The study was begun in April 1954, to determine precipitation, runoff, probable sources and yields of sediment, and channel changes in two small watersheds in Pennsylvania. This report covers the period April 1954, to September 30, 1955 with the exception of the aggradation-degradation range data which covers the period October 1954 to November 1956. The internal or time control method of calibration is being used for the Bixler Run watershed study, and an external control is being used in the Corey Creek study.

Precipitation on Bixler Run watershed was 47.33 inches for the 1955 water year. Total runoff was 14.08 inches and the suspended sediment yield was 1,143.3 tons or 76 tons per square mile of drainage area. Precipitation on Corey Creek watershed for the same period totaled 35.81 inches. The total runoff was 8.37 inches and the suspended-sediment yield was 713.0 tons or 58.2 tons per square mile of drainage area. The precipitation on Elk Run, external control watershed for the Corey Creek study was 34.54 inches. The runoff was 10.10 inches and the suspended sediment yield was 709.9 tons or 69.5 tons per square mile.

Results from the study of channel changes by means of sediment aggradation-degradation ranges showed fill in all three watersheds. Bixler Run showed an average channel fill of 1.3 square feet per stream cross section. Corey Creek and Elk Run watersheds showed average fills of 2.9 and 4.1 square feet per cross section respectively. Most of the sediments comprising this fill were in the particle size range of gravel and coarser material.

The water in all three watersheds was low in dissolved solids during the period of investigation, varying from 72 to 127 ppm in Bixler Run, from 58 to 130 ppm in Corey Creek, and from 58 to 117 ppm in Elk Run. These waters are essentially of the secondary alkaline type with calcium and magnesium bicarbonate being the main dissolved constituents.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Harrisburg, PA","doi":"10.3133/ofr5730","issn":"0094-9140","usgsCitation":"Culbertson, J., 1957, Progress report of hydrology and sedimentation in Bixler Run, Corey Creek, and Elk Run watersheds, Pennsylvania: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 57-30, iii, 44 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr5730.","productDescription":"iii, 44 p.","numberOfPages":"49","costCenters":[{"id":532,"text":"Pennsylvania Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":155477,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/ofr5730.PNG"},{"id":330297,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1957/0030/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":465502,"rank":3,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_52766.htm","text":"Corey Creek and Elk Run watersheds","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":465503,"rank":4,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_52770.htm","text":"Bixier Run watershed","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Pennsylvania","otherGeospatial":"Bixler Run Watershed, Corey Creek Watershed, Elk Run Watershed","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -77.0833,\n              41.8553\n            ],\n            [\n              -77.0833,\n              41.7561\n            ],\n            [\n              -76.9639,\n              41.7561\n            ],\n            [\n              -76.9639,\n              41.8553\n            ],\n            [\n              -77.0833,\n              41.8553\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    },\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -77.4972,\n              40.4214\n            ],\n            [\n              -77.4972,\n              40.3633\n            ],\n            [\n              -77.3833,\n              40.3633\n            ],\n            [\n              -77.3833,\n              40.4214\n            ],\n            [\n              -77.4972,\n              40.4214\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a9be4b07f02db65df78","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Culbertson, J.K.","contributorId":11649,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Culbertson","given":"J.K.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":188937,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The tables and bibliography will assist Geological Survey personnel assigned to the Delaware Basin Project in evaluating the scope and deficiencies of previous studies of the basin. Information is also given on the use of water by public supplies in the New York-New Jersey region comprising the New York City Metropolitan Area and in the remaining north-central and south-eastern parts of New Jersey. These regions may depend increasingly on water from the Delaware River basin for part of their public supplies.
\n
\n
The Geological Survey has the responsibility for appraising and describing the water resources of the Nation as a guide to use, development, control, and conservation of these resources. Cooperative Federal-State water-resources investigations in the Delaware Basin States have been carried on the the Geological Survey for more than 50 years. In July 1956 the Survey began the \"Delaware Basin Project,\" a hydrologic study of the Delaware River basin in order to: 1) Determine present status and trends in water availability, quality, and use, 2) assess and improve the adequacy of the Survey's basic water data program in the basin, 3) interpret and evaluate the water-resources data in terms of past and possible future water-use and land-use practices, and 4) disseminate promptly the results of this investigation for the benefit of all interested agencies and the general public. The Geological Survey is working closely with the U.S. Corps of Engineers and other cooperating Federal and State agencies in providing water data which will contribute to the present coordinated investigation aimed at developing a plan for long-range water development in the Delaware River basin.
