Injection of insulin concurrently with refeeding also failed to alter the specific activity of the enzyme in trout. The absence of a dietary or insulin influence on the teleost enzyme system is to be contrasted with studies in mammals in which the activity of hepatic glucose 6-P dehydrogenase was markedly stimulated after refeeding starved animals or injection of insulin.Ingestion of the pesticide DDT by juvenile coho salmon or adult rainbow trout also had no effect on the specific activity of liver glucose 6-P dehydrogenase and DDT failed to inhibit the rainbow trout enzyme in vitro. These results also differ considerably from those found in higher animals.These results suggest that the glucose 6-P dehydrogenase enzyme in teleosts may be under a different type of regulatory control from that found in mammals.</span></p>","language":"English","publisher":"NRC Research Press","doi":"10.1139/f69-302","usgsCitation":"Buhler, D.R., and Benville, P., 1969, Effect of feeding and of DDT on the activity of hepatic glucose 6- phosphate dehydrogenase in two salmonids: Journal of the Fisheries Research Board of Canada, v. 26, no. 12, p. 3209-3216, https://doi.org/10.1139/f69-302.","productDescription":"8 p.","startPage":"3209","endPage":"3216","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":192,"text":"Columbia Environmental Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":321700,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"26","issue":"12","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"5746ccb7e4b07e28b662dc95","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Buhler, Donald R.","contributorId":169619,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Buhler","given":"Donald","email":"","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":630327,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Benville, P.","contributorId":169623,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Benville","given":"P.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":630328,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

He conceived of three different historical relationships between rivers and structural features: (1) Newly uplifted land surfaces have rivers that flow down the initial slope of the uplift; these relationships he termed consequent. (2) A river may be older than an uplift that it crosses because it has been able to maintain its course by eroding downward as the uplift progresses; this relationship he named antecedent. (3) An uplifted block may have been buried by younger deposits upon which a river becomes established. The river, in cutting downward, uncovers the uplifted block and becomes incised into it; this relationship he called superimposed.</p><p>The geologic history of the Colorado River involves all three relationships. In addition, although the position of the river course through a particular structural barrier may have been the result of superposition, the depth of the canyon at that point may be largely due to renewed uplift of the barrier; such deepening of the canyon, therefore, is due to antecedence. The problem of the Colorado River remains today very much as G. K. Gilbert stated it nearly 100 years ago: \"How much is antecedent and how much is superimposed?\" The question must be asked separately for each stretch of the river. </p>","largerWorkType":{"id":18,"text":"Report"},"largerWorkTitle":"The Colorado River region and John Wesley Powell (Professional Paper 669)","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":5,"text":"USGS Numbered Series"},"language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Government Printing Office","publisherLocation":"Washington, D.C.","doi":"10.3133/pp669C","usgsCitation":"Hunt, C.B., 1969, Geologic history of the Colorado River: Chapter C in <i>The Colorado River region and John Wesley Powell (Professional Paper 669)</i>: U.S. Geological Survey Professional Paper 669, iv, 72 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/pp669C.","productDescription":"iv, 72 p.","startPage":"59","endPage":"130","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":338556,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"},{"id":338554,"rank":1,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/0669/report.pdf#page=71"}],"country":"United States","otherGeospatial":"Colorado River","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"58dcc824e4b02ff32c685772","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Hunt, Charles B. cdhunt@usgs.gov","contributorId":16079,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Hunt","given":"Charles","email":"cdhunt@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"B.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":686766,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Water temperatures were low (3.7-8.3 A?C) at all fishing stations except one (16.4 A?C). Supplementary data were provided by the Bureau's R/V Kaho in 1966. Alewives and smelt were common. Ciscoes were extremely scarce, but large; most of those caught were bloaters. Slimy sculpins were abundant, but no deepwater sculpins were caught. Yellow perch were scarce. Although the warm water species were inadequately sampled, trout-perch seemed to be abundant. Breeding pair use of the wetland habitat and importance of Type 1 ponds in the wetland complex were evaluated. Changes in breeding pair densities and wetland habitat conditions on the study area were compared for the 16-year period, 1950-66.Blue-winged teal pair densities of 30.7 and 33.0 per square mile in 1965 and 1966, respectively, were above the 16-year average from 1950 to 1966 and near the maximum for this period. Blue-winged teal comprised 46.7 per cent of the waterfowl breeding population in 1965 and 51.7 per cent in 1966. Number of water areas per square mile through mid-spring 1965 was comparable to the average for the 16-year period, whereas during late spring 1965 and throughout the 1966 spring breeding seasons the number of water areas increased to near optimum conditions.Annual breeding-pair densities from 1950 to 1966 appeared to be largely influenced by water conditions, and pair-density fluctuations resulted from changes in number of wet ponds from late April through mid-May. Variations in water conditions after this period did not appear to have as great an effect on numbers of breeding teal.Use of wetland habitat by pairs changed throughout the spring breeding seasons. During the post-arrival