The following report covers field work and muffle furnace tests on clays in the immediate vicinity of Dacca, East Pakistan, to determine clay amenability to bloating for the commercial production of light-weight aggregates. It has been established that such clays exist in at least three areas; reserves are sufficient in each area for 20 years or more of operation of a light-weight aggregate plant, if the plant were designed to produce 1,000 cubic yards of expanded material per day for 330 operating days per year. Reserves in any of the three areas can be expanded further or new deposits can be found by additional exploratory work.

Lesser aquifers providing water for industrial, commercial, domestic, and some municipal supplies are also outlined.
\nThis report is based on geologic mapping, records of about 2,200 wells and test borings, seismic records, and discussion of water problems with municipal and corporate officials, drillers, and consulting engineers. Selected test borings and wells, including most municipal and industrial wells, are located on the map. They indicate areas from which water is pumped, saturated thickness and texture of materials, yield of wells, and areas in which exploratory work has already been done. Additional subsurface data are listed in a separate report (Williams and Willey, 1967).

\nFrom its source in Lake Itasca, 1,460 feet above mean sea level, the Mississippi River follows a semicircular 376 mile course to where it leaves the watershed at an altitude of 1,150 feet. The origin of the river is in glacial moraine. The river flows through end moraines and rolling till plains, across an extensive outwash plain occupied by large reservoir lakes, and finally across an extensive marshy plain which is the bed of an ancient glacial lake.
\nGlacial deposits in the watershed include till, lenses of sand and gravel in till, outwash deposits of sand and gravel, and lake deposits of fine sand, silt, and clay. Beneath the glacial drift is an uneven surface of Precambrian bedrock. Bedrock consists of igneous intrusives and metamorphosed sedimentary formations.
\nWater resources in the area are abundant. Lakes and streams occupy about 8 percent of the surface of the area. Ground-water supplies are available from glacial drift and from bedrock.

The Wagon Bed Formation of middle and late Eocene age and the Beaver Divide Conglomerate Member of the White River Formation-this member being of early Oligocene (Chadronian) age--are exposed near the top of the Beaver Divide in Fremont County, Wyo., about 23 miles southeast of Riverton. The upper part of the Wagon Bed Formation, dated as late Eocene (Uintan) age by Van Houten on the basis of vertebrate fossils, contains a highly silicified fresh-water limestone stratigraphically high in the section with a poorly preserved diatom assemblage. The Beaver Divide Conglomerate Member contains large blocks of similar white limestone, some of which have an assemblage of diatoms the same as that of the Wagon Bed Formation but showing excellent preservation. Both the Wagon Bed limestone and the limestone blocks from the Beaver Divide Conglomerate Member have virtually the same assemblages of nonmarine gastropods. A study of the local geology indicates that a marked erosional topography formed on the Wagon Bed strata before deposition of the Beaver Divide sediments. The Beaver Divide limestone blocks were derived from nearby exposures of the Wagon Bed Formation. The diatom assemblage under consideration was originally deposited in the Wagon Bed limestone and is, therefore, late Eocene rather than early Oligocene in age. This represents the earliest known assemblage of nonmarine diatoms from North America.
The diatom assemblage of the Wagon Bed Formation consists of 27 new species, two species known previously from the upper Miocene of France, and five species still found in living assemblages. One new genus containing two species also occurs in the deposit. The Wagon Bed diatom assemblage is strikingly distinct from later Tertiary fresh-water assemblages in that many diatom genera common to the younger deposits are totally lacking in this Eocene formation. These genera may be absent because of a highly specialized paleoecology during deposition of the Wagon Bed limestone, but the meager evidence provided by the few still-living species suggests nothing more specific than deposition in a temperate circumneutral lake.

From this mapping it is inferred that the pyrite deposits occur along a sub-vertical, north-trending fault in andesite and other rocks at the crest line of an anticline in a roof pendant. The pendant is in a composite pluton formed by a per-alkalic magma series. Diorite and biotite granite are the most common and older members of the series. Pyroxene granite and quartz porphyry are less common younger rocks in the series. Extrusive equivalents of these plutonic rocks form dikes in the area. The pyrite is interpreted to have been deposited from hydrothermal solutions after diorite and biotite granite were consolidated and while pyroxene granite was being emplaced. Structures controlling the deposition of the pyrite are regional. Exploration at 1:2,500 scale by geologic, geochemical, and electro-magnetic methods are recommended. Diamond drilling should accompany the other exploration.
Chemical analyses of 22 specimens of Precambrian marble from the Asir quadrangle shows that seven deposits have a composition within the range of compositions of natural cement rocks used for Roman cement and quick-setting cement. None of the samples is rich enough in CaO for use as a raw material for Portland cement, and most samples of the marble have too much MgO for Portland cement.
Analyses of the major elements in 71 samples of lateritic material from the As Sarat mountains show that none of the laterite can be used as an ore for iron owing to too little iron and too much alumina, silica, and sulfur. One sample has the alumina-silica ratio of gibbsite or boehmite. One sample has alumina and sulfur in percentages suggesting the presence of alunite, and several other samples probably contain alunite. Because alunite is potash rich and might be used as a raw material for potash fertilizer, it is recommended that an airborne radiometric survey be made of tine As Sarat mountains to locate potassium-rich parts of the laterite.
