Electrode spacings (AB/2 or R) reaching 12,000 ft allowed exploration to depths of about 7000 ft. Geoelectrical information on the subsurface materials was augmented by sounding with the bilateral equatorial configuration and by transforming Schlumberger curves into dipole-polar sounding curves with formulas developed by Al'pin and by Tsekov. The bilateral equatorial sounding curves were found useful for detecting the direction of dip of highly resistive bedrocks whereas transformed sounding curves were used to evaluate the average longitudinal resistivity, and hence the depth, to the \"electric basement.\" A few of the Schlumberger sounding curves were either clearly or subtly distorted by nonhorizontal geologic structures. The interpretation of these sounding curves illustrates the requirement for careful analysis in processing electrical prospecting data obtained over complex geologic conditions. The interpretation of a combined Schlumberger-equatorial sounding curve, which did not agree with the preliminary interpretation of seismic refraction data, was confirmed to be correct by data from a test well drilled to a depth of 4363 ft. The application of electrical sounding data in the El Paso area furnished valuable information on the depth to fresh-water-saltwater interfaces and on the depth to highly resistive impervious bedrocks.
","language":"English","publisher":"Society of Exploration Geophysicists","doi":"10.1190/1.1440042","usgsCitation":"Zohdy, A.A., 1969, The use of Schlumberger and equatorial soundings in groundwater investigations near El Paso, Texas: Geophysics, v. 34, no. 5, p. 713-728, https://doi.org/10.1190/1.1440042.","productDescription":"16 p.","startPage":"713","endPage":"728","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":389098,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Texas","city":"El Paso","otherGeospatial":"Hueco Bolson","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -106.06063842773438,\n              31.675589707562505\n            ],\n            [\n              -105.029296875,\n              31.675589707562505\n            ],\n            [\n              -105.029296875,\n              32.00225320314841\n            ],\n            [\n              -106.06063842773438,\n              32.00225320314841\n            ],\n            [\n              -106.06063842773438,\n              31.675589707562505\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"34","issue":"5","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Zohdy, Adel A. The areal division of responsibility within the program is shown on a map of California by Chapman (p. 542).

It is evident from a plot of existing stations that considerably more data are required in the eastern Mojave Desert located in the southeastern corner of the state, and in the Sierra Nevada north of Lake Tahoe. Additional fill-in work is needed in nearly all parts of the state. The data requirements vary for a 5-mgal contour map depending on the local complexity of the gravity field; but in general, we are obtaining gravity stations at an interval of about 3 km along roads, trails, and rivers, and 5 to 8 km between these access routes by cross-country jeep, horseback, or helicopter if necessary. About 6000 new stations were obtained in California by the Geological Survey during 1968 and we expect to obtain about 3000 more in 1969.
","language":"English","publisher":"American Geophysical Shortly before the 1963 AGU gravity symposium [Barnes, 1965], the emphasis shifted from local surveys to the preparation of a reconnaissance gravity map of the whole state with a 10-mgal contour interval on a scale of 1:2,500,000, which would be similar to the gravity map of the United States [Woollard and Joesting, 1964]. Data have now been obtained in approximately three-fourths of the state, but there are large variations in both station density and geologic usefulness of the coverage. The amount of coverage is primarily influenced by the distribution of water bodies because more than three-fourths of the stations have been obtained by riverboats, small skiffs, and floatplanes.
","language":"English","publisher":"American Geophysical Union","doi":"10.1029/EO050i010p00550","usgsCitation":"Barnes, D., 1969, Progress on a gravity map of Alaska: Eos Science News, v. 50, no. 10, p. 550-552, https://doi.org/10.1029/EO050i010p00550.","productDescription":"3 p.","startPage":"550","endPage":"552","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":389161,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Alaska","volume":"50","issue":"10","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2011-06-03","publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Barnes, David F.","contributorId":72787,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Barnes","given":"David F.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":823227,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

A section of pre-trench, deep oceanic sediments rests on the down-warped crust that forms the trench. Nearly horizontal undeformed strata that unconformably overlie this deep oceanic section partially fill the trench. The trench fill is thickest near present sediment sources. A Pliocene age for development of the eastern Aleutian Trench is estimated from the thickness of deep oceanic sediment that accumulated after the trench began to fill. The eastern Aleutian Trench thus appears younger than the central Aleutian Trench—a relation which helps to explain the distribution of sediment along the two trench segments.

