The Mt. Montro kyanite deposit, 14 miles north of Buchanan, Grand Bassa County, Liberia, is near the middle of a belt of kyanite-bearing gneisses and schists that is 9 miles long and 1 mile wide. The deposit, which seems to be the most persistent and the largest single body of kyanite rocks in the belt, is approximately 12, 600 feet long, as much as 480 feet in outcrop width, and from 25 to 350 feet thick. Kyanite-quartz-biotite-feldspar-garnet-muscovite gneiss, local interbeds of kyanite-mica schist, and lesser amounts of biotite-quartz gneiss, are the principal rocks in the deposit. Other rocks in the kyanite belt include garnet-biotite gneiss, undifferentiated quartzo-feldspathic gneiss, quartzite, and amphibolite. The rocks are the product of regional metamorphism to almandine amphibolite facies. The regional strike is northwest and dips are southwest.

Kyanite crystals are as much as 3 inches long. The kyanite content ranges from 5. 8 to 46. 7 percent, but most rocks contain between 10 and 35 percent. Garnetiferous beds contain as much as 15 percent red garnets that range to half an inch in diameter. In general, the garnet-rich beds are found in the upper part of the deposit.

he total reserves of the Mt. Montro kyanite deposit are estimated at about 10 million tons of kyanitic rock containing approximately 2.5 million tons of kyanite. These estimates include measured, indicated, and inferred reserves, calculated to depths of 25 to 100 feet, on the assumption that open-cut mining to those depths would be feasible. The largest part of the deposit underlies Mt. Montro and contains about 8 million tons of kyanitic rock containing nearly 1.9 million tons of kyanite. Residual soil overlying the deposit averages about 5 feet in thickness and is estimated to comprise slightly more than 400,000 cubic yards of material containing about 186,000 tons of kyanite.

The proximity of the kyanite deposit to a paved highway, to port facilities at Buchanan, and to water, electrical power, and timber resources are considered favorable factors relevant to possible development.

A series of 39 overlapping photographs of the southwestern United States and adjacent areas of Mexico was obtained as part of an experiment of the Gemini IV mission. Twenty-four of these pictures plus one from the Gemini III and four from the Gemini V mission were used to construct a 1:1,000,000-scale, black and white, semi-controlled mosaic. This mosaic covers about 150,000 square miles and extends along the 32d parallel of north latitude from the Pacific Ocean to the 100th meridian in west-central Texas, and averages about 150 miles in width. Many of the individual rectified photographs can be enlarged to a scale of 1:250,000 with little or no loss of resolution; such enlargements will be of great value to earth resources studies. If the angle of tilt is more than 35 degrees, some detail in the background of the photograph is lost. The U. S. Geological Survey is currently conducting several small research projects in which this 1:1,000,000-scale mosaic and the individual photographs are the prime research tools.

The Wanamu-Blue Mountains area is situated in the Northwest District of Guyana, about 110 miles northwest of Georgetown. The Blue Mountains are low, but rugged, hills that have developed on mafic metamorphic rocks that occur in an arcuate \"mantle\" around a granite batholith, the Aranka-Wanamu Granite. The area lies within the Precambrian Guiana Shield and is entirely covered with tropical rain forest. The geology of the area is complex and is made up of an assemblage of metamorphic rocks consisting of phyllites, quartzites, amphibolites, and epidiorites that are intruded by serpentinites. The serpentinites occur as thin, tabular, dike-like bodies that trend northwest across the area. The serpentinites contain abundant magnetite, but very little chromite or sulfide minerals. Lletasomatic reaction zones have developed around the serpentinite bodies at their contacts with country rock. These reaction zones consist of aureoles of actinolite schist, chloritic hornfels, and talcose zones in the phyllites.

PURPOSE AND SCOPE

\n

The purposes of this report are to (1) describe the geohydrology of the basin, (2) describe and relate the surface- and ground-water systems, (3) discuss existing and possible future water problems in the basin, and (4) to suggest means of possible solutions. The scope of the study was to interpret and relate streamflow, climatic, geologic, and ground-water information. Because of its reconnaissance nature, this report should serve as background information. More specific water information for many areas of the Fox-Wolf River basin is available at the offices of the U.S. Geological Survey and the University of Wisconsin Geological and Natural History Survey in Madison. This study is part of a planned investigation of the geology and water resources of the rapidly developing Fox River valley industrial complex and municipal region extending from Green Bay to Fond du Lac. The related studies in this region cover Fond du Lac County (Newport, 1962), Outagamie County (LeRoux, 1957), Brown County (Drescher, 1953), the Green Bay area (Knowles and others, 1964; Knowles, 1964), Waupaca County (Berkstresser, 1964), Waushara County (Summers, 1965), and Winnebago County (Olcott, 1966).

The Mustinka and Bois de Sioux Rivers watershed is mantled by till deposits with scattered sand deposits.

\n

The west-central and northwestern part of the watershed was covered by Glacial Lake Agassiz and the resulting land surface is a flat, lake-washed till plain. Patches and ridges of sand scattered throughout the lake plain were formed as beach ridges and offshore bars. Small, isolated areas of lake clay also occur within this area. The remainder of the watershed is glacial moraine characterized by rolling topography in all but the extreme eastern edge which has more local relief and more permanent lakes. Alluvial sand deposits are found in the eastern part of the morainal area.

\n

The drainage area of the watershed in Minnesota is 1,429 square miles. The area includes mors of Traverse County and parts of Big Stone, Stevens, Grant, Ottertail, and Wilkin Counties.

\n

Population within the watershed unit is about 20,000. The largest community, Wheaton, has a population of 2,102. The agricultural economy of the area is concentrated on grain farming, although some dairying is carried on. The principal grain crops are corn and oats. Flax, soybeans, and barley are also very commonly grown.

\n

The natural vegetation in the area was largely prairie. A hardwood deciduous forest grew only on the extreme eastern edge. Today, the area is almost entirely farm land containing numerous local woodlots.

\n

Outdoor recreation is concentrated on waterfowl and pheasant hunting. Fishing is done in Lake Traverse and in the larger lakes in the eastern part of the morainal area.
