Low unconsolidated rock terraces and ridges of reefflat islands, mostly lying between tide levels, were composed of rubble conglomerates; carbon-14 dating of 11 samples from the conglomerates so far may suggest a former slightly higher sea level (nine samples range between 1890 and 3450 and one approaches 4500 years ago). However, recent hurricanes have produced ridges of comparable height and material, and in the same areas relics from World War II have been found cemented in place. Thus these datings do not in themselves necessarily indicate formerly higher sea levels. Growth was greatest in the 1st year (4.0 inches) and least in the 2nd and 3rd years (2.3 inches). Between the 4th and 9th years the increments increased from 2.6 to 3.5 inches. Growth was calculated from a curvilinear body‐scale relation. Intraseasonal growth in length extended from late April until well after October; most growth was in late summer and fall. The younger fish started growth earlier, and some mature fish did not increase in length until after the October spawning. Lake trout reached the minimum legal weight (1.5 pounds) in the 7th year of life and the average size taken in the commercial fishery (about 3 pounds) in the 8th year. The annual increase in weight in the 8th year of life was over 64%. Chemical analyses showed that there are three principal chemical types of water, calcium bicarbonate, sodium sulfate, and sodium chloride, as well as many mixtures of the three. Data were studied by factor analysis to learn the relative importance of each principal ion in determining the variations among the samples, and to examine the possibility of chemical equilibrium between aqueous and solid phases in the aquifers. Most of the covariance in the system may be accounted for by variances of Ca</span><sup>+2</sup><span>, Mg</span><sup>+2</sup><span>, Na</span><sup>+1</sup><span>, SO</span><sub>4</sub><sup>−2</sup><span>, and Cl</span><sup>−1</sup><span>. There is almost identical loading on the constituents Na</span><sup>+1</sup><span>&nbsp;and Cl</span><sup>−1</sup><span>. The variance in chemical composition of the hydrochemical system is governed largely by sources of sodium chloride. None of the components is controlled by equilibrium between ions in the water and minerals in the aquifers. Concentrations of NO</span><sub>3</sub><sup>−1</sup><span>&nbsp;and F</span><sup>−1</sup><span>&nbsp;vary independently of other constituents. Geographic distribution of statistical loadings of the principal constituents at individual wells does not reveal sources of the constituents, which must be deduced from geologic and hydrologic evidence. Factor analysis, however, furnished the critical information on chemical relationships basic to the deduction.</span></p>","language":"English","publisher":"American Geophysical Union","doi":"10.1029/WR003i002p00505","issn":"00431397","usgsCitation":"Dawdy, D., and Feth, J.H., 1967, Applications of factor analysis in study of chemistry of groundwater quality, Mojave River Valley, California: Water Resources Research, v. 3, no. 2, p. 505-510, https://doi.org/10.1029/WR003i002p00505.","productDescription":"6 p. These conditions are illustrated&nbsp;</span>at<span>&nbsp;</span>Lancaster<span>,&nbsp;</span>Ohio<span>, where low streambed permeability in the vicinity of the municipal well field, resulting from the discharge of&nbsp;</span>wastes<span>&nbsp;to the&nbsp;</span>Hocking<span>&nbsp;</span>River<span>, seriously retards the&nbsp;</span>infiltration<span>&nbsp;of surface&nbsp;</span>water<span>&nbsp;and lessens the available yield of the wells. The&nbsp;</span>wastes<span>&nbsp;consist of brine and iron‐laden effluent from the municipal treatment plant, discharged within the area of influence of the pumped wells to a stream already carrying much organic&nbsp;</span>waste<span>&nbsp;and other debris. Upstream from the discharge sewer, muck and organic debris have accumulated thickly on the streambed, while downstream from the sewer the streambed sediments have become tightly cemented by iron and other constituents in the&nbsp;</span>waste<span>&nbsp;</span>water<span>. There is evidence that, despite reduced streambed permeability,&nbsp;</span>wastes<span>&nbsp;have entered the aquifer and have materially contributed to declines in well efficiency and to recurring problems of well maintenance. Conditions such as those illustrated&nbsp;</span>at<span>&nbsp;</span>Lancaster<span>&nbsp;occur also&nbsp;</span>at<span>&nbsp;Dayton and are not uncommon elsewhere in&nbsp;</span>Ohio<span>. Indirect contamination of aquifers and adverse physical and chemical alteration of streambed sediments, resulting from surface‐</span>water<span>&nbsp;</span>waste<span>&nbsp;disposal, may in many places pose a threat to the&nbsp;</span>ground<span>‐</span>water<span>&nbsp;supply. This fact should not be overlooked in determining&nbsp;</span>water<span>‐</span>quality<span>&nbsp;standards to be established under the&nbsp;</span>Water<span>&nbsp;</span>Quality<span>&nbsp;Act of 1965.