A Devonian laterite has recently been discovered near Reshun in the Mastuj valley of Chitral State, West Pakistan. It is believed to be the fourth recorded Paleozoic laterite in the world. The laterite is entirely within a thick carbonate of the Shogram Formation of Upper Devonian (Frasnian) age. A chemical analysis of the laterite shows the principal constitutents to be: Al2O3 35.5%, SiO2, 21.7% Fe2O3 16.0%, FeO 10.3%, TiO2, 3.5% CaO 0.97%, and MgO 0.70%. Minerals determined by X-ray analysis include hematite, boehmite, diaspore, anatase, rutile, kaolinite, pyrophyllite and what is probably chamosite.

The usual practice has been to control flood runoff from approximately 50 percent of the watershed by a system of floodwater-retarding structures located on headwater subwatersheds of generally less than 10 square miles.

multiple-source mass of fayalite-ferro-augite rhyolite, forming an extensive complex in northern Elko County, Nevada, with a diameter of about 8 miles and an exposed area of about 36 square miles. From the structure of the flow layering and the complex sequence of microbrecciation structures, it seems to be a relatively thick mass that rose passively through many fissures to flood a sag basin in the older rocks, which are as young as the early Pliocene Idavada Volcanics, a sequence of ignimbrites and tuffs. Chemical analyses, thin-sections, and X-ray diffractometer studies show that the Circle Creek Rhyolite is a two-feldspar rhyolite. The interrelations of the pyroxene phases are unusually complex. The Circle Creek is partly concealed by later tuffs, gravels, and olivine basalt and is cut by two sequences of high-angle faults of different ages.

This report, like the others (see references, p. 105), contains information on well construction, ground-water withdrawals, water-level changes, and related changes in precipitation and streamflow. It also contains supplementary data that are related to ground-water use in some areas. In reports of this series, the inclusion of such supplementary data as graphs showing chemical quality of water and maps showing water-table configuration is intended only for those years or areas for which applicable data are available and are important to a discussion of changing ground-water conditions.
The report includes individual discussions of the most important areas of ground-water withdrawal in the State for the calendar year 1967. Water-level fluctuations, however, are described for the period spring 1967 to spring 1968. Included for the first time in this series of annual reports is a (1) summation of the withdrawal of water from wells in the 5 years 1963-67 (table 3) and (2) maps and discussions of water-level changes for the 5-year period 1963-68. Many of the data used in the report were collected by the Geological Survey in cooperation with the Division of Water Rights, Utah Department of Natural Resources.

The study conducted during the 1960 and 1961 water years was limited to defining surface-water inflow at sites close to the lakeshore, as well as at sites used in the 1960-6 study. From these comparative data, estimates of inflow at the lakeshore were made for the 1960 and 1961 water years. During the 1964 water year, when inflow to the lake was probably representative of the 31-year period, about 800,000 acre-feet of water containing 2,200,000 tons of dissolved solids entered the lake.
During the years of average streamflow, about 500,000 acre-feet of water which might be developed for culinary use, passes the lowest sampling sites on the Bear and Weber Rivers. Also, more than 90 percent of the flow near the mouths of the Bear, Weber, and Jordan Rivers would be suitable for irrigation.
Sources of inflow could be selected to provide a water supply for a fresh-water lake east of Antelope Island. The supply would range from 300,000 acre-feet of water containing 800 ppm (parts per million) of dissolved solids during periods of low streamflow to 1 million acre-feet containing 500 ppm during periods of average streamflow.

This report provides long-term data on streamflow at selected short-term gaging stations in Utah. The records of streamflow at the short-term or secondary gaging stations are extended on the basis of a graphical correlation with concurrent records at long-term or primary gaging stations. The data presented consist of records of runoff at the short-term stations summarized on a monthly and yearly basis; these data include the actual short-term records and the correlative estimates of runoff. Methods and information are included to enable the reader to make further extensions of runoff records.
The standard error of estimate for correlations used is 30 percent or less, and the coefficient of correlation is at least 0.8. Streamflow information is thereby obtained that is believed to be more representative of the long-term runoff than is an actual short-term record.
This study shows that the optimum period of concurrent record needed in Utah for a reliable correlation is about 15-20 years. Extensions of record for low-flow and flood-frequency studies usually cannot be obtained from correlations. Much of this information could be collected economically by converting short-term stream-gaging stations to partial-record stations after a satisfactory correlation with a long-term station has been obtained.

This report contains an analysis of reconnaissance data collected during the 1964 water year regarding the quality of water in these rivers and their tributaries. The purpose of the reconnaissance was to obtain needed water-quality information for the basin. Corollary purposes were to (1) determine the suitability of surface water for specific
uses, (2) determine the need and criteria for a water-quality network, and (3) locate sources of organic pollution to the rivers. Data concerning item 3 are mentioned only briefly in this report and will be discussed in a report to be prepared by the Utah Water Pollution and Control Board. Data collected in connection with the reconnaissance and resulting analyses were reported by Hahl and Cabell (1965).
Aflatoxins (toxic metabolites of the mold Aspergillus flavus) were present in a commercial trout ration causing hepatoma in rainbow trout. Cottonseed meal and solvent extracts of cottonseed meal and of rations containing cottonseed meal and peanut meal were found by chemical assay and confirmed by duckling assay to contain aflatoxins. Diets containing these materials and a purified test diet to which aflatoxins had been added produced microscopic tumors in 6 months and gross lesions of hepatocarcinoma in 9 months. Similar diets without aflatoxin were negative.

Liver glycogen depletion was accelerated by both endotoxins, but there was no significant cardiovascular response or effect on liver tryptophan pyrrolase activity. Since the cardiovascular effects of histamine were also limited, it was concluded that the metabolic effects of bacterial endotoxins in salmonids are qualitatively different from those of the higher vertebrates.

Since the presence of this microflora in fish depends on the recent intake of food (12), the rate of detoxication and hence the toxicity of ingested DDT to the rainbow trout will probably depend somewhat on the available food supply.
