The Chad Basin is underlain by the Chad Formation, a series of fluvio-lacustrine sediments which attain a thickness of 1,500 feet or more in Nigeria. Three water-bearing zones, designated Upper, Middle and Lower, have been identified in the Chad Formation of Nigeria. The Upper Zone aquifer, which contains water under both unconfined and confined conditions, provides the principal source of water to dug wells for domestic and village water supply. The Middle Zone aquifer is tapped by numerous deep boreholes (drilled wells) which provide water by artesian flow in more than 13,000 square miles of Nigeria north and east of Maiduguri. Chart 8530, and over 750 km of additional sounding lines made in 1965 and in 1968. Continuous reflection seismic records made along the same tracks as the bathymetric profiles served as the basis for the Isopach map. For the determination of sediment thicknesses a sound velocity in sediment of 1.5 km/sec was used. structural development of the Quadrilatero Ferrifero, Minas Gerais, Brazil","docAbstract":"<p>The Quadrilatero Ferrifero is an area of some 7,000 square kilometers in central Minas Gerais, Brazil centered about lat. 20&deg;15' S, long. 43&deg;30' W. &nbsp;For 250 years the region has poured forth a variety of mineral riches, now totaling more than $2 billion, and future production will undoubtedly be even greater. &nbsp;The main products are iron ore, manganese ore, and gold. &nbsp;To assist this development, the Braziliam and American Governments in 1946 jointly undertook the first detailed geologic study of the region: this report is a synthesis of the results of work and mapping by 17 Brazilian and American geologists under this program; other reports discussing the economic geology, the metamorphic geology, and the igneous geology of the region as a whole are being prepared.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Government Printing