period, teal congregated on larger wetlands. With onset of egg-laying, pairs dispersed into ponds throughout the wetland complex to establish breeding home ranges. Other factors that influenced changes in habitat use included: 1) pond type and size, 2) breeding cycle phenology, 3) availability of wet ponds, and 4) land use. Number of blue-winged teal pairs per unit area of water was highest in 1965 and 1966 on Type 1B ponds, followed in decreasing order by Types 3, 1A, and 4 and 5. Greater use of Type 1B ponds was probably related to larger ratio of edge or shore line to unit area of water. Interspersion of many small wetlands throughout the breeding habitat provided for maximum pair dispersal during egg-laying and early incubation stages of the reproductive cycle.","largerWorkType":{"id":18,"text":"Report"},"largerWorkTitle":"Transactions of the Saskatoon Wetlands Seminar","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":4,"text":"Other Government Series"},"language":"English","publisher":"Canadian Wildlife Service","usgsCitation":"Drewien, R., and Springer, P.F., 1969, Ecological relationships of breeding blue-winged teal to prairie potholes: Report Series 6, p. 102-115.","productDescription":"p. 102-115","startPage":"102","endPage":"115","numberOfPages":"14","costCenters":[{"id":480,"text":"Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":198473,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4889e4b07f02db51b459","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Drewien, Rod C.","contributorId":58594,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Drewien","given":"Rod C.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":325132,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Springer, P. Each formulation of toxicant was lethal under all water conditions to fish eggs, fry, fingerlings, and adult fish. Trouts are the most sensitive and catfishes the least sensitive. Of the 31 species, 24 succumb to 5 p.p.b. or less of the toxicant; only certain catfishes survive 25 p.p.b, The order of toxicity to various species of fish suggests that antimycin has possibilities for selective or partial control of certain unwanted fish. Although toxic to fish under ice, antimycin is more active in warm water than in cold. It is slightly more active in soft water than in hard; it is more active and persists far longer in water at pH 5 to 8 than at pH 9 or 10. It is active on fish in either clear and turbid waters, and it can be detoxified by potassium permanganate, The results contributed to registration of antimycin A in Fintrol-5 formulation as a fish toxicant.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Bureau of Sport Fisheries and Wildlife","publisherLocation":"La Crosse, WI","usgsCitation":"Berger, B.L., Lennon, R.E., and Hogan, J.W., 1969, Laboratory studies on antimycin A as a fish toxicant: Investigations in Fish Control 26, 21.","productDescription":"21","startPage":"0","endPage":"21","numberOfPages":"21","costCenters":[{"id":606,"text":"Upper Midwest Environmental Sciences Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":199416,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b32e4b07f02db6b4446","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Berger, Bernard L.","contributorId":20373,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Berger","given":"Bernard","email":"","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":325313,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Lennon, Robert E.","contributorId":14341,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Lennon","given":"Robert","email":"","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":325312,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Hogan, James W.","contributorId":24402,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Hogan","given":"James","email":"","middleInitial":"W.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":325314,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

The extent to which selective feeding or rejection of foods is a function of behavioral and morphological adaptations of the species, conditioned behavior of the individual, or individual preference for certain foods has not been appraised. The objectives of our study were to determine: (1) the extent of selective feeding among juvenile Canvasbacks (<i>Aytha valisineria</i>) and redheads (<i>A. americana</i>), (2) which food items were and which were not utilized, and (3) how selective use was related to the relative quality and availability of the food resource. Some workers have considered it to be a pseudomorph after diamond, and have used the proposed diamond ancestry as evidence of a meteoritic parent body of at least lunar dimensions. Careful examination of meteoritic samples indicates that cliftonite forms by precipitation within kamacite. We have also demonstrated that graphite with cubic morphology may be synthesized in a Fe-Ni-C alloy annealed in a vacuum. We therefore suggest that a high pressure origin is unnecessary for meteorities which contain cliftonite, and that these meteorities were formed at low pressures. This conclusion is in agreement with other recent evidence.</p><p>We also suggest that recently discovered cubes and cubo-octahedra of lonsdaleite in the Canyon Diablo meteorite are pseudomorphs after cliftonite, not diamond, as has previously been suggested.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"Elsevier","doi":"10.1016/0016-7037(69)90151-3","issn":"00167037","usgsCitation":"Brett, R., and Higgins, G., 1969, Cliftonite: A proposed origin, and its bearing on the origin of diamonds in meteorites: Geochimica et Cosmochimica Acta, v. 33, no. 12, 14 p., https://doi.org/10.1016/0016-7037(69)90151-3.","productDescription":"14 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":219592,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"33","issue":"12","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"5059f646e4b0c8380cd4c660","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Brett, R.","contributorId":106632,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Brett","given":"R.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":357878,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Higgins, G.T.","contributorId":52971,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Higgins","given":"G.T.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":357877,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}
