A limited amount of testing was also done with wild mallards. Single dosages were administered to determine the mean effective dose (ED50) and mean lethal dose (LD50), The therapeutic index, or safety factor (LD50/ED50), and palatability were also established. Optimum dosage rates of compounds administered orally on baits were not considered in this phase of the study. Compounds were-administered by intubation and calculated in terms of mg/kg. All except one compound produced narcosis within 5 minutes at the effective dose rate.Immobilization periods for the seven compounds ranged from 7-24 minutes, and recovery periods from 1.0-6.5 hours. Such wide variations in actions of the compounds can be attributed to a compound's rate of absorption, the ease with which it passes the blood-brain barrier, its solubility in tissues, and its rate of metabolism in the liver and kidneys. Length of both the immobilization and recovery periods were extended when dosages were increased. There was no delayed mortality among survivors with any of the seven compounds at either the ED50 or LD50. Females were generally more sensitive to the anesthetizing agents than males. The ED50 for wild mallards was substantially higher than that for the experimental game-farm birds for the two compounds on which this was tested.Tribromoethanol (Avertin of Winthrop Laboratories) satisfied all test criteria an Phase I and will be subjected to more intensive investigation in ensuing tests. Thiopental sodium (Pentothal of Amdal Company) and pentobarbital sodium (Nembutal of Abbott Laboratories) were judged to be marginal. Although their therapeutic indexes were good (5.00), recovery periods were prolonged and toxic convulsions occurred at medium to high dose rates as the LD50 was approached.Alpha-chloralose (Fisher Scientific) proved least promising of the seven compounds, mainly because of its unacceptable therapeutic index (2.25) and because it possesses prolonged induction and recovery periods. Two new experimental drugs, methoxymol and metomidate (Pitman-Moore), appeared effective and safe when administered by intubation but produced a taste aversion when added to bait. Rejection because of taste was also a problem with secobarbital (Seconal of Elanco Products), and its therapeutic index of 2.75 was unacceptable. Monitoring of heart and respiratory rates, and body temperature by telemetry showed promise as a technique for determining physiological response to drug action.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service","publisherLocation":"Jamestown, ND","usgsCitation":"Cline, D., 1970, Testing of selected pharmacological agents for capturing waterfowl [Annual Progress Report], 26 pp.","productDescription":"26 pp.","costCenters":[{"id":480,"text":"Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":127780,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ad8e4b07f02db68477b","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Cline, D.R.","contributorId":45655,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Cline","given":"D.R.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":297902,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Structurally the county is in the northern part of the Iowan Basin, and the sedimentary units of Cambrian through Devonian age dip southward at 9 to 14 feet per mile. Three major glacial advances, the Nebraskan, Kansan, and Wisconsin, covered all or part of the county during the Pleistocene Epoch and left behind glacial drift consisting of 0 to 125 feet of till and related outwash deposits. De posits of Holocene age, aside from surficial soil, are thin and scattered.

Ground water occurs in the sedimentary units of Cambrian through Mississippian age and in the glacial drift and outwash deposits of Quaternary age. The chief aquifers, in ascending order, are the deep Cambrian sandstones, Jordan aquifer, St. Peter Sandstone, Devonian and Mississippian limestones and dolomites, and the Pleistocene glacial drift and related interglacial deposits. Units between the St. Peter Sandstone and the Devonian limestones, the Platteville, Decorah, Galena, and Maquoketa Formations, are of low permeability and are considered to be an aquiclude in comparison to the overlying and under lying units.

The deep Cambrian sandstones will yield about 60 gpm (gallons per minute) to an individual well; the Jordan aquifer about 1,200 gpm; the St. Peter Sandstone 30 to 200 gpm; the Devonian limestones and dolomites 120 to 200 gpm; and the glacial outwash or shallow bedrock generally will yield 10 gpm or more. The Jordan aquifer supplies large quantities of water for municipal and industrial use at Mason City. Pumping tests on wells tapping the Jordan in that area show that the aquifer has a transmissibility of about 35,000 gallons per day per foot and a storage coefficient of 2 x 10-4 Pumping in the Mason City area from 1912 to 1969 has produced about 200 feet of draw down in the areas of maximum withdrawal.

Ground water in Cerro Gordo County is of suitable chemical quality for domestic, industrial, or municipal use. The total dis solved solids ranges from 152 mg/l (milligrams per liter) in water from the shallow bedrock to 885 mg/l in water from the deep Cambrian sandstones. Water from the Jordan, which is the most productive aquifer in the county, generally contains less than 500 mg/l dissolved solids.

