It includes all or parts of the following 13 counties: Columbia, Dane, Dodge, Fond du Lac, Green Lake, Jefferson, Kenosha, Milwaukee, Racine, Rock, Walworth, Washington, and Waukesha. The purposes of the study were to determine the general hydrologic properties of the rocks in the area and the occurrence and quality c f the water in them. Structurally, the area is a downfolded basin surrounded by upfolded mountain ranges. Igneous and metamorphic rocks of Precambrian age are exposed in the mountains: folded sedimentary rocks representing all geologic periods, except the Silurian, crop out along the margins of the basin; and relatively flat-lying Tertiary rocks are at the surface in the central part of the basin. Surficial sand and gravel deposits of Quaternary age occur along streams and \r\nunderlie numerous terraces throughout the basin. \r\n\r\nThe potential yield and quality of water from most rocks in the area are poorly known, but estimates are possible, based on local well data and on data concerning similar rocks in nearby areas. Yields of more than 1,000 gpm are possible from the rocks comprising the Bighorn Dolomite (Ordovician), Darby Formation (Devonian), Madison Limestone (Mississippian), and Tensleep Sandstone (Pennsylvanian). Total dissolved solids in the water range from about 300 to 3,000 ppm. \r\n\r\nYields of as much as several hundred gallons per minute are possible from the Nugget Sandstone (Jurassic? and Triassic?). Yields of 20 gpm or more are possible from the Crow Mountain Sandstone (Triassic) and Sundance Formation (Jurassic). Dissolved solids are generally high but are less than 1,000 ppm near outcrops in some locations. \r\n\r\nThe Cloverly and Morrison (Cretaceous and Jurassic), Mesaverde (Cretaceous) and Lance(?) (Cretaceous) Formations may yield as much as several hundred gallons per minute, but most wells in Cretaceous rocks yield less than 20 gpm. Dissolved solids generally range from 1,000 to 5,000 ppm but may be higher. In some areas, water with less than 1,000 ppm dissolved solids may be available from the Cloverly and Morrison Formations. \r\n\r\nTertiary rocks yield a few to several hundred gallons per minute and dissolved solids generally range from 1,000 to 5,000 ppm. Wells in the Wind River Formation (Eocene) yield about 1.-500 gpm of water having dissolved solids of about 200-5,000 ppm.\r\n\r\nYields of a few to several hundred gallons per minute are available from alluvium (Quaternary). Dissolved solids range from about 200 to 5,000 ppm. Many parts of the Wind River Irrigation Project have become waterlogged. The relation of drainage problems to geology and the character and thickness of rocks in the irrigated areas are partly defined by sections drawn on the basis of test drilling. The drainage-problem areas are classified according to geologic similarities into five general groups: flood plains, terraces, underfit-stream valleys, slopes, and transitional areas. \r\n\r\nDrainage can be improved by open drains, buried drains, relief wells, and pumped wells or by pumping from sumps or drains. The methods that will be most successful depend on the local geologic and hydrologic conditions. In several areas, the most effective means of relieving the drainage problem would be to reduce the amount of infiltration of water by lining canals and ditches and by reducing irrigation water applications to the optimum. \r\n\r\nWater from underground storage in alluvium could supplement water from surface storage in some areas. A few thousand acre-feet of water per square mile are in storage in some of the alluvium. The use of both surface and underground storage would reduce the need for additional surface-storage facilities and also would alleviate drainage problems in the irrigated areas.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. G.P.O.,","doi":"10.3133/wsp1576I","usgsCitation":"McGreevy, L., Hodson, W.G., and Rucker, S.J., 1969, Ground-water resources of the Wind River Indian Reservation, Wyoming: U.S. Geological Survey Water Supply Paper 1576, v, 145 p. :ill., maps ;24 cm. +, https://doi.org/10.3133/wsp1576I.","productDescription":"v, 145 p. :ill., maps ;24 cm. +","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":137836,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1576i/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":28029,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1576i/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":28030,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1576i/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":28031,"rank":402,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1576i/plate-3.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":28032,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1576i/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a96e4b07f02db65a579","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"McGreevy, Laurence J.","contributorId":98706,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"McGreevy","given":"Laurence J.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":144904,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Hodson, Warren Gayler","contributorId":49337,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Hodson","given":"Warren","email":"","middleInitial":"Gayler","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":144903,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Rucker, Samuel J. The data were interpreted to allow evaluation of the geologic structure prior to the planning and excavation of two proposed tunnel complexes, Ul2t and Ul2p.\r\n\r\nDensity values for each of six rock units were determined to allow a two-dimensional analysis of the gravity data along the above-mentioned profiles. The surficial rocks of Quaternary and Tertiary age and the Tertiary volcanic rocks have a weighted average density of 1.86 gm/cc. The density of the caprock at Rainier and Aqueduct Mesas ranges from 2.17 gm/cc at UEI2p #1 to 2.27 gm/cc at UEI2t #1. The Gold Meadows stock and the associated Precambrian quartzite have an arithmetic average density of 2.60 gm/cc for all samples measured. About 540 of the tremors were of sufficient magnitude to be accurately located. Most of these were located within 2-3 miles of mine workings and were also near known or suspected faults. \r\n\r\nThe district-wide seismic activity generally consisted of two different patterns--a periodic increase in the daily number of tremors at weekly intervals, and also a less regular and longer term increase and decrease of seismic activity that occurred over a period of weeks or even months. The shorter and more regular pattern can be correlated with the mine work week and seems to result from mining. The longer term activity, however, does not correlate with known mining causes sad therefore seems to be .caused by natural stresses.