Mineral investigations between Khamis Mushayt and Bi'r Idimah in the Asir quadrangle, sheet 1-217 (Brown and Jackson, 1959) began September 24, 1964 and ended November 20. Total distance travelled was 6264 kilometers. Sixteen camps were set, and 483 samples of various geologic materials, principally wadi sands, laterite, and gossan, were taken. Not all the area originally scheduled to be covered was examined, owing principally to more time being spent on scheelite and laterite than originally planned. No work was done in the area covered by the two 1:50,000 mosaics numbered 9E and 8E. They will be blocked out in January 1965.
The area completed includes parts or all of the 1:50,000 scale mosaics numbered 8B, 8C, 8D, 8F, 9B, 9C, 9D, and 9F. No megascopic indication of an exploitable mineral deposit of any type, except the small occurrences of marble cited in the October 1964 report and slate already in use, was discovered. A previously unknown ancient working was found, but it is small. Unless spectro-chemical analysis of samples discloses anomalously great amounts of some element, the area examined must be considered as unfavorable for ore deposits, except possibly the gossan exposed south of Bi'r Idimah.

Several total intensity aeromagnetic profiles, primarily over the Yukon Flats in the central part of the area shown on figure 1, were obtained by the U.S. Geological Survey in 1954 and 1958 and were released for public inspection in 1960 (Andreasen, 1960a, 1960b). Most of these profiles were flown north and south at a barometric elevation of about 2,500 feet; some were flown north and south at 4,000 to 8,000 feet. All of these north-trending profiles are incorporated in this report. Six northwest-trending profiles parallel to the Yukon River between long. 147° W and 144° W. are not included.

At least 25 different minerals and industrial rocks occur in the area, but of these materials only asbestos seems to have a real possibility for industrial development. Twenty occurrences of asbestos were found around the Higera gold mine and between Hamdah and Bi'r El Marwahs A favorable area for asbestos exists north and east of Tathlith, but none was discovered there. It is recommended that the Hamdah-Bi'r El Marwah area be examined in detail, and the Higera and Tathlith areas receive reconnaissance studies for asbestos. Asbestos is a high-value commodity which can be processed by air separation, thereby freeing its benefitiation from dependence on water. Examination of the asbestos deposits would have as a by-product an appraisal of the resources of soapstone, anthophyllite, talc, vermiculite, chromite, calcite, gold, and copper in the three asbestos districts.
Thirty-six occurrences of marble were found in the area. Several have favorable characteristics for industrial or architectural use.
One ancient mine, the Ishaaib (19°15'N.x 43°40'E.), may contain copper.

The flood release from these reservoirs is to be restricted so that flows will not exceed 6,000 cfs (cubic feet per second) in t he Merced River at the gaging station near Stevinson (about 5 miles upstream from the mouth). Computed floodwater profiles based on channel conditions in late 1967 and observed water-surface profiles for historic floods were used in the analysis. The conclusions reached are contingent on there being no levee failures during periods of high flow.
\nEvaluation of historical flood records at gaging stations between Merced Falls and Stevinson indicates that a reduction in peak discharge occurs as the floods traverse the study reach. Reduction in peak discharge is dependent on river stage, prior river flows, magnitude of tributary inflow, bank storage and infiltration to the ground-water reservoir, and diversion for irrigation. For example, in late June 1967 a peak discharge of 9,860 cfs at Merced Falls was reduced by irrigation diversions to 6,850 cfs at a site 3 miles downstream and further reduced to 6,490 cfs at the gaging station near Stevinson.
\nBackwater effect from high stages on t he San Joaquin River will increase stages on the Merced River and the effect may extend as far as 8 miles up stream from the junction of the two rivers. Backwater may cause some overbank flooding along the 8-mile reach when Merced River flows at Stevinson exceed 4,000 cfs . Most of the area subject to such inundation lies between levees that are a considerable distance--up to half a mile-- from the main channel . In the reach upstream from the backwater effect, a discharge of 4, 500 cfs near Stevinson will cause flooding at two locations, one of which is about 10 miles upstream an the other about 18.5 miles upstream from the confluence . When the discharge is 6,000 cfs , additional sites will be inundated, particularly the 20.5-mile reach of channel downstream from the Highway 99 crossing.
\nA discharge of 6,000 cfs will pass through all bridge openings in the reach but overbank flooding may occur if debris should lodge against the bridge piers and significantly reduce the waterway area .
\nPeak flows in Dry Creek, as measured 18.7 miles upstream from the mouth of Dry Creek, will be attenuated due to channel storage and will increase the discharge of the Merced River at Cressey by only about 50 per cent of t he Dry Creek peak discharge. Furthermore, Dry Creek seldom carries floodflows during periods of high water on the Merced River.