Ground water is the major source of water supplies throughout Cerro Gordo County. The majority of wells in the county are used for domestic and stock supplies, but the largest withdrawals of water are for municipal and industrial supplies. Municipal pumpage in the county in 1968 was about 1.5 billion gallons; industrial pumpage was about 1.8 billion gallons and most of the water was obtained from the Jordan aquifer. If future development of water from the Jordan aquifer is to be to the best economical advantage, careful consideration should be given to the location, capacity, and pumping schedules of proposed wells and nearby existing wells so that local overdevelopment or excessive interference do not occur.
","language":"English","publisher":"State of Iowa","publisherLocation":"Des Moines, IA","usgsCitation":"Hershey, H., Wahl, K., and Steinhilber, W.L., 1970, Geology and ground-water resources of Cerro Gordo County, Iowa: Water Supply Bulletin 9, iv, 75 p.","productDescription":"iv, 75 p.","numberOfPages":"81","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":351,"text":"Iowa Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":493176,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/unnumbered/70174097/IGS_wsb_9.pdf","text":"Report","size":"7.75 MB","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":324472,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Iowa","county":"Cerro Gordo County","geographicExtents":"{\"type\":\"FeatureCollection\",\"features\":[{\"type\":\"Feature\",\"geometry\":{\"type\":\"Polygon\",\"coordinates\":[[[-93.0242,43.2564],[-93.0245,43.2122],[-93.0242,43.1695],[-93.0241,43.0826],[-93.0241,42.9939],[-93.026,42.9071],[-93.1455,42.9075],[-93.2637,42.9073],[-93.3813,42.9074],[-93.4989,42.9075],[-93.4989,42.9934],[-93.4983,43.0821],[-93.4977,43.1699],[-93.4977,43.2568],[-93.3795,43.2576],[-93.2613,43.2566],[-93.1431,43.2568],[-93.0242,43.2564]]]},\"properties\":{\"name\":\"Cerro Gordo\",\"state\":\"IA\"}}]}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"57724e30e4b07657d1a8197f","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Hershey, H.G.","contributorId":88814,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Hershey","given":"H.G.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":640875,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Wahl, K.D.","contributorId":167129,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Wahl","given":"K.D.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":640876,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Steinhilber, W. The surveys were made with an airborne scanner system, utilizing radiation in the 4.5–5.5 μm wavelength band.

Supplementary ground geological studies were made in the Reykjanes and Torfajökull thermal areas to interpret features depicted on the infrared imagery and to relate zones of high heat flux to tectonic structure. In the Reykjanes area in southwestern Iceland a shallow ground temperature map was prepared for temperatures at a depth of 0.5 meters; comparison of this map with the infrared imagery reveals some striking similarities.

It appears that aerial infrared surveys outline the surface thermal patterns of high-temperature areas and aid in relating these patterns to possible geological structures controlling the upflow of hot water. Amplitude-slicing techniques applied to the magnetically taped airborne scanner data permit an estimate to be made of the natural heat output on the basis of size of area and specific radiance.

In addition to their value in preliminary studies of high-temperature areas, infrared surveys conducted at regular intervals over thermal area under exploitation can provide valuable data on changes that occur in surface manifestations with time.
","language":"English","publisher":"Elsevier","doi":"10.1016/0375-6505(70)90037-4","usgsCitation":"Pálmason, G., Friedman, J.D., Williams, R.S., Jonsson, J., and Saemundsson, K., 1970, Aerial infrared surveys of Reykjanes and Torfajökull thermal areas, Iceland, with a section on cost of exploration surveys: Geothermics, v. 2, no. 1, p. 399-412, https://doi.org/10.1016/0375-6505(70)90037-4.","productDescription":"14 p.","startPage":"399","endPage":"412","costCenters":[{"id":222,"text":"Earth Resources Observation and Science (EROS) Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":336225,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"Iceland","otherGeospatial":"Reykjanes thermal area, Torfajökull thermal area","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -22.8955078125,\n              63.77763207252133\n            ],\n            [\n              -20.994873046875,\n              63.77763207252133\n            ],\n            [\n              -20.994873046875,\n              64.33039136366138\n            ],\n            [\n              -22.8955078125,\n              64.33039136366138\n            ],\n            [\n              -22.8955078125,\n              63.77763207252133\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    },\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -20.093994140624996,\n              63.68524808030715\n            ],\n            [\n              -18.610839843749996,\n              63.68524808030715\n            ],\n            [\n              -18.610839843749996,\n              64.22549260465593\n            ],\n            [\n              -20.093994140624996,\n              64.22549260465593\n            ],\n            [\n              -20.093994140624996,\n              63.68524808030715\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    },\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -17.4462890625,\n              64.50591486519582\n            ],\n            [\n              -15.831298828124998,\n              64.50591486519582\n            ],\n            [\n              -15.831298828124998,\n              65.3072400901087\n            ],\n            [\n              -17.4462890625,\n              65.3072400901087\n            ],\n            [\n              -17.4462890625,\n              64.50591486519582\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    },\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -17.46826171875,\n              65.44913291147593\n            ],\n            [\n              -15.93017578125,\n              65.44913291147593\n            ],\n            [\n              -15.93017578125,\n              66.24031184756058\n            ],\n            [\n              -17.46826171875,\n              66.24031184756058\n            ],\n            [\n              -17.46826171875,\n              65.44913291147593\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"2","issue":"1","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"58b1545ce4b01ccd54fc5f00","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Pálmason, G.","contributorId":182525,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Pálmason","given":"G.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":671707,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Friedman, J. Most females laid five clutches of eggs in 1966, but only two or three clutches in 1967. Adult survival between 1966 and 1967 was better than during the following year. The capacity for increase, rc, was estimated as 0.0327/month, and cohort generation time, Tc, as 15.32 months from the 1966-67 data.
