Pair-counts indicated a decline from 70 pairs of waterfowl in 1965 to 2 pairs in 1968. Nest success of upland nesting blue-winged teal (Anas discors) averaged 33% and mallards (Anas platyrhyncos) averaged 23%. Blue-winged teal selected nest sites closer to water than did mallards (314 feet versus 424 feet). Teal nested in ungrazed bluegrass (Poa pratensis) in preference to alfalfa (Medicago sativa) hayland. Bromegrass (Bromus inermis) was readily used by teal and mallards when it became available for nesting. Nest success of species nesting overwater was considerably higher: Redheads (Aythya americana) were 55% successful and 93% of 75 coot (Fulica americana) nests hatched. A study of dummy-nests showed nest success significantly higher on ungrazed than on grazed bluegrass. Grazing did not significantly lower total mouse populations but did change species composition because deer mice (Peromyscus maniculatus) increased as other species declined with grazing.","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"Iowa State Journal of Science","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","usgsCitation":"Krapu, G., Parsons, D., and Weller, M., 1970, Waterfowl in relation to land use and water levels on the Spring Run Area: Iowa State Journal of Science, v. 44, no. 4, p. 437-452.","productDescription":"16 p.","startPage":"437","endPage":"452","costCenters":[{"id":480,"text":"Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":133749,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -91.34994506835938,\n              41.24180361544047\n            ],\n            [\n              -91.31132125854492,\n              41.24180361544047\n            ],\n            [\n              -91.31132125854492,\n              41.27109776324752\n            ],\n            [\n              -91.34994506835938,\n              41.27109776324752\n            ],\n            [\n              -91.34994506835938,\n              41.24180361544047\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"44","issue":"4","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49dfe4b07f02db5e3bcd","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Krapu, Gary L.","contributorId":56994,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Krapu","given":"Gary L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":311808,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Parsons, D.R.","contributorId":84322,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Parsons","given":"D.R.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":311809,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Weller, M.W.","contributorId":54562,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Weller","given":"M.W.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":311807,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

The silica geothermometer gives results independent of the local mineral suite and gas partial pressures, but may be affected by dilution. Alkali ratios are strongly affected by the local mineral suite and the formation of complex ions. Carbonate-chloride ratios are strongly affected by subsurface P<sub>CO2</sub>. The relative concentration of volatiles can be very misleading in high-pressure liquid systems.</p><p>In Yellowstone National Park most thermal waters issue from hot, shallow aquifers with pressures in excess of hydrostatic by 2 to 6 bars and with large flows (the flow of hot spring water from the Park is greater than 4000 liters per second). These conditions should be ideal for the use of chemical indicators to estimate aquifer temperatures. In five drill holes aquifer temperatures were within 2°C of that predicted from the silica content of nearby hot springs; the temperature level off at a lower value than predicted in only one hole, and in four other holes drilling was terminated before the predicted aquifer temperature was reached.</p><p>The temperature-Na/K ratio relationship does not follow any published experimental or empirical curve for water-feldspar or water-clay reactions. We suspect that ion exchange reactions involving zeolites in the Yellowstone rocks result in higher Na/K ratios at given temperatures than result from feldspar or clay reactions. Comparison of SiO<sub>2</sub><span>&nbsp;</span>and Cl/(HCO<sub>3</sub><span>&nbsp;</span>+ CO<sub>3</sub>) suggest that because of higher subsurface P<sub>CO2</sub><span>&nbsp;</span>in Upper Geyser Basin a given Cl/(HCO<sub>3</sub><span>&nbsp;</span>+ CO<sub>3</sub>) ratio there means a higher temperature than in Lower Geyser Basin. No correlation was found in Yellowstone Park between the subsurface regions of highest temperature and the relative concentration of volatile components such as boron and ammonia.</p></div></div></div>","language":"English","publisher":"Elsevier","doi":"10.1016/0375-6505(70)90051-9","issn":"03756505","usgsCitation":"Fournier, R., and Truesdell, A., 1970, Chemical indicators of subsurface temperature applied to hot spring waters of Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, U.S.A.: Geothermics, v. 2, no. The two types of investigations will be fixed-feature (for mapping) and variable-feature (for surface and atmospheric changes). Two cameras with a factor-of-ten difference in resolution will be used on each spacecraft for medium- and high-resolution imagery. Mapping of 70% of the planet's surface will be provided by medium-resolution imagery. Spot coverage of about 5% of the surface will be possible with the high-resolution imagery.