This report has been prepared at the request of the Kansas Water Resources Board under provisions of a cooperative agreement with the U.S. Geological Survey dated July 1, 1966, for water-resources investigations.
The Kansas Water Resources Board has been advised of a recent serious degradation of the low-water channel of the lower Kansas River below Bonner Springs and has requested information on the following: (1) magnitude of change in regimen of the stream, (2) causes for the change including sand removal, change in sediment load, or change in the regimen of the Missouri River downstream, and (3) future change.
The requested information, presented herein, is based on the streamflow, stage, and sediment data collected by the U.S. Geological Survey; stage, sediment, and profile data collected by the U.S. Corps of Engineers; and sand removal data provided by the State of Kansas. -Photographs of the reach are shown in plates 1 and 2, and locations of the various features are shown in figure 1.

Geophysical log data indicate the presence of 25 gallons per ton shale for a thickness of 500 feet my be marginal. The richest section of oil shale is indicated to be centered around a depth of 2,260 feet. Within the oil shale the interval 1,182 to 1,737 feet is indicated to be relatively structurally incompetent and probably permeable. Extension of available regional hydrologic data indicate the oil shale section is probably water bearing and may yield as much as 1,000 gallons per minute. The \r\ndrill, site is located in the Piceance Creek basin, Rio Blanco County, \r\nColorado. From ground surface the drill hole penetrated 1,120 feet \r\nof the Evacuation Creek Member and 1,094 feet of oil shale in the \r\nParachute Creek Member of the Green River Formation. Oil shale \r\nyielding more than 20 gallons per ton occurs between 1,260-2,214 feet \r\nin depth. A gas explosion near the bottom of the hole resulted in \r\nabandonment of the exploratory hole which was still in oil shale. \r\nThe top of the nahcolite zone is at 1,693 feet. Below this depth \r\nthe core contains common to abundant amounts of sodium bicarbonate \r\nsalt intermixed with oil shale. The core is divided into seven \r\nstructural zones that reflect changes in joint intensity, core loss \r\nand broken core due to natural causes. The zone of poor core \r\nrecovery is in the Interval between 1,300-1,450 feet. \r\n\r\nResults of preliminary geophysical log analyses indicate that \r\noil yields determined by Fischer assay compare favorably with yields \r\ndetermined by geophysical log analyses. There is strong evidence \r\nthat analyses of complete core data from Colorado core holes No. 1 \r\nand No. 2 reveal a reliable relationship between geophysical log \r\nresponse and oil yield. \r\n\r\nThe quality of the logs is poor in the rich shale section and \r\nthe possibility of repeating the logging program should be considered. \r\n\r\nObservations during drilling, coring, and hydrologic testing \r\nof USBM/AEC Colorado core hole No. 2 reveal that the Parachute Creek \r\nMember of the Green River Formation is the principal aquifer water in the Parachute Creek Member is under artesian pressure. \r\n\r\nThe upper part of the aquifer has a higher hydrostatic head than, \r\nand is hydrologically separated from the lower part of the aquifer. \r\nThe transmissibility of the aquifer is about 3500 gpd per foot. The \r\nmaximum water yield of the core hole during testing was about 500 gpm. \r\nChemical analyses of water samples indicate that the content of \r\ndissolved solids is low, the principal ions being sodium and bicarbonate. Although the hole was originally cored, to a depth of \r\n2,214 feet, ,the present depth is about 2,100 feet. \r\n\r\nThis report presents a preliminary evaluation of core examination, \r\ngeophysical log interpretation and hydrological tests from the \r\nUSBM/AEC Colorado core hole No. 2. The cooperation of the U.S. Bureau \r\nof Mines is gratefully acknowledged. New fault scarps, fissures, cracks, and flexures appeared in bedrock and unconsolidated surficial deposits along or near the fault traces. Average strike of the faults is between N. 37° E. and N. 47° E.; they dip northwest at angles ranging from 50° to 85°. The dominant motion was dip slip; the blocks northwest of the reactivated faults were relatively upthrown, and both blocks were upthrown relative to sea level. No other earthquake faults have been found on land.\n\nThe Patton Bay fault on land is a complex system of en echelon strands marked by a series of spectacular landslides along the scarp and (or) by a zone of fissures and flexures on the upthrown block that locally is as much as 3,000 feet wide. The fault can be traced on land for 22 miles, and it has been mapped on the sea floor to the southwest of Montague Island an additional 17 miles. The maximum measured vertical component of slip is 20 to 23 feet and the maximum indicated dip slip is about 26 feet. A left-lateral strike-slip component of less than 2 feet occurs near the southern end of the fault on land where its strike changes from northeast to north. Indirect evidence from the seismic sea waves and aftershocks associated with the earthquake, and from the distribution of submarine scarps, suggests that the faulting on and near Montague Island occurred at the northeastern end of a reactivated submarine fault system that may extend discontinuously for more than 300 miles from Montague Island to the area offshore of the southeast coast of Kodiak Island.\n\nThe Hanning Bay fault is a minor rupture only 4 miles long that is marked by an exceptionally well defined almost continuous scarp. The maximum measured vertical component of slip is 16⅓ feet near the midpoint, and the indicated dip slip is about 20 feet. There is a maximum left-lateral strike-slip component of one-half foot near the southern end of the scarp. Warping and extension cracking occurred in bedrock near the midpoint on the upthrown block within about 1,000 feet of the fault scarp.\n\nThe reverse faults on Montague Island and their postulated submarine extensions lie within a tectonically important narrow zone of crustal attenuation and maximum uplift associated with the earthquake. However, there are no significant lithologic differences in the rock sequences across these faults to suggest that they form major tectonic boundaries. Their spatial distribution relative to the regional uplift associated with the earthquake, the earthquake focal region, and the epicenter of the main shock suggest that they are probably subsidiary features rather than the causative faults along which the earthquake originated.\n\nApproximately 70 percent of the new breakage along the Patton Bay and the Hanning Bay faults on Montague Island was along obvious preexisting active fault traces. This difficulty results from a 'particle sparsity effect', whereby the analysis for gold in a given sample depends more upon the occurrence of random flakes of gold in the analyzed portion than upon the actual gold content of the sample. \r\n\r\nThe particle sparsity effect can largely be eliminated by preparing a gold concentrate prior to analysis. A combination of sieve, gravimetric, and magnetic separation produces a satisfactory concentrate that yields accurate and reproducible analyses. In concentrates of nearly every marine and beach sand studied, the gold occurs in the nonmagnetic fraction smaller than 0.124 mm and with a specific gravity greater than 3.3. The grain size of gold in stream sediments is somewhat more variable. \r\n\r\nAnalysis of concentrates provides a means of greatly increasing the sensitivity of the analytical technique in relation to the initial sample. Gold rarely exceeds 1 part per million in even the richest black sand analyzed; to establish the distribution of gold (and \r\nplatinum) in marine sediments and its relationship to source and environmental factors, one commonly needs to know their content to the part per billion range. Rocks formerly thought to be premineralization in age, but unmineralized, are now known to be postmineral extrusives, resting unconformably on the altered andesite in which the ore bodies are found. Extensions of the known productive veins may be expected at shallow depth beneath the younger volcanic rocks, and are separated from the mined part of the veins by postmineral high-angle faults that have brought the younger volcanic rocks into fault contact with the mineralized andesite.