&nbsp;</span></p>","language":"English","publisher":"Wiley","doi":"10.1111/j.1745-6584.1967.tb03662.x","usgsCitation":"Norris, S., 1967, Effects on ground‐water quality and induced infiltration of wastes disposed into the Hocking River at Lancaster, Ohio: Groundwater, v. 5, no. 3, p. 15-19, https://doi.org/10.1111/j.1745-6584.1967.tb03662.x.","productDescription":"5 p.","startPage":"15","endPage":"19","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":386358,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United  States","state":"Ohio","city":"Lancaster","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -82.85888671875,\n              39.605688178320804\n            ],\n            [\n              -82.24365234375,\n              39.605688178320804\n            ],\n            [\n              -82.24365234375,\n              39.85072092501597\n            ],\n            [\n              -82.85888671875,\n              39.85072092501597\n            ],\n            [\n              -82.85888671875,\n              39.605688178320804\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"5","issue":"3","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2006-07-06","publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Norris, S.E.","contributorId":43771,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Norris","given":"S.E.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":817288,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The stations were distributed from Solomons near the mouth of the&nbsp;</span>estuary<span>, upstream to Lower Marlboro, near the limit of salt water intrusion. Species composition and abundance, seasons of attachment, and production of the epifaunal community were determined on material collected from panels submerged for 1, 3, and 12 month periods covering the years&nbsp;</span>1963<span>&nbsp;and&nbsp;</span>1964<span>. Salinity was highest downstream, as was the number of species. Salinity decreased rapidly between the&nbsp;</span>Patuxent<span>&nbsp;</span>River<span>&nbsp;Bridge station and Lower Marlboro, where the number of species was reduced to half. Seasons of attachment corresponded with seasonal temperature changes, with the greatest attachment taking place during the summer months. Over 40 species were identified with 7 of them comprising the bulk of the biomass produced. For the 7 most productive species, seasons of attachment and total numbers collected from areas of one square decimeter from monthly and quarterly panels from each station are shown. The seven species were the barnacle Balanus improvisus; the tunicate, Molgula manhattensis; the hydroids, Cordylophora lacustris and Bimeria franciscana; the amphipod, Corophium lacustre; the anemone Sagartia leucolena; the tubeworm, Polydora ligni. Their respective importance varied with seasons of attachment and location. Comments on the distribution and abundance of the less significant forms are included. Dry and ash-free dry weight (organic carbon) production of the epifaunal community varied from month to month depending on the seasons of attachment of the various species. The highest production for a single month was observed at the upriver station, Lower Marlboro, where barnacles and amphipods produced 2,754 g/m</span>2<span>/30 days dry weight and 351 g</span>c<span>/m</span>2<span>/30 days organic weight during August&nbsp;</span>1963<span>. Some workers have considered it to be a pseudomorph after diamond, and have used the proposed diamond ancestry as evidence of a meteoritic parent body of at least lunar dimensions. We have synthesized cliftonite in Fe-Ni-C alloys in vacuum, as a product of decomposition of cohenite [(Fe,Ni)</span>3<span>C]. We therefore suggest that a high pressure origin is unnecessary for meteorites which contain cliftonite, and that these meteorites were formed at low pressures.