Depression of the eastern Aleutian Trench diminished or virtually ended soon after the trench began to fill. The undeformed fill provides no evidence for a large thrust fault zone at the base of the continental slope. Nor is there any evidence that oceanic sediments have disappeared beneath the continents in late Tertiary time. These observations are difficult to reconcile with the simple model of a continental margin advanced in the hypothesis of plate tectonics.
","language":"English","publisher":"Geological Society of America","doi":"10.1130/0016-7606(1969)80[1889:TSATHO]2.0.CO;2","usgsCitation":"von Huene, R.E., and Shor, G.G., 1969, The structure and tectonic history of the eastern Aleutian Trench: Geological Society of America Bulletin, v. 80, no. 10, p. 1889-1902, https://doi.org/10.1130/0016-7606(1969)80[1889:TSATHO]2.0.CO;2.","productDescription":"16 p.","startPage":"1889","endPage":"1902","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":390048,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Alaska","otherGeospatial":"Aleutian Trench, Gulf of Alaska","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -169.3212890625,\n 52.855864177853974\n ],\n [\n -169.0576171875,\n 52.07950600379697\n ],\n [\n -153.80859375,\n 55.89995614406812\n ],\n [\n -144.580078125,\n 60.673178565817715\n ],\n [\n -150.205078125,\n 61.75233128411639\n ],\n [\n -169.365234375,\n 53.85252660044951\n ],\n [\n -169.3212890625,\n 52.855864177853974\n ]\n ]\n ]\n }\n }\n ]\n}","volume":"80","issue":"10","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"von Huene, Roland E. 0000-0003-1301-3866 rvonhuene@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0003-1301-3866","contributorId":191070,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"von Huene","given":"Roland","email":"rvonhuene@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[{"id":7065,"text":"USGS emeritus","active":true,"usgs":false},{"id":237,"text":"Earthquake Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":824385,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Shor, George G. The apparent viscosity increases more than two orders of magnitude between 1200 and 1120 °C (0–25 per cent crystallization) for shear rates of about 10 sec-1 and even more for lower shear rates. Non-Newtonian behaviour of ‘pseudo-plastic type’ becomes extremely pronounced at temperatures below about 1130 °C. At these temperatures, differences of less than 5 °C can produce changes in apparent viscosity amounting to orders of magnitude. These observations have led to the conclusion that the heat of deformation must itself influence rheological behaviour in the melting range. An equation for thermal energy balances and their rates of change is constructed and placed in a non-dimensional form that has been given published solutions by I. J. Gruntfest (1963) relating the shear stress, rate of strain, and temperature through the temperature dependence of viscosity. The results show that in an adiabatic system the heating rate increases with time so that the temperature eventually runs out of bounds, a process termed ‘thermal feedback’ by Gruntfest. A hypothesis of shear melting is derived on the basis of a simplified viscosity function extrapolated to the solidus temperature. The hypothesis is applied to magma generation in the earth on the basis of dimensional arguments. It is also suggested that thermal instabilities give rise to a sort of viscous failure responsible for deep-focus earthquakes, and that the two phenomena have the same cause relating ultimately to a gravitational energy source.
","language":"English","publisher":"Oxford University Press","doi":"10.1093/petrology/10.3.510","usgsCitation":"Shaw, H.R., 1969, Rheology of basalt in the melting range: Journal of Petrology, v. 10, no. 3, p. 510-535, https://doi.org/10.1093/petrology/10.3.510.","productDescription":"26 p.","startPage":"510","endPage":"535","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":388488,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"10","issue":"3","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Shaw, Herbert R.","contributorId":29813,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Shaw","given":"Herbert","email":"","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":821938,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

First, the use of high-speed computers and an increasing variety of supplemental data now make possible the geologic interpretation of gravity anomalies so small that they would not have been noticed in surveys made ten years ago. The kind of gravity interpretation that identifies small reefs and local accumulations of petroleum [McCulloh, 1967] often requires local increases in station density and the assurance that the calibration of meters used in all parts of a survey are compatible. Second, temporal changes of gravity have already been measured in connection with earthquakes [Barnes, 1966], volcanic eruptions [Iida et al, 1952], and the movement of ice caps [Behrendt, 1967]; they are now being considered for several other types of geologic processes.
