The specific activity of liver glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase in yearling rainbow trout remained unchanged when the fish were starved for periods as long as 8 weeks and when starved animals were fed diets of various compositions. Injection of insulin concurrently with refeeding also failed to alter the specific activity of the enzyme in trout. The absence of a dietary or insulin influence on the teleost enzyme system is to be contrasted with studies in mammals in which the activity of hepatic glucose 6-P dehydrogenase was markedly stimulated after refeeding starved animals or injection of insulin.Ingestion of the pesticide DDT by juvenile coho salmon or adult rainbow trout also had no effect on the specific activity of liver glucose 6-P dehydrogenase and DDT failed to inhibit the rainbow trout enzyme in vitro. These results also differ considerably from those found in higher animals.These results suggest that the glucose 6-P dehydrogenase enzyme in teleosts may be under a different type of regulatory control from that found in mammals.

The δC13 of co-existing shells of Modiolus sp. is normal (+ 1.7 to -2.7 per mil). The δO18 values of around + 3.5 per mil in all samples suggest deposition at temperatures around 0°C. Quaternary methane oxidized either chemically or microbiologically to carbon dioxide is the probable source of carbon in these carbonates.
Distribution factors of phosphorus (P in mineral/P in liquid) between phenocryst minerals and coexisting basaltic groundmass are: olivine (Fa20: 0.04 to 0.02; orthopyroxene (Fs20): 0.01; augite: 0.02 to 0.01; plagioclase: 0.02; ilmenite: 0.04. Because of the smallness of these distribution factors the ratio of phosphorus in the initial liquid to that in the residual liquid (phosphorus ratio) ideally equals the mass fraction of residual liquid minus 0.00 –0.04. The phosphorus ratio facilitates, therefore, quantitative comparison of the variation of major and minor elements with crystallization of basaltic liquids.
A phosphorus fractionation diagram is a log-log graph of the wt. % of any chemical element or oxide vs. the phosphorus ratio. The slopes of variation curves on such a fractionation diagram approximately equal unity minus the crystal aggregate/liquid distribution factor. Knowledge of the individual mineral/liquid distribution factors makes it possible to estimate the relative proportions of crystallizing minerals from the slopes of curves on a phosphorus fractionation diagram prior to the crystallization of apatite or other phosphorus-rich mineral. This was done fairly successfully for the Alae Lava Lake, Hawaii.

Substantial amounts of Ag, Al, Au, Bi, Ca, Co, Cr, Fe, Hg, K, La, Mg, Mn, Mo, Na, Ni, Pb, Te, Ti, V, Y, Zn, and the platinum metals do not interfere in the atomic-absorption determination.
Hydrophytes growing in natural ponds on the Coteau du Missouri in North Dakota have been studied. Previous studies in the same region showed how transpiration by hydrophytes could be separated from the total water loss from a natural pond, during the period that vegetation was growing in height, on the basis of a correlation between the height of vegetation and a mass‐transfer coefficient. It is shown that a similar separation can be made during the period of declining activity of the vegetation. A significant correlation was found between the ratio of moisture content of vegetation to its oven‐dry weight and the mass‐transfer coefficient. Weekly photographs on Ektachrome Infrared Aero film helped to confirm some of the phenomena observed.

Over 90 percent of the total mortality occurred during the first 2 weeks of life. Brood bonds began to dissolve after the fifth week. hlortality after 2 weeks was so low that Class I1 broods were believed to provide reliable estimates of production to flying age. Once-a-week brood censuses proved unreliable in estimating survival, but twice-a-xveek counts were accurate enough to estimate total broods and survival to Class II age.

It is believed to be the fourth recorded Paleozoic laterite in the world. The laterite is entirely within a thick carbonate of the Shogram Formation of Upper Devonian (Frasnian) age. A chemical analysis of the laterite shows the principal constitutents to be: Al2O3 35.5%, SiO2, 21.7% Fe2O3 16.0%, FeO 10.3%, TiO2, 3.5% CaO 0.97%, and MgO 0.70%. Minerals determined by X-ray analysis include hematite, boehmite, diaspore, anatase, rutile, kaolinite, pyrophyllite and what is probably chamosite.

S. Soil Conservation Service began construction of floodwater-retarding structures in Texas under authorities granted by the Congress. These authorities provide, where economically feasible, that the program be applied to tributary watersheds of 240,000 acres or less. The usual practice has been to control flood runoff from approximately 50 percent of the watershed by a system of floodwater-retarding structures located on headwater subwatersheds of generally less than 10 square miles.

multiple-source mass of fayalite-ferro-augite rhyolite, forming an extensive complex in northern Elko County, Nevada, with a diameter of about 8 miles and an exposed area of about 36 square miles. From the structure of the flow layering and the complex sequence of microbrecciation structures, it seems to be a relatively thick mass that rose passively through many fissures to flood a sag basin in the older rocks, which are as young as the early Pliocene Idavada Volcanics, a sequence of ignimbrites and tuffs. Chemical analyses, thin-sections, and X-ray diffractometer studies show that the Circle Creek Rhyolite is a two-feldspar rhyolite. The interrelations of the pyroxene phases are unusually complex. The Circle Creek is partly concealed by later tuffs, gravels, and olivine basalt and is cut by two sequences of high-angle faults of different ages.
