The Mississippi Headwaters watershed is a 7,608 square mile area in north-central Minnesota which includes all land drained by the Mississippi River above the Crow Wing River.

\n

From its source in Lake Itasca, 1,460 feet above mean sea level, the Mississippi River follows a semicircular 376 mile course to where it leaves the watershed at an altitude of 1,150 feet. The origin of the river is in glacial moraine. The river flows through end moraines and rolling till plains, across an extensive outwash plain occupied by large reservoir lakes, and finally across an extensive marshy plain which is the bed of an ancient glacial lake.

Glacial deposits in the watershed include till, lenses of sand and gravel in till, outwash deposits of sand and gravel, and lake deposits of fine sand, silt, and clay. Beneath the glacial drift is an uneven surface of Precambrian bedrock. Bedrock consists of igneous intrusives and metamorphosed sedimentary formations.

Water resources in the area are abundant. Lakes and streams occupy about 8 percent of the surface of the area. Ground-water supplies are available from glacial drift and from bedrock.

Sand was the dominant type of land-derived sediment deposited in the Sunnyside district during the regressive phases. Sand bodies prograded seaward in response to changing sediment supply from a source west of Sunnyside. Where conditions were favorable for the accumulation of vegetable material, peat deposits formed and were later changed to bituminous Coal by diagenesis. Studies of the coal bed show that the coals were formed from accumulation of small, low-growing plants and plant debris that was transported into the area of accumulation. Remains of large plants in the coals are rare. \r\n\r\nTrace fossils, which are tracks, trails and burrows formed by organisms and preserved in the rock, are extremely abundant in the Blackhawk rocks. These biogenic sedimentary structures are common in Cretaceous deposits throughout the western United States. Trace fossil distribution in the rocks is controlled by the depositional environment preferred by their creators. A study of the trace fossils of a. locality allows a more precise determination of the conditions during deposition of the sediments. Water depth, bottom conditions, salinity, current velocity and amount of suspended nutrients in the water are some of the environmental factors that may be reconstructed by studying trace fossils. \r\n\r\nThe Blackhawk Formation at Sunnyside comprises the members, the Kenilworth Member and the Sunnyside Member. Field studies show that the formation may be further subdivided in the Sunnyside district., according to the precepts of units of mappable thickness and similar lithologic characteristics. The Blackhawk pinches out eastward and north. ward into the Mancos Shale, and names for submembers become meaningless. Names are of value in the region of interest, however, because of the prominence of the named units. \r\n\r\nCoal mining is the main industry of the Book Cliffs region. Mines of the Sunnyside district are plagued by coal mine bumps, which are sudden, catastrophic releases of stress in the coal. Bumps cause loss of life, property age, and loss of profit to mining companies. Bumps occur when shear stress built up in the coal exceeds the shear Strength of the coal. Differential overburden pressure, faulting and tectonic activity, and lithology and structure of roof rocks are factors which influence bumps. The northern part of the Tenmile and Taunton River basins occupies an area of about 195 square miles. It includes some of the rapidly growing suburbs of Boston, Attleboro, and Brockton and lies along major highways connecting Boston with Fall River and Providence, Rhode Island. (See location map.)

The purpose of this report is to delineate the extent of and to estimate the annual sustained yield and pumpage of the principal aquifers that are suitable for exploration for high-yielding wells to meet the needs of municipal water systems and industry. Lesser aquifers providing water for industrial, commercial, domestic, and some municipal supplies are also outlined.

\n

This report is based on geologic mapping, records of about 2,200 wells and test borings, seismic records, and discussion of water problems with municipal and corporate officials, drillers, and consulting engineers. Selected test borings and wells, including most municipal and industrial  wells, are located on the map. They indicate areas from which water is pumped, saturated thickness and texture of materials, yield of wells, and areas in which exploratory work has already been done. Additional subsurface data are listed in a separate report (Williams and Willey, 1967).

A series of 39 overlapping photographs of the southwestern United States and adjacent areas of Mexico was obtained as part of an experiment of the Gemini IV mission. Twenty-four of these pictures plus one from the Gemini III and four from the Gemini V mission were used to construct a 1:1,000,000-scale, black and white, semi-controlled mosaic. This mosaic covers about 150,000 square miles and extends along the 32d parallel of north latitude from the Pacific Ocean to the 100th meridian in west-central Texas, and averages about 150 miles in width. Many of the individual rectified photographs can be enlarged to a scale of 1:250,000 with little or no loss of resolution; such enlargements will be of great value to earth resources studies. If the angle of tilt is more than 35 degrees, some detail in the background of the photograph is lost. The U. S. Geological Survey is currently conducting several small research projects in which this 1:1,000,000-scale mosaic and the individual photographs are the prime research tools.

Alaska","docAbstract":"The Golden Zone mine area, in the upper Chulitna district, is underlain mainly by siltstone and tuff, volcanic conglomerate and breccia, and limestone. These rocks were invaded, probably in the Tertiary, by dikes and a small stock of porphyry. The ore deposits of the area are the Golden Zone breccia pipe, a nearly vertical body about in the center of the porphyry stock, and steeply dipping veins. Most veins strike north to northeast and are commonly only 1-5 feet thick, but locally are as much as 15 feet thick. Both pipe and vein deposits are gold deposits of low to moderate grade that are characterized by abundant arsenopyrite; some contain possibly economic amounts of copper, lead and zinc minerals.