","language":"English","publisher":"American Age ratios of snow geese obtained from net-trapped samples were significantly higher (P < 0.01) than from group counts at the same site. Immature snow geese were shot in a significantly greater (P < 0.01) proportion than they existed in the population as determined by group counts. Cannon-net catches and hunter-bag checks of snow and Canada geese yielded age ratios which were biased because of behavioral characteristics of the geese. Immatures of both species were less wary of trap equipment and immature snow geese were more vulnerable to the gun than adults. It was believed that age ratios from group counts of snow geese were more representative of the population than those from net catches and hunter-bag checks. Sex ratios of net-trapped geese showed a preponderance of males for adult Canada and adult and immature snow geese, whereas females were predominant in the immature segment of Canada geese. Hunter selectivity of blue- or white-phase snow geese was not observed at Sand Lake Refuge. Differential vulnerability to hunting between snow and Canada geese resulted from differences m feeding-flight behavior.
","language":"English","publisher":"Wiley","doi":"10.2307/3799330","usgsCitation":"Higgins, K., Linder, R.L., and Springer, P.F., 1969, A comparison of methods used to obtain age ratios of snow and Canada geese: Journal of Wildlife Management, v. 33, no. 4, p. 949-956, https://doi.org/10.2307/3799330.","productDescription":"8 p.","startPage":"949","endPage":"956","costCenters":[{"id":480,"text":"Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":133718,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"South Dakota","otherGeospatial":"Sand Lake National Wildlife Refuge","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -98.27760434034772,\n 45.83397560101784\n ],\n [\n -98.27760434034772,\n 45.720519376360016\n ],\n [\n -98.20285885238978,\n 45.720519376360016\n ],\n [\n -98.20285885238978,\n 45.83397560101784\n ],\n [\n -98.27760434034772,\n 45.83397560101784\n ]\n ]\n ],\n \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n }\n }\n ]\n}","volume":"33","issue":"4","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b27e4b07f02db6b0f14","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Higgins, Kenneth F.","contributorId":272584,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Higgins","given":"Kenneth F.","affiliations":[{"id":5089,"text":"South Dakota State University","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":311101,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Linder, R. In order to investigate the possible mechanisms, stable emulsions of oil in water were prepared without the use of wetting agents. They consisted of droplets 1/2 to 1-1/2 microns in diameter, in a concentration of 20 to 40 parts of oil per million of water. These emulsions passed freely through filter paper and ordinary passed freely through filter paper and ordinary sand. A plastic tube containing glass beads of 200-microns diameter included a bed 1/2-cm thick of crushed beads 37 to 88 microns in diameter. When the emulsion was passed through this tube, up to 80 percent of the oil was screened out at the coarse-fine interface. The amount removed depended on the contrast in grain size, the nature and the preferential wettability of the media. Similar results occurred when quartz sand was used as the coarse, and crushed sand as the fine medium. This screening did not occur as a result of capillary effects., because the pores were many times the diameter of the droplets. The oil collected as a result of flocculation of the droplets into strings and clusters., and the oil saturation in the pores consisted of masses of droplets with very little coalescence. Possibly electrostatic forces are more important Possibly electrostatic forces are more important than capillary in the behavior of fine, disperse, oil-in-water emulsions. our current ideas on multiphase flow in porous media may not apply to disperse emulsions.
","largerWorkType":{"id":4,"text":"Book"},"largerWorkTitle":"Fall meeting of the Society of Petroleum Engineers of AIME","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":12,"text":"Conference publication"},"conferenceTitle":"44th Annual Fall Meeting of the Society of Petroleum Engineers of AIME","conferenceDate":"September 28-October 1st, 1969","conferenceLocation":"Denver, CO","language":"English","publisher":"American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical, and Petroleum Engineers, Inc.","doi":"10.2118/2481-MS","usgsCitation":"Cartmill, J.C., and Dickey, P.A., 1969, Flow of a disperse emulsion of crude oil in water in porous media, in Fall meeting of the Society of Petroleum Engineers of AIME, v. 44, Denver, CO, September 28-October 1st, 1969, SPE-2481-MS, 7 p., https://doi.org/10.2118/2481-MS.","productDescription":"SPE-2481-MS, 7 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":390637,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"44","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"1969-09-28","publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Cartmill, John C.","contributorId":267844,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Cartmill","given":"John","email":"","middleInitial":"C.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":825383,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Dickey, Parke A.","contributorId":267845,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Dickey","given":"Parke","email":"","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[{"id":38022,"text":"University of Tulsa","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":825384,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}
