The flood release from these reservoirs is to be restricted so that flows will not exceed 6,000 cfs (cubic feet per second) in t he Merced River at the gaging station near Stevinson (about 5 miles upstream from the mouth). Computed floodwater profiles based on channel conditions in late 1967 and observed water-surface profiles for historic floods were used in the analysis. The conclusions reached are contingent on there being no levee failures during periods of high flow.</p>\n<p>Evaluation of historical flood records at gaging stations between Merced Falls and Stevinson indicates that a reduction in peak discharge occurs as the floods traverse the study reach. Reduction in peak discharge is dependent on river stage, prior river flows, magnitude of tributary inflow, bank storage and infiltration to the ground-water reservoir, and diversion for irrigation. For example, in late June 1967 a peak discharge of 9,860 cfs at Merced Falls was reduced by irrigation diversions to 6,850 cfs at a site 3 miles downstream and further reduced to 6,490 cfs at the gaging station near Stevinson.</p>\n<p>Backwater effect from high stages on t he San Joaquin River will increase stages on the Merced River and the effect may extend as far as 8 miles up stream from the junction of the two rivers. Backwater may cause some overbank flooding along the 8-mile reach when Merced River flows at Stevinson exceed 4,000 cfs . Most of the area subject to such inundation lies between levees that are a considerable distance--up to half a mile-- from the main channel . In the reach upstream from the backwater effect, a discharge of 4, 500 cfs near Stevinson will cause flooding at two locations, one of which is about 10 miles upstream an the other about 18.5 miles upstream from the confluence . When the discharge is 6,000 cfs , additional sites will be inundated, particularly the 20.5-mile reach of channel downstream from the Highway 99 crossing.</p>\n<p>A discharge of 6,000 cfs will pass through all bridge openings in the reach but overbank flooding may occur if debris should lodge against the bridge piers and significantly reduce the waterway area .</p>\n<p>Peak flows in Dry Creek, as measured 18.7 miles upstream from the mouth of Dry Creek, will be attenuated due to channel storage and will increase the discharge of the Merced River at Cressey by only about 50 per cent of t he Dry Creek peak discharge. C. Knight in 1901. In the Medicine Bow Mountains, these metals are commonly associated with copper, silver, or gold in shear zones that cut a series of mafic igneous and metamorphic rocks. At the New Rambler mine, where the initial discovery was made, about 50,000 tons of mine and mill waste contain an average of 0.3 percent copper, 7 ppm (parts per million) silver, 1 ppm platinum plus palladium, and 0.7 ppm gold. This material is believed to be from a low-grade envelope around the high-grade pod of complex ore that was mined selectively in the old workings. \r\n\r\nSoil samples in the vicinity of the New Rambler mine exhibit a wide range of content of several elements associated with the ore. Most of the variation can be attributed to contamination, from the mine workings. Even though soil samples identify a low-level copper anomaly that persists to the limit of the area sampled, soils do not offer a promising medium for tracing mineralization owing to the blanket of transported overburden. \r\n\r\nStream sediments, if preconcentrated for analysis, do reveal anomalies not only in the contaminated stream below the New Rambler mine, but in adjacent drainage and on Dave Creek. Examination of a spectrum of elements in heavy-mineral concentrates from stream sediment may contribute to knowledge of the nature of the mineralization and of the basic geology of the environment. \r\n\r\nThe sampling of bedrock exposures is not particularly fruitful because outcrops are sparse and the exposed rocks are the least altered and mineralized. Bedrock sampling does, however, provide information on the large size and provincial nature of the platinum-rich area. Fresh ground water containing generally less than 500 ppm (parts per million) of total dissolved solids is found in wide belts paralleling the major rivers and in other areas of ground-water recharge. The fresh groundwater zone of upper (northeastern) Rechna Doab, where annual precipitation in places exceeds 30 inches, is the most extensive of the Punjab region and attains a depth of 1,700 feet or more below land surface near Gujranwala. Fresh ground water adjacent to the Indus River extends locally to depths of about \r\nl,500 feet. \r\n\r\nSaline ground water occurs downgradient from sources of recharge, particularly in the central parts of the interfluvial areas. Also, available data indicate a gradual increase in mineralization with depth and distance from sources of fresh-water recharge. Thus, even extensive fresh-water zones appear to be underlain, at variable depths, by saline ground water in most of the Punjab region. The saline ground waters of the Punjab region do not constitute, however, a distinct salt-water body that can be defined in terms of stratigraphic position, sea-level datum, particular lithology, or by chemical character. \r\n\r\nThe ground waters of the Punjab region are characterized by a gradation from calcium magnesium bicarbonate types, near the sources of recharge, to waters containing a dominant proportion of sodium. Water containing from 500 to 1,000 ppm is commonly of the sodium bicarbonate type, or it may be of the mixed type, having about equal proportions of the common anions (bicarbonate, chloride, and sulfate). With increasing mineralization from about 1,000 to 3,000 ppm, ,the relative proportion of chloride and sulfate increases, and these waters are generally of the sodium chloride or sodium sulfate type. The highly mineralized waters of the Punjab region are generally of the sodium chloride type, whereas in Dera Ismail (D.I.) Khan District sodium sulfate waters predominate. The ground waters from more than 900 sampling sites have been classified into eight types, according to dominant cations and anions. As part of this study, 57 samples of pan concentrates were taken from streams draining three types of areas: (1)'barren' areas, where gold mineralization might be geologically possible but no deposits are known, (2) slightly mineralized areas that contain only a few known veins and prospects and small mines, and (3) well-mineralized areas that contain numerous veins and some very productive mines. The concentrate samples were analyzed by the fire-assay-atomic-absorption method. Replicate analyses of large samples gave results consistent enough to permit placing considerable confidence in the results obtained for smaller samples on which only one analysis was made. For general field practice, it is necessary to pan only enough sand and gravel to yield about 15 grams of concentrate. The analytical r6sults are also quantitatively compatible with known geologic relations and indicate that a few samples from a stream are adequate to distinguish between 'barren' and mineralized areas and to determine the relative amount of gold in mineralized areas.