\nThe purposes of this report are to (1) describe the geohydrology of the basin, (2) describe and relate the surface- and ground-water systems, (3) discuss existing and possible future water problems in the basin, and (4) to suggest means of possible solutions. The scope of the study was to interpret and relate streamflow, climatic, geologic, and ground-water information. Because of its reconnaissance nature, this report should serve as background information. More specific water information for many areas of the Fox-Wolf River basin is available at the offices of the U.S. Geological Survey and the University of Wisconsin Geological and Natural History Survey in Madison. This study is part of a planned investigation of the geology and water resources of the rapidly developing Fox River valley industrial complex and municipal region extending from Green Bay to Fond du Lac. The related studies in this region cover Fond du Lac County (Newport, 1962), Outagamie County (LeRoux, 1957), Brown County (Drescher, 1953), the Green Bay area (Knowles and others, 1964; Knowles, 1964), Waupaca County (Berkstresser, 1964), Waushara County (Summers, 1965), and Winnebago County (Olcott, 1966).

The Mustinka and Bois de Sioux Rivers watershed is mantled by till deposits with scattered sand deposits.
\nThe west-central and northwestern part of the watershed was covered by Glacial Lake Agassiz and the resulting land surface is a flat, lake-washed till plain. Patches and ridges of sand scattered throughout the lake plain were formed as beach ridges and offshore bars. Small, isolated areas of lake clay also occur within this area. The remainder of the watershed is glacial moraine characterized by rolling topography in all but the extreme eastern edge which has more local relief and more permanent lakes. Alluvial sand deposits are found in the eastern part of the morainal area.
\nThe drainage area of the watershed in Minnesota is 1,429 square miles. The area includes mors of Traverse County and parts of Big Stone, Stevens, Grant, Ottertail, and Wilkin Counties.
\nPopulation within the watershed unit is about 20,000. The largest community, Wheaton, has a population of 2,102. The agricultural economy of the area is concentrated on grain farming, although some dairying is carried on. The principal grain crops are corn and oats. Flax, soybeans, and barley are also very commonly grown.
\nThe natural vegetation in the area was largely prairie. A hardwood deciduous forest grew only on the extreme eastern edge. Today, the area is almost entirely farm land containing numerous local woodlots.
\nOutdoor recreation is concentrated on waterfowl and pheasant hunting. Fishing is done in Lake Traverse and in the larger lakes in the eastern part of the morainal area.

It has been established that such clays exist in at least three areas; reserves are sufficient in each area for 20 years or more of operation of a light-weight aggregate plant, if the plant were designed to produce 1,000 cubic yards of expanded material per day for 330 operating days per year. Reserves in any of the three areas can be expanded further or new deposits can be found by additional exploratory work.

The Wagon Bed Formation of middle and late Eocene age and the Beaver Divide Conglomerate Member of the White River Formation-this member being of early Oligocene (Chadronian) age--are exposed near the top of the Beaver Divide in Fremont County, Wyo., about 23 miles southeast of Riverton. The upper part of the Wagon Bed Formation, dated as late Eocene (Uintan) age by Van Houten on the basis of vertebrate fossils, contains a highly silicified fresh-water limestone stratigraphically high in the section with a poorly preserved diatom assemblage. The Beaver Divide Conglomerate Member contains large blocks of similar white limestone, some of which have an assemblage of diatoms the same as that of the Wagon Bed Formation but showing excellent preservation. Both the Wagon Bed limestone and the limestone blocks from the Beaver Divide Conglomerate Member have virtually the same assemblages of nonmarine gastropods. A study of the local geology indicates that a marked erosional topography formed on the Wagon Bed strata before deposition of the Beaver Divide sediments. The Beaver Divide limestone blocks were derived from nearby exposures of the Wagon Bed Formation. The diatom assemblage under consideration was originally deposited in the Wagon Bed limestone and is, therefore, late Eocene rather than early Oligocene in age. This represents the earliest known assemblage of nonmarine diatoms from North America.
The diatom assemblage of the Wagon Bed Formation consists of 27 new species, two species known previously from the upper Miocene of France, and five species still found in living assemblages. One new genus containing two species also occurs in the deposit. The Wagon Bed diatom assemblage is strikingly distinct from later Tertiary fresh-water assemblages in that many diatom genera common to the younger deposits are totally lacking in this Eocene formation. These genera may be absent because of a highly specialized paleoecology during deposition of the Wagon Bed limestone, but the meager evidence provided by the few still-living species suggests nothing more specific than deposition in a temperate circumneutral lake.

They include greisens that contain high\nconcentrations of beryllium and subordinate amounts of tin, tungsten, and other metals associated with the Redskin Granite. Scheelite deposits in calc-silicate\nrocks and greisen deposits near Tappan Mountain that contain tin and tungsten minerals are associated with the Silver Plume (?) Granite. Samples of stream sediments and soils locally show anomalous concentrations of beryllium, tin, copper, lead, and molybdenum.
