The abundance and distribution varied considerably within the bay; at the time of the survey, most snails were found near the north-central shore. Environmental characteristics were nearly uniform and had no apparent effect on the distribution; concentrations in different areas at different times appeared to result from water movements induced by winds. The time of the study coincided with a period of reproduction; young-of-the-year snails were most abundant in areas where adults were most common. The frequency distributions of shell height and diameter suggested the presence of two age groups of adults in the population. Considerable natural mortality was seen, both at the time of the study and in other seasons. Only three other gastropods were observed in the bay; the most abundant was another viviparid, Campeloma decisum. Other mollusks present were four species of Sphaeriidae and 18 species of Unionidae. A summary of invertebrates found, other than the mollusks, is also presented.","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"Ohio Journal of Science","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","collaboration":"Out-of-print","usgsCitation":"Wolfert, D.R., and Hiltunen, J.K., 1968, Distribution and abundance of the Japanese snail, Viviparus japonicus, and associated macrobenthos in Sandusky Bay, Ohio: Ohio Journal of Science, v. 68, no. 1, p. 32-40.","productDescription":"p. 32-40","startPage":"32","endPage":"40","numberOfPages":"8","costCenters":[{"id":324,"text":"Great Lakes Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":132837,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"68","issue":"1","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a81e4b07f02db649fb3","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Wolfert, David R.","contributorId":49305,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Wolfert","given":"David","email":"","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":308585,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Hiltunen, Jarl K.","contributorId":27820,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Hiltunen","given":"Jarl","email":"","middleInitial":"K.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":308584,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Scales were taken monthly from marked fish for periods up to 21 months. Scales were also examined from fish that died and from preserved specimens of young-of-the-year for each species. Two marks formed on almost all scales each calendar year. The stronger formed during March-April and the weaker in October-November. Both marks had all the usual characteristics of an annulus but the spring mark was considered the annulus and the fall mark an accessory check. The annulus formed during a period of constant temperatures and of little change in growth or increasing growth. The accessory check formed during a period of declining temperatures (1-5 degrees F, or 0.6-2.8 degrees C, per month) and of little change in growth or declining growth. Most fish grew throughout the winter; the only exceptions were one bloater (<i>Coregonus hoyi</i>) and several of the largest lake whitefish (<i>C. clupeaformis</i>). Fish were always given all the food they would eat to eliminate availability of food as a factor of mark formation. The temperature of the water during the winter (50 ±. 0.3 F; 10.0 ±. 0.2 C) did not arrest metabolic activity. The growth rate was related more closely to day length than to other variables examined.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"NRC Research Press","publisherLocation":"Ottawa, Ontario","doi":"10.1139/f68-188","usgsCitation":"Hogman, W.J., 1968, Annulus formation on scales of four species of coregonids reared under artificial conditions: Journal of the Fisheries Research Board of Canada, v. 25, no. 10, p. 2111-2122, https://doi.org/10.1139/f68-188.","productDescription":"12 p.","startPage":"2111","endPage":"2122","numberOfPages":"12","costCenters":[{"id":324,"text":"Great Lakes Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":131738,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"25","issue":"10","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b19e4b07f02db6a7ec1","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Hogman, Walter J.","contributorId":34092,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Hogman","given":"Walter","email":"","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":308207,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The two previous reports--one by J. E. Upson in 1951 and another by R. E. Evenson, H. D. Wilson, Jr., and K. S. Muir--were on ground-water conditions in the Goleta and Carpinteria basins. The Santa Barbara-Montecito area is between those two basins-the Goleta basin on the west and the Carpinteria basin on the east. This area of about 30 square miles extends from the Pacific Ocean on the south to the Santa Inez Mountains on the north. The city of Santa Barbara and the towns of Montecito and Summerland are within the area. \r\n\r\nThe Santa Barbara-Montecito area is a low-lying flat section of the coastal plain. Farther inland are highlands of consolidated rock and terrace deposits. The highlands are areas of uplift, folding, and faulting, and the lowlands are structural depressions. Most of the urban development in the area has been in the lowlands. The unconsolidated deposits that have partly filled the structural depressions make up the ground-water reservoir of the Santa Barbara-Montecito area. They include the Santa Barbara Formation of Pliocene and Pleistocene age, the Casitas Formation of Pleistocene age, and the alluvium of late Pleistocene and Recent age. These deposits underlie an area of about 20 square miles \r\nand have a maximum thickness of about 2,000 feet. The consolidated rocks of Tertiary age that underlie and form the boundaries of the ground-water reservoir contain ground water in fractures and in sandstone beds. However, the consolidated rocks are not an important source of ground water. \r\n\r\nIn 1959, a year the ground-water basins were full and ground water in storage was at a maximum, storage in the Santa Barbara area was 184,000 acre-feet, and storage in the Montecito area was 97,000 acre-feet. By 1964, in response to below-average recharge and continued withdrawal by pumping, the quantity of ground water in storage in the