the basin from 1966 to 1968 in cooperation with the Massachusetts Water Resources Commission, and during earlier studies. This report is released in order to make available to the public and to local, state, and federal agencies basic ground-water information that may aid in planning water-resources development. The gas chromatogram of the acylated and esterified derivatives of the hydrolyzate was similar to that obtained for the Pueblito de Allende meteorite. There were no detectable amounts of extractable high-molecular-weight alkanes, aromatic hydrocarbons, isoprenoid hydrocarbons, normal alkanes, fatty acids, amino acids, sugars, or nucleic acid bases. Traces of porphyrins were found, perhaps arising from rocket exhaust materials.
","language":"English","publisher":"American Association for the Advancement of Umatilla is 3.2 kilometers below McNary Dam. Accumulations of radionuclides in the Pasco to Umatilla reach estimated by the two methods agree within about 8%. In October 1965 approximately 16,000 curies of gamma emitting radionuclides were resident in bed sediments of the river between the Hanford reactors and McNary Dam. Concentrations and accumulations of chromium-51, zinc-65, cobalt-60, manganese-54, and scandium-46 generally are much higher near McNary Dam than they are in the vicinity of the reactors. These changes are caused by an increase downstream from the reactors in the proportion of the bed sediment that is fine grained and the proportions of the transported zinc, cobalt, manganese, and scandium radionuclides associated with sediment particles.
","language":"English","publisher":"American Geophysical Union","doi":"10.1029/WR006i001p00130","usgsCitation":"Nelson, J.L., and Haushild, W., 1970, Accumulation of radionuclides in bed sediments of the Columbia River between Hanford reactors and McNary Dam: Water Resources Research, v. 6, no. 1, p. 130-137, https://doi.org/10.1029/WR006i001p00130.","productDescription":"8 p.","startPage":"130","endPage":"137","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":622,"text":"Washington Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":321895,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Oregon, Washington","city":"Pasco, Umatilla","otherGeospatial":"Columbia River, McNary Dam","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -119.48593139648438,\n              45.857499316676666\n            ],\n            [\n              -118.82263183593749,\n              45.857499316676666\n            ],\n            [\n              -118.82263183593749,\n              46.27673288302042\n            ],\n            [\n              -119.48593139648438,\n              46.27673288302042\n            ],\n            [\n              -119.48593139648438,\n              45.857499316676666\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"6","issue":"1","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2010-07-09","publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"574eb5ade4b0ee97d51a838b","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Nelson, Jack L.","contributorId":41671,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Nelson","given":"Jack","email":"","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":630906,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Haushild, W.L.","contributorId":48953,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Haushild","given":"W.L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":630907,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Results demonstrate that in the case of the water-coated quartz, a loss in spectral contrast of the quartz emission occurs at the principal restrahlen wavelengths of 8.5, 9.0, and 12.5 µ but is most pronounced at 12.5 µ. In the case of pyrophyllite-coated quartzite, additional spectral features appear between 8.0 and 10.0 µ as the exposure of quartzite through the pyrophyllite coating is increased. Addition of the pure quartzite and pyrophyllite spectra, weighted by exposed area, is shown to satisfactorily describe the composite spectra.
","language":"English","publisher":"American Geophysical Union","publisherLocation":"Richmond, VA","doi":"10.1029/JB075i002p00480","usgsCitation":"Watson, R.D., 1970, Surface coating effects in remote sensing measurements: Journal of Geophysical Research, v. 75, no. 2, p. 480-484, https://doi.org/10.1029/JB075i002p00480.","productDescription":"5 p.","startPage":"480","endPage":"484","numberOfPages":"5","costCenters":[{"id":222,"text":"Earth Resources Observation and Science (EROS) Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":288517,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":288516,"type":{"id":10,"text":"Digital Object Identifier"},"url":"https://dx.doi.org/10.1029/JB075i002p00480"}],"volume":"75","issue":"2","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2012-09-20","publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"539acc17e4b0e83db6d09007","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Watson, Robert D.","contributorId":62605,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Watson","given":"Robert","email":"","middleInitial":"D.","affiliations":[{"id":223,"text":"Earth Resources Observation and Science (EROS) Center (Geography)","active":false,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":494652,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}
