Patterns of Late Cenozoic Faulting
\nThe Walker Lake 1o x 2o quadrangle lies athwart the transitional boundary between the Sierra Nevade and Basin and Range physiographic provinces. Six distinct topographic domains are identified with the quadrangle (fig. 1). Theses domains are clearly defined by contrasting orientations, densities, and styles of lake Neogene faulting as follows:

The wilderness study area has a moderately high potential for geothermal resources, a low to moderate potential for base metal or precious metal resources in middle to upper Tertiary volcanic rocks, essentially no oil, gas, or coal potential, and a largely unassessable potential for metal deposits related to Laramide igneous intrusions in pre-Tertiary or lower Tertiary rocks that underlie the area. The contiguous roadless area, which borders the New Mexico half of the wilderness study area, mainly on the north side of the San Francisco River, has a low to moderate potential for molybdenum or copper deposits related to intrusive igneous rocks in the core of a volcano of dacitic composition at Goat Basin.

The study area comprises six tracts totaling about 2,943 acres in the Daniel Boone National Forest. It is in the Cumberland Plateau section of the Appalachian Plateaus Province. All surface and mineral rights are federally owned.
\nLimestone and shale units of Mississippian age and overlying sandstone, shale, and coal beds of Pennsylvanian age comprise the bedrock exposed in the Troublesome Roadless Area.
\nCoal, sandstone, and shale are the principal mineral resources in the study area. Coal has been mined near the roadless area from at least two coal beds. Available data indicate that coal reserves do not underlie the area. Coal resources totalling 7 4 7,000 short tons in the Stearns No. 1112 (?) coal bed and 166,000 short tons in the Barren Fork(?) coal bed are contained in the Troublesome Roadless Area.
\nPossible uses for sandstone units include silica sand, construction sand, and dimension stone. Shale may be suitable for structural clay products. Commercial quantities of oil and gas may be present at shallow depth in rocks of Mississippian age. A stream-sediment geochemical survey failed to recognize anomalies that would suggest mineralization, and the metallic mineral potential of the study area appears limited.

The results of this study are important for the planning of future mining operations and will aid in developing suitable reclamation procedures. In addition, these data will serve as a base line from which a long-term program for determining rates of erosion and deposition could be developed. Such measurements are essential to understanding the impact of surface mining on geomorphic processes affected by extraction of resources form arid lands. The area chosen for the study lies within for 7-1/2-minute quadrangles (The Hogback South, Kirtland SW, Newcomb NE, and The Pillar NW) in the northwest San Juan Basin (figs. 1,2). The area includes five drainage basins covering approximately 200 mi2 (520 km2) that flow west into the Chaco River (fig. 1). Approximately 41 mi2 (106 km2) of this area is scheduled for surface mining during the next several years as part of the southern extension of the Navajo Mine.