Santa Barbara area had decreased to 178,000 acre-feet. Because of a reduction in pumpage, there was little change in storage in the Montecito area between 1959 and 1964. \r\n\r\nDeep percolation of rain, seepage from streams, and subsurface inflow from consolidated rocks are the main sources of recharge to the ground-water reservoir in the Santa Barbara-Montecito area. The most important discharge is by pumping.The long-term perennial yield of the ground-water reservoir of the Santa Barbara area is estimated to be 1,700-2,000 acre-feet. Present data are insufficient to accurately determine the perennial yield of the reservoir in the Montecito area, but it is estimated to be about 2,500 acre-feet. \r\n\r\nMost ground water in the Santa Barbara-Montecito area is suitable for general use. However, ground water in some of the consolidated rocks and in the shallow unconsolidated deposits adjacent to the coast is too saline for most uses. Seawater intrusion has occurred in the Santa Barbara area and the western part of the Montecito area. The intrusion, however, is limited to the upper part of the nearshore shallow alluvial deposits and contaminates only wells which were constructed without a near-surface seal.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wsp1859A","usgsCitation":"Muir, K.S., 1968, Ground-water reconnaissance of the Santa Barbara-Montecito area, Santa Barbara County, California: U.S. Geological Survey Water Supply Paper 1859, iv, 28 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/wsp1859A.","productDescription":"iv, 28 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":137740,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1859a/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":28265,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1859a/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":414045,"rank":3,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_25079.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"country":"United States","state":"California","county":"Santa Barbara County","otherGeospatial":"Santa Barbara-Montecito area","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -119.565,\n              34.483\n            ],\n            [\n              -119.77,\n              34.483\n            ],\n            [\n              -119.77,\n              34.397\n            ],\n            [\n              -119.565,\n              34.397\n            ],\n            [\n              -119.565,\n              34.483\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a81e4b07f02db649dde","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Muir, K. Most of the material shows curved, roughly rhombic cleavage. The color is due to dispersed minute grains of one or more oxides of manganese, so dispersed that they rarely show any relation to cleavage surfaces or outward crystal forms.Recent study shows that the black calcite from numerous metalliferous deposits in the Western States contains small amounts of several metals, especially zinc, lead, and silver; in places, the crude black calcite contains as much as one percent silver and the black residue remaining after solution of the calcite as much as 1,500 ounces of silver to the ton. Black calcite is recognized in some deposits of Late Cretaceous to early Tertiary age where the host is Paleozoic carbonate rocks; thus far, this variety contains the larger amounts of silver. It is also present in some vein deposits where the host is generally volcanic rocks of middle Tertiary age; these are known in many districts in the southwest and even though the lead and zinc content is noteworthy, the silver content rarely exceeds one ounce to the ton (8).By studying polished sections of black calcite from the Aurora mine, White Pine County, Nevada, three silver-bearing manganate minerals have been recognized; (1) an argentian chalcophanite containing 7.5 percent silver (Ag&nbsp;</span><sub>2</sub><span>&nbsp;O), to which, in a following paper, the name aurorite is given; (2) argentian todorokite containing 3.9 percent silver (Ag&nbsp;</span><sub>2</sub><span>&nbsp;O), and (3) hydrous silver-bearing lead manganese oxide, containing 1.18 percent silver E. Peterson and W. H. Robison, Toxicol. Appl. Pharmacol. 6:321, 1964). Recently, certain organisms (A. S. Perry, S. Miller, and A. J. Buckner. J. Agr. Food Chem. 11:457, 1963; J. D. Pinto, M. N. Comien, and M. S. Dunn. J. Biol. Significantly, dichlorobenzhydrol (DBH), dichlorophenylmethane (DPM), and dichlorodiphenylethylene (DDE) have been tentatively identified in rats fed DDA (Pinto et al., J. Biol. Chem. 240:2148, 1965). Since DDA as well as DDT is degraded by the ubiquitous microorganism Aerobacter aerogenes (G. Wedemeyer, Appl. Microbiol. 15:569, 1967; J. L. Mendel, and M. S. Walton, Science 151:1527, 1966), it seemed reasonable that the intestinal microflora might be involved in DBP formation, DPM and DBH being intermediates in its pathway from DDA. Since DDA is a (3,y-unsaturated acid, ketone formation via an alkene and an alcohol would be expected (S. G. Waley, Mechanisms of Organic and Enzymatic Reactions, Oxford University Press, London, England 1962).</p>","language":"English","publisher":"American Society for Microbiology","doi":"10.1128/am.15.6.1494-1495.1967","usgsCitation":"Wedemeyer, G., 1967, Biodegradation of dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane: Intermediates in dichlorodiphenylacetic acid metabolism by Aerobacter aerogenes: Applied Microbiology, v. 15, no. 6, p. 1494-1495, https://doi.org/10.1128/am.15.6.1494-1495.1967.","productDescription":"2 p.","startPage":"1494","endPage":"1495","costCenters":[{"id":654,"text":"Western Fisheries Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":480336,"rank":2,"type":{"id":40,"text":"Open Access Publisher Index Page"},"url":"https://doi.org/10.1128/am.15.6.1494-1495.1967","text":"Publisher Index Page"},{"id":313960,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"15","issue":"6","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"568e48e8e4b0e7a44bc418b1","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Wedemeyer, Gary gwedemeyer@usgs.gov","contributorId":5504,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Wedemeyer","given":"Gary","email":"gwedemeyer@usgs.gov","affiliations":[],"preferred":true,"id":882893,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}
