The first preliminary list of deep borings in the United States was issued as Water-Supply Papers Nos. 57 and 61. The present publication includes all of the wells listed in these two papers, together with many additional borings, mostly of recent date. Messrs. M. L. Fuller and A. C. Veatch, of the eastern section of hydrology, and other geologists of the Survey have contributed many new data. Descriptions of borings published in reports issued since 1901 have been incorporated as far as practicable. All the entries are by counties. The wells and borings reported in the paper are all more than 400 feet in depth. The information concerning them has been obtained partly from replies to circular letters sent to all parts of the United States and partly from geological reports and other published sources. Owing to the difficulty of obtaining replies to the circulars, to lack of knowledge on the part of correspondents, and to the incompleteness of published records, doubtless there are borings which have not been reported. In regions of oil and gas wells, where borings are numerous, the individual wells can not be listed here, but representative wells are given. References to logs or records of the wells or extended descriptions of them are given in footnotes, and after the list of wells in each State there is added a list of the principal publications relating to deep borings in that State.
The bearing of the information given in the columns of the lists probably is apparent unless, perhaps, in the one headed \"Height to which the water rises.\" In this column an entry such as \"-45\" indicates that the water rises to within 45 feet of the surface; \"+45\" indicates that it is a flowing well and has sufficient head to raise the water 45 feet above the surface in an open pipe 45 feet or more in height. The yield in gallons per minute usually is estimated. Depths and diameters often have been reported from memory and different sources of publication sometimes give different figures. Most wells which are not stated to be \"for oil,\" \"for gas,\" \"brine,\" \"abandoned,\" etc., in the remarks column, or \"not any\" in the yield column, generally afford more or less water. Many of the gas and oil wells, active or abandoned, yield salt water.

During the 1902-3 session of the Maine legislature an effort was made by petitioners resident in Washington County to obtain from the State an appropriation of $10,000 for coal exploration. The resolve proposed contained a ,proviso necessitating an additional contribution of $5,000 by individuals or corporations interested. The $15,000 thus procured was to be expended in drilling for coal at the most promising localities. The resolve failed to pass, but the Maine Survey Commission decided that the same results could be accomplished by the expenditure of a small portion of the general appropriation for geologic work in cooperation with the United States Geological Survey.

This district had long been selected by the writer as worthy of special economic investigation, as well on account of the importance of its products as because of its geological structure and the peculiar relations of its ore deposits. It was not, however, until the summer mentioned above that the means at the disposal of the Survey, both pecuniary and scientific, justified its undertaking. As originally planned, the areal or surface geology was to have been worked out by Mr. Keith, who had already spent many years in unraveling the complicated geological structure of the Appalachian province, while Mr. Boutwell, who had more recently become attached to the Survey, was to have charge of the underground geology, or a study of the ore deposits, under the immediate supervision of the writer. When the time came for actually taking the field, it was found that the pressure of other work would not permit Mr. Keith to carry out fully the part allotted to him, and in consequence a part of his field work has fallen to Mr. Boutwell. Field work was commenced by the writer and Mr. Boutwell early in July, 1900. Mr. Keith joined the party on August 10, but was obliged to leave for other duties early in September. Mr. Boutwell carried on his field work continuously from July until December, taking up underground work after the snowfall had rendered work on the surface geology impracticable. The geological structure had proved to be unexpectedly intricate and complicated, so that, on the opening of the field season of 1901, it was found necessary to make further study in the light of results already worked out, and Mr. Boutwell spent some weeks in the district in the early summer of 1901. His field work that year, partly in California and partly in Arizona, as assistant to Mr. Waldemar Lindgren, lasted through the summer and winter and well into the spring of 1902, so that but little time , was left before he was obliged to take the field again in his study of the Park City district of Utah. Mr. Keith had been too closely occupied with his Appalachian work to complete his part,' and thus the publication of this report has been unusually delayed. While the delay is a cause for regret, this regret is much tempered by the consideration that had the report been published earlier many facts brought to light during the vigorous development of the region in late years, which have an important bearing upon the structure and genesis of the ore deposits, could not have been used in its preparation.

Though only a few wells have been drilled and it is too soon to predict an important future for the region as a petroleum producer, studies have shown that there is ample justification for further prospecting and that the region may yet be an important source of illuminating oil. In this connection it is of interest to note that the Bering River coal is the best that has yet been found on the Pacific coast of North America.
These coal and petroleum fields have been deemed of sufficient importance to justify the further investigation already begun, and it is hoped that this, together with the commercial development, will soon permit of more definite statements regarding the economic importance of this field.

The general deductions are intended to give the general reader a comprehensive review of the principal conditions which exist in this area, while the base data have been given for the use of the engineer, so that he may make his own deductions and have sufficient data for estimates in hydraulic investigations.

The report is accompanied by a reconnaissance map by Mr. D. C. Witherspoon, topographer, under whose directions the field operations were carried out.
Surveys were begun in Seward Peninsula in 1899, soon after the discovery of the rich placers of Nome, and, in view of the great economic importance of the field, have been extended as rapidly as the appropriations permitted. It was early recognized that here, as elsewhere in Alaska, it would be better to obtain general topographic and geologic results, to be immediately available to the mining public, than to attempt exhaustive surveys and studies of small areas. This has been the guiding policy in formulating and executing the plans. As a result, there have been issued a number of publications (including reconnaissance maps) which, though only of a preliminary character, have been, because of their timeliness, of much value to the mining public.
With the appearance of the following report this first epoch in the surveys will have closed, for there will be available complete reconnaissance reports and maps of the entire Seward Peninsula. These general reports and maps should be followed by more detailed surveys; these have been begun, and it is purposed to carry them forward as rapidly as circumstances will permit. In taking up areas for detailed investigations the attempt will be made to study first those of greatest economic interest.
