Some of the large, low‐grade nickel‐copper deposits of Bohemia Basin, Yakobi Island, south‐eastern Alaska, which previously had been mapped and studied by the United States Geological Survey, were explored during parts of 1941 and 1942 by the United States Bureau of Mines. The Gealogical Survey interpreted the geologic features of the deposits as revealed by the work of the Bureau of Mines. The explorations were made largely by diamond‐drilling. The three deposits most extensively tested are arranged around a small valley.

Having been stationed in Houston, Texas, in the heart of the Gulf Coast Area for four and a half years, the writer has had an opportunity to view the great similarity of the problems confronting the petroleum geologist and engineer and the ground‐water hydrologist. Both groups deal with the accumulation, movement, and withdrawal of fluid from underground strata, yet each group is content to study its own literature and use its own terminology without much concern for the other. The petroleum and ground‐water engineer, independently of one another, have developed mathematical formulas for the determination of permeability from field‐data. These formulas use the same basic principles of physics and the initial papers on the subject by both groups were published within two years of one another. Because of the similarity in the technology and problems of the petroleum engineer and the ground‐water hydrologist there is a definite need for closer cooperation. Some of the problems are so closely related that their solution rests in cooperative studies.

If the stratigraphic or structural surfaces are plane, as the bedding planes of a homocline, two problems may exist, depending upon whether the drill cores do or do not penetrate to some recognizable horizon. The first of these is solved by a simple graphic interpolation, and is not discussed in this paper. The second, however, is solved for the most general case of three non-parallel drill holes, no one of which is necessarily vertical. Errors are necessarily present in this solution, due to: 1. Inaccuracies in the measurement of the initial directions and dips of the drill holes. 2. Deviations of the drill holes from their initial directions. 3. Inaccuracies in the measurement of the angles between the axes of the drill cores, and the stratigraphic or structural planes. The second and third of these causes result in initial errors in the measurement of the core angles. Hence, for this simplest case, error formulm are developed for finding the final errors in the angles of strike and dip, under certain specified assumptions. To illustrate the solution, a problem is stated and solved. This problem is of a general nature, selected to show the necessary operations when the three drill holes occur in different octants. The error formulae are subsequently applied. For curved surfaces, as where folded beds are present, the same two problems arise, depending upon whether the drill holes do or do not penetrate to some recognizable horizon. Only the first of these problems is considered. It is shown, in this case, that 9 drill holes are required to obtain a satisfactory solution. The method consists essentially in fitting nine known points to a ternary quadric surface; and in determining the equations of the planes tangent to this surface at any of the nine points, or at any other points on the surface. The strikes and dips are then derived from these equations. © 1943 Society of Economic Geologists, Inc.

Some time previous to 1823, Levi Disbrow studied the drilling methods used in the western salt industry and came east to become the first professional water well driller in the states north of the Potomac River. Possibly the first artesian water well in the United States was constructed in 1820 in Charleston, South Carolina, by sinking an iron pipe through a clay bed. Auger boring for artesian water appears to have been first used in Charleston, South Carolina, in 1823; however, the first successful auger-bored well was not completed in that city until after 1825. The drilling methods and tools were copied from a description of a well bored in London, England. Between 1821 and 1833 auger boring of artesian wells began in the Black Belt of Alabama and possibly in Mississippi. The process of jetting wells, invented in 1884, became the chief method of sinking artesian wells in the Atlantic and Gulf Coastal Plain by the end of the century. The first successful artesian wells in Georgia and Florida were put down during the period 1880-1882. © 1943 Society of Economic Geologists, Inc.

Individual issues contain information on volcanic activity, volcano research, and volcano monitoring in Hawaii. Information on volcanic activity at other locations is also occasionally included.
The Volcano Letter was published by HVO through multiple changes in administration, including the Hawaiian Volcano Research Association (1925 to 1932), the U.S. Geological Survey (1932 to 1935), the Department of the Interior (1935 to 1938), and the University of Hawai‘i (1938 to 1955). Issues 1-262 were published weekly from January 1, 1925, to January 2, 1930, and consisted of a single page of text. Issues 263-384, also published weekly, from January 9, 1930, to May 5, 1932, were generally longer—four pages— and provided more detail on volcanic activity, including photographs, maps, and plots. Weekly issues 385-387, published May 12-26, 1932, were a single page of text due to budget reductions brought on by the Great Depression. Budget restrictions reduced the publishing frequency to monthly for issues 388-428, covering the period of June 1932 to October 1935; these issues were generally shorter, 1-2 pages, and sometimes featured figures. From November 1935 to July 1938, issues 429-461 remained monthly but increased in length (generally eight pages) and featured figures frequently. Issues 462-530, published over the period of August 1938 to December 1955, varied in length from 2-15 pages, but were published quarterly, rather than monthly.

The report aimed to present in a very brief manner the background of the establishment of the Board, its program, and the fishery problems that confronted it with particular reference to the international point of view. Ferrous sulfate is essentially unoxidized and is titrated with permanganate after aeration. Best results are obtained by using 0.0003 millimole of copper sulfate in about 300 ml. of solution.