</p><p>The experiment's 5 Principal Investigators and 21 Co-Investigators are organized into a team. Scientific disciplines and technical task groups have been formed to provide the formulation of experiment requirements for mission planning and instrument development. A small quake and large vapor cloud on 11 June were followed 4 hours later by a remarkable volcanic ash cloud and, after another hour, by a major explosion recorded at infrasonic stations throughout the hemisphere. Seismic activity increased to a peak on 19 June, when more than 200 events per day were recorded by a seismograph 140 km away. Several hundred quakes were in the magnitude range 4.0 to 5.4 mb, but few such events were recorded after 23 June. Unusual lightning accompanied the major cloud, and, during the evening of 11 June, distant observers reported red glow and flashes from the area. Fine ash fell that night and much of the next day to distances at least 350 km from the volcano.","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"Science","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","publisher":"AAAS","publisherLocation":"Washington, D.C.","doi":"10.1126/science.169.3944.429","issn":"00368075","usgsCitation":"Simkin, T., and Howard, K.A., 1970, Caldera collapse in the Galápagos Islands, 1968: Science, v. 169, no. 3944, p. 429-437, https://doi.org/10.1126/science.169.3944.429.","productDescription":"9 p.","startPage":"429","endPage":"437","costCenters":[{"id":617,"text":"Volcano Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":219506,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":263892,"type":{"id":10,"text":"Digital Object Identifier"},"url":"https://dx.doi.org/10.1126/science.169.3944.429"}],"country":"Ecuador","otherGeospatial":"Galpagos Islands;Isla Fernandina","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -90.805097,-0.471724 ], [ -90.805097,-0.451724 ], [ -90.78509,-0.451724 ], [ -90.78509,-0.471724 ], [ -90.805097,-0.471724 ] ] ] } } ] }","volume":"169","issue":"3944","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"5059f308e4b0c8380cd4b573","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Simkin, T.","contributorId":45833,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Simkin","given":"T.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":357862,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Howard, K. Recent examination of a collection of coregonines  at the Great Lakes Fishery Laboratory disclosed a hermaphroditic bloater(<i>Coregonus hoyi</i>). The fish was captured in a gill net set at 50 fathoms on the bottom of Lake Michigan approximately 7.5 miles NNW of Frankfort, Michigan, on November 2, 1955. The fish had a normal rate of growth and was 234 mm long and in its 5th year of life; it was normal in external appearance but was easily identified as a hermaphrodite by gross examination of its gonads","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"Transactions of the American Fisheries Society","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","publisher":"Taylor & Francis","publisherLocation":"London, UK","doi":"10.1577/1548-8659(1970)99<611:AHCFLM>2.0.CO;2","collaboration":"Out-of-print","usgsCitation":"Edsall, T.A., 1970, A hermaphroditic coregonine from Lake Michigan: Transactions of the American Fisheries Society, v. 99, no. 3, https://doi.org/10.1577/1548-8659(1970)99<611:AHCFLM>2.0.CO;2.","productDescription":"611 p.","startPage":"611 p.","costCenters":[{"id":324,"text":"Great Lakes Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":266599,"type":{"id":10,"text":"Digital Object Identifier"},"url":"https://dx.doi.org/10.1577/1548-8659(1970)99<611:AHCFLM>2.0.CO;2"},{"id":130365,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"99","issue":"3","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b24e4b07f02db6ae48e","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Edsall, Thomas A.","contributorId":84302,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Edsall","given":"Thomas","email":"","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[{"id":324,"text":"Great Lakes Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":308175,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

This was the story of the Brandywine Plan, an attempt to organize local people for the permanent protection of the environmental amenities of their own land.</p><p>The Upper East Branch of Brandywine Creek drains a rolling basin of farms, fields, woodlands, and a sprinkling of residential areas. Because it lies at the far edge of the commuting range to the population centers of Philadelphia and Wilmington, the basin's natural beauty has barely been touched by the blight of suburban sprawl. The waters of its streams are clear; its ample woodlands and fields are filled with wildlife. Driving slowly through the basin's winding roads and across its narrow bridges evokes the feeling of a pastoral painting, of the ideal landscape of rural eastern America.</p><p>For two years, I had the privilege of working closely with a group preparing a land plan for the Brandywine area. The plan was designed to offer the inhabitants of the basin a feasible way to preserve forever the natural qualities of their region from the inevitable wave of urbanization. A report in Science magazine called it the perfect plan that failed. </p>","language":"English","publisher":"American Museum of Natural History","usgsCitation":"Leopold, L.B., 1970, Let's Sing 'Auld Lang Syne' for the Upper Brandywine: Or, to continue with Burns, how the best laid environmental schemes of men \"gang aft a-gley\" : Natural History, v. 79, p. 5-15.","productDescription":"11 p.","startPage":"5","endPage":"15","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":338684,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"79","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"58dcc823e4b02ff32c685768","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Leopold, Luna Bergere","contributorId":93884,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Leopold","given":"Luna","email":"","middleInitial":"Bergere","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":687153,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}