\n
\n
Estimates of quantities of water used are given for water withdrawn from streams and aquifers during calendar year 1955, as compiled or estimated from publications and manuscripts prepared between 1950 and 1956. All quantities are given in millions of gallons per day (mgd). The source of the water used, ground or surface, and the type of use to which is was put -- public supply, industrial supply, irrigation, or rural use -- is given. Use of water for hydroelectric power was not compiled for this report. Most tables in this report do not subdivide withdrawals into fresh and saline water; however, most supplies are fresh, except some of those withdrawn directly from the Delaware River downstream from Philadelphia, Pa. All quantities are expressed as an average rate for a full year and are lower, therefore, than rates resulting from the increased demand for water during the summer for air conditioning and supplemental irrigation.
\n
\n
The primary emphasis of this study was to get an over-all picture of water use throughout large parts of the basin. Therefore, publications relating to a dingle city or county, other than New York City, seldom were used; revisions and refinement based on such sources of information are best made by the field personnel most familiar with locally filed publications and published data.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Washington D.C.","doi":"10.3133/ofr5760","usgsCitation":"Kammerer, J., 1957, Records available to September 30, 1956, on use of water in the Delaware Basin Project area: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 57-60, ii, 33 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr5760.","productDescription":"ii, 33 p.","numberOfPages":"37","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":287385,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"},{"id":287384,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1957/0060/report.pdf"}],"country":"United States","state":"Delaware","otherGeospatial":"Delaware Basin","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -76.0,39.0 ], [ -76.0,42.0 ], [ -75.0,42.0 ], [ -75.0,39.0 ], [ -76.0,39.0 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a61e4b07f02db63579e","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Kammerer, John C.","contributorId":53815,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Kammerer","given":"John C.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":169392,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Other hydrologic studies such as low-flow, flood-frequency analyses, rainfall-runoff correlations, stream density, and area-distance make use of this factor as a basic premise for computation.
\n
In order that the drainage-area information of the interior streams of Iowa be of uniform accuracy and available to all users of these data, this report has been compiled, and the drainage areas of all streams in excess of 5 square mies are listed. For the larger streams, drainage areas have been determined at numerous intermediate points. As a result of this report much basic background material has been compiled that will he useful in future hydrologic studies of drainage basin characteristics.
\n
This publication is limited to the presentation of the drainage-area data for the interior streams of the State. Some lakes are used for water supply.
\n
The natural lakes are glacial in origin and are most concentrated in northeastern Indiana. Many of the lakes were drained by the early settlers. The natural processes of sedimentation ad accumulation of organic deposits tend also to reduce the number and size of lakes. The trend toward fewer lakes has been reversed in recent years by the construction of artificial lakes; the number of lakes has increased from a little over 500 in 1800 to 1,000 at the present time.
\n
The recreational value of the lakes and the desirability of maintaining constant lake level led to legislation relative to the establishment of legal lake levels and to a program of lake-level observations, supplemented by the collection of hydrologic data affecting lake levels.
\n
Observations of both surface temperature and temperature profile were made by investigates as early as 1875. The earlier data and data collected since 1946 have been analyzed to show the fluctuation of temperature with season, depth of water, size of lake, and other influencing factors. Surface temperature, which may vary several degrees within a 24-hour period, fluctuate with air temperature and reach highs of about 85°F in August. The bottom temperature of lakes more than 100 feet deep seldom rise above 45°F. Subsurface water temperatures below ice cover reach a uniform value of about 39°F except that just below the ice which remains closely 32°F. During summer, temperature stratification is established as the lake warms. Shallow lakes reach temperature extremes about 5°F above and below those of deep lakes. Size of the contributing drainage area, surface area of the lake, and flow through the lake have little effect on water temperatures below a depth of about 20 feet. Little aquatic life exists below depths of 30 feet from mid April to mid September owing to a lack of oxygen in the water. Large amounts of cool water, 50 to 10 degrees cooler than groundwater which averages 50°F to 55°F in northern Indiana, are available in the lower portions of the deep lakes.
\n
Evapotranspiration accounts for the disposal of about 70 percent of the precipitation in Indiana. During a year's time evaporation from the lake surface about equals the precipitation falling on the lake. During dry periods evaporation from a lake may exceed the inflow from small drainage areas and cause a lowering of lake levels. For the period April through October, evaporation as measure in a class A land pan of the U. S. Weather Bureau has averaged 44 inches at Evansville, 34 inches at Indianapolis, and 31 inches at Valpariso. A coefficient of about 0.7 is usually applied to yearly evaporation data from Class A land pans to obtain equivalent evaporation from lake surfaces.
