The northwestern and western parts of the area are part of the Snake River lava plain. The central part of the area is occupied by alluvial plains of the Snake, Teton, and Falls Rivers, and Henrys Fork. The southeastern part of the area is a bench (Rexburg Bench), chiefly on silicic and basaltic volcanic rocks, which rises gradually to mountain peaks southeast of the area. The basalt, and the sand and gravel under the alluvial plains are good aquifers and yield large amounts of water with small drawdowns. The silicic volcanic rocks and the interbedded ash, pyroclastics, and sedimentary deposits generally yield much less water than the basalt and alluvium. The regional water table slopes southward beneath the basalt and alluvial plains. Seepage from stream channels and irrigated tracts has resulted in an extensive body of ground water perched above the regional water table. The perched water in part moves vertically down to the regional water table and in part laterally to the streams. Ground water beneath the Rexburg Bench moves generally northwestward to join the regional ground-water body beneath the alluvial plain. The regional water table is below the level of the streams in the area and ground water in the main aquifer, therefore is not tributary to the streams. Recharge to the regional water table is estimated to average 725,000 acre-feet annually. Pumping from the regional ground-water reservoir for irrigation or other uses would have no effect on streamflow or surface-water rights within the study area. However, depletion of the underflow would eventually reduce the inflow to American Falls Reservoir unless the depletion was offset by additional recharge. Total withdrawals of ground water for irrigation in 1962 were estimated to be 25,000 acre-feet and caused no significant decline in the water table. In the Ashton area surface-water irrigation has cause water to be perched in basalt above the silicic volcanic rocks and much of this perched water contributed to streamflow. The flow of Henrys Fork would be decreased by the amount of pumped ground water consumed by crops. It also provided for a high explosive (HE) comparison shot in a nearby drill hole. The purpose of the experiment was to gather information on the seismic decoupling of a nuclear explosion in a cavity by comparing seismic signals from a nuclear shot in the Salmon cavity with seismic signals recorded from Salmon and with seismic signals recorded from a muall (about 2 tons) HE shot in the salt dome. Surface seismic measurements were made by the U.S. Geological Survey, the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey, and the Air Force Technical Applications Center with coordination and overall direction by the Lawrence Radiation Laboratory. This report covers only the seismic measurements made by the U. S. Geological Survey. The first objective of this report is to describe the field recording procedures and the data obtained by the U. S. Geological Survey from these events. Fifty-six of the prospects are in the Loei-Chiengkarn area of northeast Thailand where regional geological, aeromagnetic, and geochemical studies were also performed; the other two prospects are on the Khorat Plateau.</p><p>The base-metal prospects are in volcanic or carbonate rocks. Four prospects have been tested by diamond drilling; disseminated copper deposits were found at two prospects and local lead-zinc mineralization at the other two.The two copper deposits have estimated proven and probable reserves of 16million tons containing about 1 percent copper, and possible reserves of 62 million tons.</p><p>The iron prospects are mostly metasomatic, at contacts of granodiorite with sedimentary and volcanic rocks. Four of the iron prospects were tested by diamond drilling; proven, probable, and possible reserves of about 27million tons containing 52 percent iron were developed predominantly in two deposits.</p><p>Twelve manganese and two gold prospects were investigated, but all are small or low grade.</p><p>Nonmetallic deposits of barite, gypsum, and limestone (cement grade) were examined in the Loei-Chiengkarn area, and salt was studied at Chaiyaphum. The real-time geologic mapping planned for the first mission could best be done if the exact position of the landing site were determined. The astronauts may have to find their position, with or without assistance from the Earth-based scientific mission center, before leaving the Lunar Module (LM), and the less time this takes, the more time will be available for exploring the lunar surface.</p><p>These considerations suggested the following questions: Could astronauts accurately locate themselves and how much time would it take?</p><p>The U.S. Geological Survey began studying this problem in July 1967. A crater field replica of a portion of the lunar surface was constructed and an LM mockup placed on it. Test subjects were asked to locate their exact position on a Lunar Orbiter photograph by comparing the photograph with the crater patterns visible through the LM windows.