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey],","doi":"10.3133/ofr6915","usgsCitation":"Barnes, B.K., Dunrud, C., and Hernandez, J., 1969, Seismic activity in the Sunnyside mining district, Utah, during 1967: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 69-15, 26 p. ill, maps ;29 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr6915.","productDescription":"26 p. ill, maps ;29 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":106433,"rank":700,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_8375.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"},"description":"8375"},{"id":145526,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1969/0015/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":40915,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1969/0015/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":40916,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1969/0015/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":40917,"rank":402,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1969/0015/plate-3.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":40918,"rank":403,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1969/0015/plate-4.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":40919,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1969/0015/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a9be4b07f02db65e120","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Barnes, Barton K.","contributorId":63018,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Barnes","given":"Barton","email":"","middleInitial":"K.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":166312,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Dunrud, C. Individual heavy snowfalls provide a rapid low-cost means of measuring total heat flow from such ground. After a favorable snowfall (heavy, brief duration, little wind, air temperature near 0°C), contacts between snow-covered and snow-free ground are mapped on a suitable base. Each mapped contact, as time elapses after a specific snowfall, is a heat-flow contour representing a decreasing rate of flow. Calibration of each mapped contact or snow line is made possible by the fact that snow remains on insulated surfaces (such as the boardwalks of Yellowstone's thermal areas) long after it has melted on adjacent warm ground. Heat-flow contours mapped to date range from 450 to 5500 μcal/cm<sup>2</sup> sec, or 300 to 3700 times the world average of conductive heat flow. The very high rates of heat flow (2000 to > 10,000 μcal/cm<sup>2</sup> sec) are probably too high, and the lower heat flows determinable by the method (<500 μcal/cm<sup>2</sup> sec) may be too low. Values indicated by the method are, however, probably within a factor of 2 of the total conductive and convective heat flow. Thermal anomalies from infrared imagery are similar in shape to heat-flow contours of a test area near Old Faithful geyser. Snowfall calorimetry provides a rapid means for evaluating the imagery and computer-derived products of the infrared data in terms of heat flow.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"American Geophysical Union","publisherLocation":"Richmond, VA","doi":"10.1029/JB074i022p05191","usgsCitation":"White, D.E., 1969, Rapid heat-flowing surveying of geothermal areas, utilizing individual snowfalls as calorimeters: Journal of Geophysical Research, v. 74, no. 22, p. 5191-5201, https://doi.org/10.1029/JB074i022p05191.","productDescription":"11 p.","startPage":"5191","endPage":"5201","numberOfPages":"11","costCenters":[{"id":222,"text":"Earth Resources Observation and Science (EROS) Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":288490,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":288489,"type":{"id":10,"text":"Digital Object Identifier"},"url":"https://dx.doi.org/10.1029/JB074i022p05191"}],"country":"United States","otherGeospatial":"Yellowstone National Park","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -110.8303542,44.459622 ], [ -110.8303542,44.4622875 ], [ -110.8266581,44.4622875 ], [ -110.8266581,44.459622 ], [ -110.8303542,44.459622 ] ] ] } } ] }","volume":"74","issue":"22","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2012-09-20","publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"539acc0fe4b0e83db6d08fbf","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"White, Donald E.","contributorId":76787,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"White","given":"Donald","email":"","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":494640,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

SLAR systems look obliquely to one or both sides and their images resemble aerial photographs taken at low sun angle with the sun directly behind the camera. They differ from air photos in geometry, resolution, and information content. Radar operates at much lower frequencies than the human eye, camera, or infrared sensors, and thus \"sees\" differently. The lower frequency enables it to penetrate most clouds and some precipitation, haze, dust, and some vegetation. Radar provides its own illumination, which can be closely controlled in intensity and frequency. It is narrow band, or essentially monochromatic.</p>\n<br/>\n<p>Low relief and subdued features are accentuated when viewed from the proper direction. Runs over the same area in significantly different directions (more than 45° from each other), show that images taken in one direction may emphasize features that are not emphasized on those taken in the other direction; optimum direction is determined by those features which need to be emphasized for study purposes. </p>\n<br/>\n<p>Lineaments interpreted as faults stand out on radar imagery of central and western Nevada; folded sedimentary rocks cut by faults can be clearly seen on radar imagery of northern Alabama.