\n
Ice cover on the lakes extends from about December 15 to March 15 and reaches thickness of 24 to 30 inches during colder winters. Ice can be damaging to the lakeside installations by thrust action of by the wind action on ice cakes.
\n
The stabilization of lake levels often requires the construction of outlet control structures. A detailed study of past lake-level elevations and other hydologic date is necessary to establish a level that can be maintained and to determine the means necessary for maintaining the established level. Detailed lake-level records for 28 lakes are included in the report, and records for over 100 other lakes data are available in the U.S. Geological Survey Office, Indianapolis, Ind. Evaporation data from the four Class A evaporation station of the U. S. Weather Bureau have been compiled in this report. A table showing the established legal lake level and related data is included.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Government Printing Office","publisherLocation":"Washington, S. Geological Survey of chemical quality of surface waters and sedimentation in the Wind River Basin, Wyo. The sedimentation study was begun in 1946 to determine the quantity of sediment that is transported by the streams in the basin; the probable sources of the sediment; the effect of large irrigation projects on sediment yield, particularly along Fivemile Creek; and the probable specific weight of the sediment when initially deposited in a reservoir. The study of the chemical quality of the water was begun in 1945 to obtain information on the sources, nature, and amounts of dissolved material that is transported by streams and on the suitability of the waters for different uses. Phases of geology and hydrology pertinent to the sedimentation and chemical quality were studied. Results of the investigation through September 30, 1952, and some special studies that were made during the 1953 and 1954 water years are reported. \r\n\r\nThe rocks in the Wind River Basin are granite, schist, and gneiss of Precambrian age and a thick series of sedimentary strata that range in age from Cambrian to Recent. Rocks of Precambrian and Paleozoic age are confined to the mountains, rocks of Mesozoic age crop out along the flank of the Wind River and Owl Creek Mountains and in denuded anticlines in the floor of the basin, and rocks of Tertiary age cover the greater part of the floor of the basin. Deposits of debris from glaciers are in the mountains, and remnants of gravel-capped terraces of Pleistocene age are on the floor of the basin. The lateral extent and depth of alluvial deposits of Recent age along all the streams are highly variable. \r\n\r\nThe climate of the floor of the basin is arid. The foothills probably receive a greater amount of intense rainfall than the areas at lower altitudes. Most precipitation in the Wind River Mountains falls as snow. The foothill sections, in general, are transitional zones between the cold, humid climate of the high mountains and the warmer, drier climate of the basin floor. \r\n\r\nAverage annual runoff in the basin is about 3.6 inches on the basis of adjusted streamflow records for the Bighorn River near Thermopolis. Runoff from the mountains is high and is mostly from melting of snow and from spring and early summer rains. It does not vary greatly from year to year because annual water losses are small in comparison to annual precipitation. In the areas on the floor of the basin, where runoff is low, the runoff is mostly the result of storms in late spring and early summer. The annual water losses nearly equal the annual precipitation; therefore, runoff is extremely variable, in terms of percentage changes, from year to year and from point to point during any 1 year.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. G.P.O.,","doi":"10.3133/wsp1373","usgsCitation":"Colby, B.R., Hembree, C., and Rainwater, F.H., 1956, Sedimentation and chemical quality of surface waters in the Wind River basin, Wyoming: U.S. Geological Survey Water Supply Paper 1373, x, 336 p. :ill., maps (12 folded in pocket) ;24 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/wsp1373.","productDescription":"x, 336 p. :ill., maps (12 folded in pocket) ;24 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":137362,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1373/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":25976,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1373/plate-01.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":25977,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1373/plate-02.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":25978,"rank":402,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1373/plate-03.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":25979,"rank":403,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1373/plate-04.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":25980,"rank":404,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1373/plate-05.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":25981,"rank":405,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1373/plate-06.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":25982,"rank":406,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1373/plate-07.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":25983,"rank":407,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1373/plate-08.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":25984,"rank":408,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1373/plate-09.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":25985,"rank":409,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1373/plate-10.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":25986,"rank":410,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1373/plate-11.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":25987,"rank":411,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1373/plate-12.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":25988,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1373/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4883e4b07f02db5181b2","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Colby, B.
